We were in Mount Airy High School during tumultuous times. In some ways, all of us were affected by the Vietnam War and social change. We learned to question accepted norms and decide for ourselves.

Our great teachers at Mount Airy High School taught us how to learn, be productive, and to view the world objectively. I had great respect for all my teachers and was most influenced by Lorraine McKinney, Robert Holder and JD Bartley.

After graduation I went to WCU, graduated in 1972, and went to work for the family business. In 1976, I married the love of my life, Marsha Noah, North Surry class of 1970, and ASU class of 1974. We cheer for the Bears, Greyhounds, Catamounts and Mountaineers, except when they are playing each other.

We have two Sons, Kent and Justin, exceptional daughters-in-law, Melissa and Amanda, and three grandsons, Brodie, Brooks and Gibson.

Marsha is retired and I’m semi-retired. We spend a lot of time at Holden Beach. For recreation I like to fish, take long walks on the beach with Marsha, and play acoustic bass in a bluegrass band.
