Intellectual property offices play the most crucial role in assigning a legal status to intellectual property created by individuals, academics, government and industry. With changing global equations and aspirations, technological landscape and growing scientific knowledge IP offices face new challenges to ensure that no invention which has the potential of improving human life goes unattended without proper examination for granting a patent. New technologies also open up new avenues for protecting other forms of intellectual property. A change in the outlook of IP offices to embrace new developments in terms of practices, laws, examination methods and procedures, having dialogues with each other for timely examination and grant of rights needs to be explored.

Women in IPR including those engaged in science, engineering and medicine have shown beyond doubt their capabilities and success in the creativity domain through innovations in science and technology, creation of products including music, films and books, processes and systems. However, due to lack of adequate systems and enough opportunities the capacity and capabilities of almost 50% of our population has not been utilized in the large space of innovations. There is a need to explore the reasons and possible road map for inclusion of Indian women in this space and to contribute effectively in the fast-changing technology and business environment domestic and global

Session 5: Curated case-study presentations of IP Educators
IPR education and training remain a one of the focal points of the development of a robust IPR eco-system. The influence of science and technology in moulding IPR system has been known but, in the recent past one has seen a massive influence of technology in reforming IPR laws and practices. Artificial Intelligence and big data technologies are flooding the business and trade environment along with the IPR canvass. New paradigms of IP licensing and technology transfer have emerged which are impacting many application fields like ICT and agriculture and these paradigms need to be understood and applied in the Indian context. IPR education needs to be viewed from much larger perspective to cover all basic and new emerging areas practically covering all areas of human knowledge. Institutions engaged in technology transfer and IPR education and training will share their practices and experiences.

It is well known that infringement is detrimental to the interests of IP owners who leave no stone unturned for protection of their intellectual capital. The scale of counterfeiting and piracy is huge; the problem is being experienced globally and in India as well. The menace is wide spread and manner adopted for counterfeiting and piracy is becoming complex. Police and custom departments play a crucial role in fighting the battle along with courts, IPR holder and the IP office. The growing problem can be handled more efficiently with better coordination among these agencies. The consumers can play an important role by avoiding purchase of such goods. This session will bring experts from different countries as well as different states of India as well as other Countries to share their experience and best practices to minimize counterfeiting and piracy.

The Indian judiciary has risen to the occasion in resolving matters related to IPR especially in the post TRIPS arena with some important decisions. Enforcement of IPR is key to inculcating and developing a robust and creative innovation culture for national development and growth, maintaining and preserving traditional knowledge and positive impetus to trade and business. This culture promotes infusion of investments, both domestic and foreign, into all types of industry and agriculture and projecting India as a destination for ease of doing business. While Commercial Courts have been set up for handling IPR cases expeditiously, there is a dire need to encourage district courts to take up such matters. We would like to convey the experience of the Judiciary to a larger audience and share a vision for way forward for a robust enforcement system.
