6. Quebec is well-known for their poutines. The number of fries in each poutine in smaller than 50 but greater than 30. How many fries could be in a poutine in Quebec?

7. You pack 7 t-shirts, 5 pairs of pants, and 4 pairs of shorts for your trip across Canada. What different outfit combinations could you create?

8. The Hartland Covered Bridge in New Brunswick is the longest covered bridge in the world! What tool would you use to measure it? Why?

9. A new dinosaur fossil was just discovered in Alberta! It is twice as long as it is tall. If you were using a meter stick to measure it, how long could it be? How tall could it be?

10. On our drive through Nunavut, you see 22 legs. What different animals could they belong to?

Journey across Canada

Due to the recent travel restrictions, we are going on a virtual road trip across Canada! Check out this awesome video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nOHlLdS7Ybk and complete the questions below to learn all about our amazing country!

1. We are going on a trip across Canada! What is the weather like in Canada? What kinds of things should you pack? Draw a picture of your suitcase or list all of the items you think you will need.

2. As we go on our journey, we are going to learn a lot of new things. Before we learn something new, it is important to think about what we already know about that topic. What do you already know about Canada? Make a chart with your ideas or tell someone at home.

3. Since we are going on a trip, we need to bring Canadian money! Use page 8 to fill in the different coins or create your own drawings.

4. The first stop on our journey is British Columbia! British Columbia is Canada’s western most province. Its capital city is Victoria. British Columbia is considered one of the most beautiful places to live. The province has amazing mountains and beautiful beaches. If you lived in a beautiful city, what would it look like? Dream up your most beautiful city and draw it! Come up with a name for your city too.

5. Alberta is bordered by British Columbia and Saskatchewan. Its capital city is Edmonton. The Canadian Rocky Mountains border Alberta on the west. Alberta has deserts where more dinosaur bones have been found than anywhere else in the world. The Albertosaurus was found in Alberta and is from the family of the Tyrannosaurus Rex! If you found a dinosaur, what would it look like? What would you name it? Draw and name it!

6. Saskatchewan is bordered by Alberta and Manitoba. Its capital city is Regina. Saskatchewan is a prairie province with fields of wheat and large grasslands. The Burrowing Owl is an endangered species of Saskatchewan. They live in the province’s grasslands, but their habitats are being taken over by construction. Design a poster to teach other kids ways to save the endangered burrowing owl!

7. Manitoba is bordered by Saskatchewan and Ontario. Its capital city is Winnipeg. Agriculture (farming) is one of Manitoba’s main industries. Manitoba is one of the three Prairie Provinces. Prairie means grassland. Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba are covered in vast grasslands used for farming. If you lived in the Prairie Provinces, what would you grow? Draw and label your farm.

8. Ontario is bordered by Manitoba and Quebec. The capital of Ontario is Toronto. Ontario is also the home of Ottawa, Canada. This is where the government of Canada is. Our government passes important rules to help keep our country safe. If you were part of the government, which rules would you like to have in Canada? Make a list. Post your list to ClassDojo or TEAMS and check out the rules of your classmates. Do you want the same things?

9. Quebec is bordered by Ontario and Newfoundland and Labrador. Quebec’s capital is Quebec City. Quebec City is the oldest city in Canada. It is Canada’s largest province. Quebec is a French speaking province. Poutine is a famous Quebec dish. It is french fries topped with gravy and cheese curds. It was invented in the 1950’s and is now eaten in many other places too. Invent a dish of your own. Be sure to include a picture and a recipe with measurements!

10. Newfoundland and Labrador has 7000 tiny islands. Its capital city is St. John’s. It is the easternmost province of Canada. Newfoundland is well-known for its lighthouses, specifically the Cape Spear Lighthouse. Looking at the image below and using your knowledge of structures from our science unit, where do you think the lighthouse is the widest? What measuring tool would you use to measure how tall it is? What material do you think it could be made out of? What do you think its purpose is? 11. New Brunswick is one of three Maritime Provinces. Its capital city is Fredericton. The province is officially bilingual, using both English and French. The longest covered bridge in the world is in this province and is called the Hartland Covered Bridge! Using objects that you have at home, try and create the longest bridge that you can! Can it hold 1 book? 2 books? 3 books? Record how many books your bridge can hold before it breaks!

12. Nova Scotia is the second smallest province of Canada. Its capital city is Halifax. It is one of three Maritime Provinces. Nova Scotia is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. Fish are an important resource to the Nova Scotia economy. If you were a fisherman in Nova Scotia, what kinds of sea creatures would you expect to see? Check out the pictures on page 9. Label and colour each one.

13. Prince Edward Island is the smallest province in Canada. It is one of the three Maritime Provinces. Its capital city is Charlottetown. Prince Edward Island is Canada’s Potato Province (that’s a whole lot of Ps)! Potatoes grown in P.E.I are shipped all over Canada and other parts of the world. We use potatoes in so many foods. What are some foods that have potatoes in them? Try to list or draw as many as you can!

14. Yukon borders Alaska (a US state), Northwest Territories, and British Columbia in the south. Yukon’s Mount Logan is the highest mountain in Canada. Its capital city is Whitehorse. Yukon has Arctic weather and is a fantastic place to view the northern lights in the winter. Using any art supplies you have at home (paint, markers, crayons, sidewalk chalk, etc.), create your own representation of northern lights. Send them to Ms. de Jong or Mrs. Kuran so we can post your artwork on ClassDojo!

15. The capital city of the Northwest Territories is Yellowknife. In the winter, the northern part of the province can reach temperatures of -50 ◦C. What types of clothing would be beneficial to wear in this cold climate? Describe what you would wear if you were outside in -50 ◦C.

16. Nunavut was created on April 1st, 1999. It is the largest and newest territory of Canada. The most commonly spoken language in Nunavut is the Inuit language Inuktitut. Since we studied Nunavut as a class, we are going to test your memory! What kinds of animals live in Nunavut? Which one do you think is the most important? Be sure to give as many reasons as you can to support your opinion.

17. We made it across Canada and we are just in time for Canada day! Our whole class is going on a socially distanced parade! You are tasked to design something that uses air to move as decoration for the parade. (Think about things you have seen at Canada day celebrations that use wind to move. One example would be a kite! What else could you make?)
