In regard to the major in MJD-KOREB Korean Studies, members noted that although the academic rationale suggested that the major had a corresponding honours specialisation in Korean Studies, this was not actually the case. Students undertaking honours in this language would do so via the honours specialisation in Asian Studies. On a related matter, the Faculty was reminded that the quality of the academic rationale was important.

In regard to MJD-PPEDM Philosophy, Politics, and Economics members agreed that the complementary units needed to be removed.

In regard to the major MJD-POLSC Political Science and International Relations, members queried the removal of political theory from the major and agreed that the academic rational for the removal of the said units be revisited. Additionally, it was suggested that a benchmarking exercise, within Australia, be undertaken for consideration of the inclusion of the political theory unit. In regard to the Category A status for the new unit proposals (POLS3204 and POLS3231) this would be reconsidered once the learning outcomes had been revised. Once received, the change proposal and associated new unit proposals would be reconsidered by the Committee either at a future meeting or via Circular.

RESOLVED – 96/20

to approve the proposed changes to majors and associated new unit proposals listed in 9.1.1 to 9.1.3 above, as set out in the agenda attachments, subject to revisions being made as outlined above to the satisfaction of the Chair, effective from 2021.

In response to feedback from the previous meeting of the Committee, the Faculty confirmed that the current title of the major MJD-GGRPY Geographical Sciences would remain unchanged. Additionally, it was noted that this major would remain in the Bachelor of Science and in turn it was questioned as to whether the major should have a mathematics bridging unit listed. Members had before them a visual representation of the majors in this discipline, which provided clarification of the distinctiveness of the major. On a related matter, members noted that the central Curriculum Management team would remind faculties of the importance of the timely submission of items for consideration by the Committee.

In regard to the honours specialisation HON-GGRPY Geographical Science members were advised that the new unit MIXD5005 Designing Social Research, which was to be utilised across a number of courses, was part of the dissertation component. In turn clarification was sought on the purpose of the unit both within and without of the established honours courses and the associated learning outcomes. Furthermore, the assessment item of ‘continuing assessment’ in the unit GEOG5013 Master's Research Project in Geography, Environment and Planning Part 3 would need to be revised.

RESOLVED – 97/20

to approve: the proposed changes to MJD-GGRPY Geographical Sciences, HON-GGRPY Geographical Science and

Members noted that the above proposals had been developed in line with Schedule 7 of the UWA Policy on Courses: Undergraduate. Additionally, members were reminded that, minors were a way to satisfy the broadening requirement. Furthermore, similar to second majors there were no specific admission requirements for minors. These would be managed via subject prerequisites for the relevant unit. For those minors that were to be targeted to a particular cohort of students, it would be beneficial for the relevant discipline to be consulted early on in the development. Members were advised that the Chair would initiate further discussions on the concepts of minors at a future meeting of the Education Committee.

In regard to MNR-CHIAS Advanced Studies on Contemporary China and the new unit proposal CHIN1003, members noted that this would provide students with an understanding of contemporary China. The unit would however, only be opened to native speakers and in turn this might limit the number of enrolments. The minor was not seen to be broadening and it was agreed that this be withdrawn.

In regard to MNR-DGART Digital Arts, although the concept had general endorsement, members were concerned with the coherence of the minor and agreed that this be revisited and resubmitted for further consideration by the Committee either at a future meeting or via Circular.

In regard to MNR-EDUCN Education for the Professions, members agreed that this was broadening. However, for clarity it was suggested that the title be amended as the current title. Members suggested a possible title of ‘Professional Learning’ and agreed that this be revisited and resubmitted for further consideration by the Committee either at a future meeting or via Circular.

RESOLVED – 98/20

to: recommend to the Academic Council that MNR-MEHUM Environmental Humanities, as set out in the
