Presentation Guidelines and Expectations1
As we begin our study of The Book Thief, different groups of students will be responsible for coming up with presentations based on the assigned reading. These presentations will take place throughout the month of April through May 16 and will begin on Friday, April 22. The calendar of reading and presentation dates is on the previous page.
Within these presentations, students will be responsible for first leading a class discussion about the reading and summarizing their section. Similar to what we did while reading Shadow on the Mountain, the purpose of these discussions will be to ensure readers’ understanding of the chapter and to pose critical thinking questions about the reading. After this discussion, students will be responsible for creating an activity for their classmates based on the reading. This can be accomplished in a variety of ways: mini-group projects, visual thinking activities (Tug-of-War, Chalk Talk, etc.), skits, etc.
To help ensure that these presentations are well-planned and organized, groups will need to submit an outline of their presentation (including a rough sketch of how much time will be spent on the discussion and the activity) as well as a copy of their discussion questions.

On-Going Quote Activity
We have been discussing the figurative language used in The Book Thief and the unique way Marcus Zusak combines his words to allow the reader to experience reading on a deeper and more meaningful level. As you read, copy sentences that you significant or particularly memorable. Use the following pages to keep these quotes together. You should be recording at least one (1) or two (2) quotes a day. Keep in mind that roughly half of these quotes should have an emphasis on figurative language.

Themes in The Book Thief
● Words, Reading, and Propaganda - Throughout the novel, Liesel grows to understand the power of words, the importance of reading, and the power words can have in changing the minds of others (both for the better and for the worse). How is propaganda, in both visual and audio mediums, present in Liesel's everyday life? How has it created a fearful world?
● Bravery and Cowardice - In Hitler's Germany, is it cowardice NOT to stand up to the Nazis and their beliefs? Is this cowardice acceptable? Who was brave in this society?
● Thievery - As indicated by the title, The Book Thief is a book, in part, about thievery. How does this
stealing have both literal and symbolic meanings throughout the novel for Liesel and the rest of characters?
● The Use of and Acknowledgement of Colors - In literature as in life, colors can have symbolic meanings. How did Markus Zusak use colors to express tone and to create bonds between characters in the story?
● Anger and Abandonment - To be left is to be hurt. Throughout the novel we see characters who
were left by the ones they love or who feel like they were abandoned. What impact does this abandonment have on the characters personalities and outlooks on life?
● Tolerance and Intolerance in Nazi Germany - dictionary.com defines tolerance as " a fair,
objective, and permissive attitude toward those whose opinions, practices, race, religion, nationality, etc., differ from one's own; freedom from bigotry." How do we see examples of both tolerance and intolerance in the story? What lessons do we learn from these instances?

Journal #10 (after reading part 10 and the epilogue)Date: __________
Question/Prompt: Markus Zusak took a lot of time and care to write this story, which is based on the life of one of his ancestors. Even though some of the characters were real, he added certain things to make the story more reflective of the things that actually happened during that time period in Germany. However, if you had the option to change three things throughout the novel, what would you change? Why would you change them? In what way do your proposed changes alter the story?

Writing Assignment: My Personal Colors
In the novel The Book Thief, the narrator, Death, sees the world, people, and events in colors. The opening of the novel, for example, are “First the colors. Then the humans. That’s how I usually see things” (Zusak 3). How do you see things in your life? … Death continues: “People observe the colors of a day only at its beginnings and ends, but to me it’s quite clear that a day merges through a multitude of shades and intonations, with each passing moment. A single hour can consist of thousands of different colors. Waxy yellows, cold-spat blues. Murky darkness” (Zuzak 5).
Your Task: Choose a significant or memorable day from your life and create a visual representation which focuses on colors to reflect the events, your feelings, and emotions.
Part One (writing):1. Choose a significant or memorable day from your life. It may be memorable because it was a sad
day that involved a funeral following the death of a relative or friend. Or perhaps it was a great day that brought you happiness and success through a competition or race. Type one paragraph explaining this event.
2. Recall your chosen day by completing a cluster of events, people, feelings, and emotions. Remember that you may have felt a range of feelings and emotions on the day, eg: nervous > worried > unsure > sad > lonely > okay.
3. Think about the colors you would use to describe these emotions. Make a chart with your emotion on one side and your color on the other.
Part Two (project):4. Now, using the newspaper, magazines and maybe even your own drawings or photographs,
collect images that represent the events from your memorable day and create a collage as a visual representation of the events, objects, feelings and emotions involved. Try to choose images that also reflect the colors associated with that day if possible. You can achieve this by your initial choice of image and its color, coloring particular images using pencils, crayons, pastels, chalk, or whatever you have on hand!
5. Your collage should be (at minimum) 8.5x11 inches. Be creative and have fun!!6. Be prepared to share your project with a group!!
Due: May 13 - Please attach your paragraph and color chart to the BACK side of the collage that you have created. Paragraphs should be in final draft form - in either typed (12 point font) or blue/black ink.
