Reading(30 minute session) Book: ‘Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats’

LI: To read and perform the fifth poem, ‘The Song Of The Jellicles.’

See the poem below. Or listen to it being read:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IRkYRDyT6k

Read the poem yourself and try to capture the rhythm and rhyme used in the YouTube clip. Perform the poem to your family.

This poem also inspired this song from the musical, as a challenge have a go at doing this:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vCcxmbdci_4

LI: To be able to sort features of text within a venn diagram. SC: I can sort different features of non fiction and poetry into a venn diagram.

Today you will sort features of poetry and non fiction into the right places on the venn diagram below. Think about what features you typically find in poetry and what features you would typically find in non fiction books.

See worksheet below.

LI: To explain different language features that can be found in poetry. SC: I can explain what language features can be found in poems.

What are language features?

Language features help you to understand what the poet is trying to say. The poet usually uses different features to convey his message.

Within poetry there are many language features that poets may use such as: AlliterationPersonificationPatternRhyme

Activity:Today I would like you to look at the definitions of what these language features mean. You can also look at examples of these.

Some of you will be able to recognise and explain what some of these

LI: To identify the features of the poem ‘The Song Of The Jellicles.’SC: I can identify the features of poetry that have been used in the poem ‘The Song Of The Jellicles.’

What features of poetry do you already know? (e.g. title, poet, rhyme, repetition, verses etc…)

Activity:Read the poem again and make a list of all the different features you can see.

Look closely at the structure. How many verses are there?

Can you find any rhyming couplets? Highlight these on the poem.

Can you find any repetition? Give examples of where you find these.

LI: To write my own verse of the poem ‘The song of the Jellicles’. SC: I can use different language features within my verse.

Use the work we have completed this week about the different language features the poet has used in this poem. Write your own extra verse using the features you know.

Things to think about:

What do Jellicle Cats look like? (Use similes or personification)

What do Jellicle Cats like to do? (use alliteration or rhyme)

Use what you already know from the poem to create your own verse. Remember it only needs to be a few phrases long. You know I prefer quality over quantity!

Maths LI: To mentally solve multiplication calculations.SC: I know my 2,3,4,5,6,7,8,10,11 times tables.I can mentally solve multiplication calculations.

To warm you up for this week we will start with waking our brains up to multiplication.

Complete the worksheets below. How quickly can you complete this in? Make a record of your time on your sheet.

LI: To use the grid method for multiplication.

SC: I can partition my numbers using the grid method.I can add my calculations.I can multiply a two digit number by a one digit number.

Last time we looked at multiplication most of us looked at the partitioning method:

14 x3=We can partition the 14 and x 3 against tens and ones.10x3= 304x3= 1230+12 =42

Now we are going to move onto looking at the grid method. Before we look at the formal method. The grid method is similar to the partitioning method but it is laid out differently:X 10 4

3 30 12 30+12=42

You still multiply

LI: To consolidate using the grid method for multiplication.SC: I can partition my numbers using the grid method.I can add my calculations.I can multiply a two digit number by a one digit number.

Yesterday you learnt how to use a new method to solve multiplication. Today you are going to continue to use this method to answer the questions below, remember to lay your grid out correctly.

To remind yourself of this method watch this:https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTxql8_dXec

If you feel confident with this method try having a go at the challenge.Remember a challenge is meant to be challenging!

LI: To solve multiplication word problems using the grid method.SC: I can highlight key words within my problems. I can solve a word problem involving multiplication. I can use the grid method to solve the calculations.

Today you will be applying your consolidation of the grid method to answer word problems.

See the questions below in the resources.

Mental maths test.

See worksheet below. If you can’t print these, then complete it on a piece of paper. Just make sure you include the date and question number.

Also this week make sure you keep practicing your 4,6,7 and 8 times tables, try the division facts too. You can use this website to help build up your speed:

by the tens and ones. Here is a link to explain this method https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTxql8_dXec

Have a look at the example below on the worksheet and have a go at using this method.

Don’t forget when you multiply by a 10s number you just move your answer once place to the right on the place value chart e.g. 2x2=420x2=40

RE Topic: Pentecost.LI: To describe how Christians celebrate Pentecost.SC: I can describe how the church celebrates Pentecost.I can write a message to a friend to celebrate Pentecost.

Read the passage below (see resources) and think about the following questions: In the reading, what were the

Why is Pentecost known as ‘the birthday of the Church’?

Why does the priest wear red vestments at Pentecost?

Why would parishes celebrate richness and diversity during Pentecost?

Activity:

After learning about how the church celebrates Pentecost. Consider how you celebrate it? What do you do?

Science Topic: Plants

LI: To understand what plants need to grow.SC: I can create a poster to give to a younger child explaining what plants need to be able to grow healthy and strong.

Watch the 2 nd video clip, what do plants need to survive: https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/articles/Mf5rhbTkHLZ3fbJzScyDvC/primary-science-plants

Using the information you have just listened to, create a poster that explains to a younger child what a plant needs to be able to grow healthy and strong. Don’t forget to explain why the plant needs that certain thing to grow.

Key words: Air, light, water, nutrients, soil

Geography Topic: Rivers

LI: To explain the ways rivers can be used.

SC: I can list some ways that rivers are used.I can list some advantages for different uses of a river.I can list some disadvantages for different uses of a river.

How many different ways are rivers used? Write down as many as you can think of.

Take a look at this video and look at the links:https://www.oddizzi.com/teachers/explore-the-world/physical-features/rivers/uses-of-a-river-2/ Once you have watched the video think about the advantages and disadvantages of the river uses. E.g. food, rivers can provide fish and other creatures for people to eat. However, if people are over fishing this can lead to some species of fish becoming extinct. Using the river to transports goods means that many people will have access to different types of goods. However, chemicals from the boats can lead to the water becoming polluted. Complete the worksheet below.

Challenge question:Can you surf on a river?

Key Words: preparation, leisure, industry, conservation, pollution.PSHE LI: To identify different strategies I can use if I make a mistake.

SC: I can identify the times when I could use these strategies and think about the positive consequences of using them. I can reflect on how these strategies will help me in the future. I understand the importance of learning from mistakes I have made. I can think about the importance of saying sorry.

What can we do if we do something wrong or make a mistake? How can this help you in the future?

We all make mistakes – it is a part of being human. Mistakes can help us learn and grow as people. If we make a mistake, we need to know how to make things right again. Making things right helps everyone involved to feel better and happier inside. Can you think of ways we can make things right after making a mistake?

Questions to discuss and answer: What are the main events? Why did they swap dad at the beginning? Why did the boy want to stop his sister from telling their mum? Where did they have to go to find dad? (use your map from last week

to remind yourself) How many houses did they have to visit? What items did they swap along the way? Who did they meet on the street? How did the children feel once they managed to find dad? On reflection should they have swapped dad?

Wednesday

An example of the beginning of my story.

The Day I Swapped My Sister for A Cat

One beautiful, sunny morning, I was feeling mischievous. Today was going to be the best day ever. Mum left to go to work while my little sister and I played nicely in my enormous, emerald garden. My garden is so huge that you could fit 4 swimming pools into it, so we had lots of room to run about. My friend Ore came over to play with us. When she arrived she was carrying a tiny, ginger cat with the most enormous, sky blue eyes I had ever seen. I instantly feel in love with it. I had to have that cat."Ore, would you like to swap something for your cat?" I begged Ore because I really, really wanted her cat. "What could you swap me?" replied Ore."I know! I could swap you my sister! She can do your chores. She can make you a sandwich and she can even be your maid," I told her."Really! Let’s swap then," Ore replied. So Ore gave me the adorable cat and she went home with my sister. After they left, I then played happily in the garden with my new cat. I’d always wanted a cat.

After a few hours, mum appeared. She was looking for my little, annoying sister but I knew she wouldn't find her. So I tried to distract her with the cat because he was so, so cute. My mum didn't like the cat and she moaned that there would be hairs everywhere. When she realised what I had done, she was furious and gave me that disappointed look. I hated that look because I knew I was in serious trouble. That minute, mum sent me out of the house to go and get my sister back. So off I went to Ore's house.
