Antiques Master

Sunday, 24 March 2013 New SeriesOver 12 episodes, the second series of Antiques Master features a selection of amateur antiques enthusiasts battling it out for the coveted titled of Antiques Master.

Do you know your Meissen from your Murano, or a Chippendale from chip-board? Can you put a price on the priceless? Antiques Master asks the tough questions to find out who will be crowned Britain's next Antiques Master.

Set against the stunning backdrop of Towneley Hall in the UK countryside, where the contestants battle it out in a series of challenges across all things antique, the series is presented by Sandi Toksvig and renowned antiques expert Eric Knowles (Antiques Roadshow).

Heat by heat, the antiques expert wannabes are eliminated after being asked to correctly spot fakes amongst treasures and accurately value auction items. The final rounds see the contestants' passion and experience truly tested as they come face to face with the most unusual, the most valuable and the rarest of antiques.

Three contestants are introduced in the first heat. Anthony Pritchard, from Hove, has a love affair with English furniture. From London, Stella Brooker, is a collector of antique dolls. And 25-year-old plasterer, Richard Cole, loves Chinese ceramics. Which of these contestants has what it takes to win a place in the semi-finals and move one step closer to being crowned Antiques Master?

David Attenborough's Galapagos

Sunday, 24 March 2013 FinalThis week David Attenborough looks at why no two islands in the Galapagos are the same. The imperceptible drift of a continental plate keeps each island biologically isolated.

He explores this evolutionary crucible, encountering finches that use tools and lizards that communicate using press-ups. For Charles Darwin, this was all evidence for his theory of evolution.

It also features final footage of the islands' famous giant tortoise Lonesome George, the last survivor of his species, who recently died. David Attenborough was the last person ever to have filmed with him.

Rev.

Sunday, 24 March 2013

Rev. is a contemporary comedy series following the enormous daily frustrations and moral conflicts of the Rev. Adam Smallbone (Tom Hollander). He's a Church of England priest struggling to remain relevant in his inner-city parish where he's largely ignored except by the demanding and irritating few who attend his church...

In this episode we discover there's a hole in the church accounts and the Archdeacon's ready to pounce.

But salvation appears to come in the form of a wealthy city banker (Richard E. Grant) who arrives at St Saviour's to join Alcoholics Anonymous.

However, Adam's mind isn't on balancing the books - serial blagger Mick (Jimmy Akingbola) has arrived on the vicarage doorstep with a much bigger ask than the usual twenty quid, and Adam takes a huge risk.

Pia Interlandi is a unique kind of fashion designer - she makes beautiful shrouds; garments to be buried in. SOUL tells the story of Pia's evolution from student and designer of ‘Garments for the Grave’ to practitioner, as she creates her first shroud for a client.

Her Nonno, or Italian grandfather, was the first dead body she ever dressed. His death and the dressing of him marked turning points in her development, informing her beliefs around the soul. It also showed her that the current rituals around dressing the dead body are in fact outdated.

It was with these realisations that Pia began her PhD in ‘(A)Dressing Death’ at RMIT's school of Architecture and Design. Now in the final stages of her degree, she is documenting the sculptural works she has created which blend fashion, forensics and a Victorian gothic sensibility. This includes photographing her 'dissolvable garments' which mimic the decomposition process that happens to a body once it has been buried.

Her PhD nearly complete, Pia now must begin the tricky job of finding clients and tailor-making garments to their specifications. Her very first customer is a woman named Kaalii who is in her 60s. Braced by the recent experience of burying both her parents, Kaalii is seeking the garment to prepare herself and her family for her own eventual death.

Pia's first collaboration with Kaalii is a success but not without its trials. Ultimately the experience reinforces her desire to pursue her career and lifelong passion of helping families create meaningful rituals for their loved ones' deaths.

Tractor Monkeys: Sam Simmons, Rebecca De Unamuno, Aamer Rahman & Genevieve Morris

Wednesday, 27 March 2013

Tractor Monkeys is a comedy quiz show that has mined ABC TV's wonderful and at times eye opening material to create a romp through recent fads, trends and social phenomena. With a bunch of some of Australia's best comedians along for the ride, Tractor Monkeys will see surprise appearances, bizarre objects being sprung on unsuspecting team members, and moments of planned or random chaos.

This week, host Merrick Watts and team captains Dave O'Neil and Monty Dimond are joined by comedic actor Genevieve Morris, writer and stand-up star Aamer Rahman, one of the most daring comics in Australia, Sam Simmons, and TV / radio regular Rebecca De Unamuno. Together they try to answer life's big questions such as, what will the surf lifesaving boat crew do when they finally catch up with that shark, why were 400 children walking the streets of Launceston in the 80s and what on earth is a Call Boy?

Tractor Monkeys is the first ABC TV show where audiences can play along with panellists in real time by downloading the ABC Companion app. It's easy, go to the program's website and follow the game play instructions for a chance to be on the leaderboard. abc.net.au/tractormonkeys

The Agony Of Life

Wednesday, 27 March 2013 FinalIt's a subject few people want to face up to, but our Aunts and Uncles are made of sterner stuff. Here they negotiate the final frontier and, on behalf of us all, answer the big questions of life; what are they most proud of, what's their biggest disappointment, is death to be feared or embraced, what happens to us after we die, and, in a perfect world, what would they like their last words to be?

No stone will be left unturned as Australia's funniest and brightest take us through the most important stages of existence - from child to adult, to creating and supporting families, to building and managing careers. And what after that? Should we sit on a hill and contemplate the wording of our epitaph, or travel the world? The good news is we don't need to worry about that because the Aunts and Uncles will be doing the worrying for us.

Kangaroo Dundee

Thursday, 28 March 2013 FinalA 6'7" Aussie who lives in a one-room tin shed in Alice Springs and spends his life saving orphaned baby joeys has become the toast of Britain.

Since childhood, Chris 'Brolga' Barnes has been infatuated with Australia's most iconic animal, and now spends his life rescuing and raising hundreds of orphan joeys for release back to the wild.

The close and heart-warming bond that Brolga forms with his babies and the mob of wild kangaroos that lives with him in his sanctuary, offers a rare and captivating insight into the fascinating family life of one of Earth's most charismatic and unusual animals.

This week, one of Brolga's three baby joeys, Daisy, is badly injured during a fierce windstorm and he's forced to put her down. He wanted his three baby joeys to be released into the wild together as they would have a much better chance of survival that way.

But the other two, Amy and William really need him, so he has to get on with the job. This includes six regular feeds of milk a day, ands lots of walks in the bush where they follow him as if he's their mother. He wants them fit enough to return to the wild when winter comes.

The joeys are taught how to go to the toilet, how to hop, and the tricky skill of somersaulting backwards into the pillow cases Brolga uses as the next best thing to a natural kangaroo mum's pouch. To achieve his objective, Brolga has 'become a kangaroo' watching, learning and mimicking the mother kangaroos that live close to him in the security of his sanctuary.

Who's Been Sleeping In My House?: Paddington

Friday, 29 March 2013

Adam Ford investigates a classic Victorian terrace said to have once been owned by an eccentric millionaire and a 19th century sea captain.

The Dolton family's prize Paddington terrace hasn't always been so pristine. \For many years it remained so derelict and overgrown, locals referred to it as 'The Witch's House'. In fact the tale of this classic East Sydney home mirrors the evolution of the suburb itself, from early settlement, to depression and then grand gentrification.

The Doltons have heard stories that at the height of its 19th century grandeur, their terrace belonged to a Chilean sea captain, who also held the post of Consul General of four nations. But as Adam discovers, there was a darker side to this colourful character, whose career eventually turned to ruin.

Behind the very public highs and lows of the Chilean sea captain, Adam also discovers the secret life of a reclusive multi-millionaire, who owned more than a 100 homes, including 'The Witch's House'. As we learn, her frugal eccentricity inadvertently saved much of Paddington from the hands of unrestrained development.

Last Tango In Halifax

Saturday, 30 March 2013 New SeriesDerek Jacobi and Anne Reid lead a stunning cast in this heartwarming six-part series from the writer of Scott & Bailey and Unforgiven. This is an uplifiting comedy drama about romance and second chances; about timeless love in a very modern setting.

Childhood sweethearts Celia Dawson (Anne Reid) and Alan Buttershaw (Derek Jacobi), both widowed and in their 70s, haven't seen one another for sixty years. When they're reunited via Facebook, they arrange to meet at a café in Skipton, and find that their passionate feelings for one another are instantly reignited.

But Alan's car is stolen, so he and Celia give chase. After a tense car chase at breakneck speed, Celia crashes her car into the back of Alan's and the culprit escapes on foot. Stranded in Skipton, they ring their respective daughters to come and pick them up, and while waiting discover that a misunderstanding kept them apart all these years.

Apart from being in their mid-forties and having tortuous domestic lives, arrogant, repressed Caroline (Sarah Lancashire) and happy-go-lucky Gillian (Nicola Walker) have almost nothing in common. Seconds before they're introduced to each other, they fight over a parking space and insult one another viciously. Inside the cafe, Celia and Alan introduce them to one another, and also announce they're getting married. The 'snotty bitch' and the 'brain-dead low-life trailer trash' are going to be sisters-in-law...

Inspector George Gently: Goodbye China

Saturday, 30 March 2013

Inspector George Gently (Martin Shaw) and his sidekick Bacchus (Lee Ingleby) investigate the suspicious death of Gently's friend and ex-snout, China (Tony Rohr).

The Coroner's office tells Gently that China was a drunk and a vagrant and died after falling in a derelict building. Bacchus believes the story and tells Gently not to feel guilty about his friend's death - he had it coming. But when Gently speaks to Terri Molloy (Christine Bottomley), the nurse who looked after China in his final hours, he gets a very different story - and with her husband a local copper, it seems the police are hiding something.

Gently visits his old colleague and friend Alan Shepherd (Neil Pearson), who is the local police Superintendent where China died. Gently gets the feeling that Shepherd is holding something back about the case. Then when the body of a teenage boy is found it appears that China's death and that of the teenage boy are inexplicably linked.

Meanwhile, Gently's relationship with Liz Thompson (Lucy Ackhurst) doesn't quite go to plan when things move much faster than Gently expected. As in the investigation, Gently struggles to do the right thing.
