21st Sunday in Ordinary Time“This saying is hard; who can accept it?”

Holy Rosary Catholic ChurchSacred Heart Church

A Marist Community

21st Sunday in Ordinary TimeAugust 26, 2018

Father Joseph McLaughlin, S.M., Pastor Brother Roy Madigan, S.M., Pastoral Associate Rev. Mr. Rue Thompson, Deacon

Don’t forget: Our Saturday evening liturgies at Holy Rosary Parish will begin at 7 p.m. starting with the liturgy on September 1st. The liturgies at the chapel at West Virginia Wesleyan College are scheduled for 5 p.m. each Saturday while school is in session.

The words of Jesus’ disciples in today’s Gospel must sound familiar. At some point in our lives, you and I have said it about some article of our faith. Christianity makes firm demands on our ethical behavior and gives no easy answers for suffering. Many disciples were confused and dismayed by Jesus’ words in the Bread of Life Discourse. Not all of them, however, had the same reaction.

When the disciples question Jesus’ teaching, he confirms its truth. “The words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.” For some, Jesus’ reassurance was not enough. These disciples do not question Jesus further or wrestle with their lack of understanding. The mighty deeds Jesus has done fade to the background. “Many of his disciples returned to their former way of life and no longer accompanied him.”For them, their doubt proves too much.Jesus turns to the Twelve, knowing that confusion lives in their hearts as well. Peter answers. “Master, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We have come to believe and are convinced that you are the Holy One of God.” Notice this is not a confession of perfect understanding. It is a confession of faith in Jesus. The precise words may still confuse them, but they believe the One who said them.

In our own lives, we face doubt, confusion, and disillusionment in our Christian faith. The same choice available to the disciples is available to us. Do you have faith in Jesus, even when you lack perfect understanding? Will you stay or will you go? What do you do with your doubt?

Don't Delay on Picnic PrepPlease don't delay any longer. We need you to let us know what you are bringing to the parish picnic on Sept. 9. Sign up today at the entrance of the church or in Marist Hall. You can also sign up to join with our Pastoral Council in cleaning up after the picnic. More hands, less work! Young people

in the parish are especially invited to help. We need your energy and enthusiasm.

Important Bulletin Insert

TodayThere is a statement from Pope Francis in today's bulletin that you really need to read. It concerns

the report recently released by the Attorney General of Pennsylvania detailing sexual abuse by certain members of the Church and how the abuse was (or was not) dealt with. A copy of the Pope's statement is available at the entrance of the our church.

AttentionThe Saturday Mass schedule will change

back to 7 p.m. on Labor Day weekend, September 1st.  The Mass at Wesleyan College will again be at 5 pm.  Please let Father Joe, Brother Roy, or a pastoral council member know your thoughts and

reactions to having the Saturday Mass at 5:00 pm.

Adult Faith Formation and RCIA Begins Sunday, September 16th

Come out and join us as we explore and learn more about our Catholic faith. Perhaps you have been Catholic all your life, but still have questions you would like to find answers to. Or perhaps you are returning to the Church after being away for a period of time and would like to reconnect. This is also the perfect opportunity for those who are not Catholic, but are seeking a greater understanding of the Catholic Church. The weekly meetings will begin Sunday, September 16th at 6:00 p.m. in Marist Hall. Meetings are open to everyone.

August SoulCore ScheduleThursday, August 30 - Holy Rosary at 6:00 p.m.

Our Sympathies Our sympathies are extended to Brother Roy and his family on the death of his sister, Eileen McGowen, who died last week. We also extend our sympathies to Joe Broslawsky and his family on the death of Joe’s mother, Anita, who died recently. May their souls, and all the souls of the faithful departed, rest in peace.

"Lord of the Rings"Have you read or seen the movie, "Lord of the Ring"? If so, you may be familiar with the term "lembas" or "waybread." It's the food the elves gave to the Fellowship of the Ring on their journey to Mordor. J.R.R. Tolkien, author of "The Lord of the Ring," was a devout Catholic. It is not surprising, then, that the "waybread" he writes of can be compared to the consecrated bread we refer to as the Eucharist. As pilgrims on life's journey we are nourished by that "waybread" or Bread of Life.

School already?! Yes! The start of the ‘18/’19 school year brings request for monetary support to supply nutritional snacks for our Washington District Elementary School Backpack Program.  Make your checks out to HRCC with “Backpack” memo and put in the offertory.  Cash works too; put in an envelope marked “Backpack” and put in the offertory.  Let’s make this another successful year of our WDES Backpack program!                                      Contact Amy Williams (304/472-6444) if you have time for “manual” labor or if you want to bake items and need details.  Thank you!!! Humor in the PewsTrue story: While Pope Francis was rector of a Jesuit seminary, a young seminarian was assigned phone duty.  While on duty, two visitors arrived to see the future Pope. They were members of the religious community called Daughters of Jesus. The young seminarian greeted them and then phoned Francis, saying, "Father, two Daughters of Jesus are here to see you." Francis quickly replied over the phone and in a deadpan voice, "I didn't know Jesus had daughters." The seminarian roared with laughter while the Daughters of Jesus looked totally puzzled.
