Step 1: Choosing a Speech TopicThink about some topics that you would like to write a
speech about. Write down your top three ideas for possible speech topics.
1. _________________________________________2. _________________________________________3. _________________________________________
Take some time and brainstorm some ideas about these topics. What do you know about each topic?
Topic 1:____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Topic 2:____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________Topic 3:____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Based on your brainstorming, select ONE of the possible topics and write it on the line below. Remember that you must be able to talk about this topic for 3-5 minutes! Read over the rubric of how you will be marked!

Step 3: Expanding on the Ideas/Rough Copy
Now that you have all of the points for your speech, and have decided on the order, all your need to do is write your rough copy!BEGINNING
• Introduce your topic. • Is your speech original? Are you enthusiastic about your topic?• Remember your goal – is it to entertain? Inform? Persuade?• Do NOT begin with “My speech is about…” or “I’m going to
talk about…” • Choose a hook to grab the attention of your audience. This may
be in the form of a question, statistic, interesting or surprising fact, or intriguing anecdote. You might also want to tell a short real or made-up story at the beginning to introduce the topic.
• Beginning should introduce your topic – “Miss Duff and fellow students – Pioneer Days”
MIDDLE – DEVELOP YOUR TOPIC• Put most of the facts in the middle – save one or two really
interesting ones for the beginning and end• You should have AT LEAST 3 main points (main reasons why you
are right or major parts of your topic)• Zooming in your topic means sharpening it to a fine point. The
details of a clear focus will help grab your listeners
• Inject some humour – funny ways of saying things, questions that are funny, etc…
• Dig up the facts from books, interviews, the web, magazines, own experiences, etc…
• Make sure your have sorted your info into the different main points.
• Include details and descriptive language. • Think: who, what, where, when, how, why• Comparisons are an effective way to show the importance of
something. END – WRAP UP
• End your speech by recalling the main parts and adding a memorable punch line.
• Do NOT end with “thank you for listening to my speech”• End with an insightful comment, question, etc… to keep the
audience thinking even after you are done speaking. • Use a stopwatch, timer or your phone to time your speech.

Step 4: Revising and ExpandingRead through your rough draft and think about the
audience. Will they be interested in what you’re saying? Is there a strong opening and finish? Make any necessary changes. Use the following checklist to further guide you in this process.
Speech Checklist
Check the box if you can answer YES to the question .
• Did you read what you have written?• Did you stick to your topic?• Did you include everything you wanted to?• Did you leave out unnecessary details?• Do you like what you have written?• Is your speech interesting and lively?• Did you read aloud what you have written?• Do your ideas flow smoothly? Does it sound good when
you read it aloud?• Are your ideas clearly expressed?
• Is your writing organized logically, with a beginning, a middle and an end?
• Did you use descriptive language?• Does your writing show strong feeling and is interesting
to listen to?• Does your speech have energy?• Is your speech 3 to 5 minutes long? Aim for 4 minutes!
Step 5: Practice, Practice, Practice!Read your speech to a family member, friend, or
anyone who will listen! Practice your speech to make sure that it sounds how you want it to. Is it interesting? Did your message get across to your audience? How long is your speech? Spend at least 15-20 minutes per day practicing your speech out loud.
Speaking Hints:1. Relax. It’s good to be nervous. It lets you know that adrenaline is present to help you with vocal projection, descriptive gestures and a purposeful walk. Simply train the “butterflies” in your stomach to “fly in formation”2. Take a breath before your start speaking.3. Use sustained eye contact.4. Concentrate on sharing what you know.5. Use comfortable, but purposeful posture and body movements.6. Dress so you feel good about yourself when delivering the speech. Confirm your dress is appropriate for your topic.7. Be comfortable with appropriate silence and pauses.8. Practice, practice, practice. But do not memorize it!
Step 6: Cue Cards or Study NotesNow that you have practiced and know the basic flow of
the speech, use cue cards to write out your speech. Cue cards may have the speech written out word for word, but can also be effective if only key words, points or sentences are listed in order. Pictures or diagrams are also an effective
way to help trigger the memory without reading directly from the cards. A couple of hints: be sure to number the cue cards so you know the order if they’re dropped and print neatly and large enough for you to be able to read your information easily!
Step 7: Memorize-More PracticeYou should know your speech off by heart so that you
can make eye contact with the audience. You can have your cue cards in your hand but don’t rely on them while you’re saying your speech. While you are memorizing your speech, also practice using expression and intonation and an appropriate voice volume. Use a stop-watch to time your speech and stay within the time limitations.
Remember, perfect practice makes perfect! Good luck!
