Presenter: John Shipek, Supervisor Standards, Seattle City Light Description: This presentation will survey the variety of primary
distribution cable construction types available in the marketplace. Learn from our successful cable choices and mistakes as City Light has purchased and installed virtually every type. Attendees will learn how to approach developing material standards for primary distribution cable, see examples of City Light material standards, andbe provided an overview of our incoming cable inspection program.
Presentation 2: Voltage Regulators – How They Work Presenter: Steven L. Larson, P.E., Manager Substation Engineering,
Snohomish County Public Utility District Description: The distribution system voltage will vary over time as the
loads change. Regulators are applied in smaller substations and ondistribution circuits to provide customers a steady voltage despitevariations in the source. Diagrams of the regulator’s internal switchingsequence and pictures of the regulator’s components help describehow these voltage regulators operate to change the voltage withoutinterrupting service to customers. Understanding how they work isimportant to diagnosing and troubleshooting regulator problems.

Management and Large Projects, Seattle City Light Description: Creating reports requires a myriad skills beyond subject
matter expertise. Creating a report that actually gets read and achievesthe desired results requires understanding how to take a whole bunchof information and organize it into a logical structure, craft a compellingnarrative that is tailored to the right audience, and turning that intoa polished, readable final product. Focusing primarily on the morecomplex types of reports produced by a team, the presentation willprovide an overview of the process from draft to final publication,and how to maintain forward momentum and ensure timely deliveryof the final product. The elements of a typical report, the importanceof visuals (graphics, tables, diagrams) and writing, editing, andformatting tips and considerations.

Description: This presentation will provide an overview of theprocesses used by TEP to take wood poles from the “cradle to the grave”.
