Phonics: This week’s sound is ‘ea’ Remind children of our rule: When two vowels go walking, the first one does the talking and our ‘a’ in this instance is silent. Listen to this sound with your child. Get them to practice saying it clearly. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yc36_Imtiig

Make sure they understand each word. Choose 3 of these words to put into sentences. Shared Writing: Write these sentences in your writing copy. Maths: Our new topic for this week is money. Begin by questioning your child about why we need money. Explain that we use money to pay for things that we need. Ask them to list some examples.

Next you will introduce some coins to your child – 10c, 20c and 50c (real life coins are best). The children should be familiar with 1c, 2c and 5c coins also from previous years. Remind them that c is short for cents and the number on the coin tells us how many

cents it is. If possible get children to sort coins into groups of 5c, 10c, 20c, and 50c. Ask them to identify these coins by name.

Activities to complete:

If possible get children to sort coins into groups of 5c, 10c and 20c. Do some rubbings of each coin using crayons. Observe the markings on

each coins, how do they differ? Label some items around the house with price tags e.g. 5c, 7c, 10c. Ask

children what coins they can use to pay for each item. Explore different ways of making 5c, 10c, 15c, 20c etc. Complete Busy at Maths pages 71, 72 and 73

Gaeilge: Our current topic as Gaeilge is ‘Sa Bhaile’ (at home). I’ve added some useful vocabulary below for this topic, some of which the children will be familiar with. I know it’s difficult but where possible get children to use this vocabulary at

home throughout the day. Vocabulary:Sa Chistin (kitchen)

doirteal cófra oigheann bord cuisneoir

Sa Seomra Leaba (bedroom)

Leaba piliúr vardrús lampa blaincéad

Sa Seomra Suí (sitting room)

tine teilifís pictiúr fuinneog tolg Sample Activities:

Get children to point out some of these items around the house- ‘Faigh bord’ (find the table).

I spy- ‘Feicim le mo shúilín rud éigin a thosnaíonn le c’ (I spy with my little eye something beginning with c).

Drawing activities- ‘Tarraing fuinneog’ (draw a window).

Writing: Can you write 3 sentences about items you can see around the house? Example: ‘Feicim bord’. More challenging example: ‘Feicim bord, tá sé dubh’.

SESE: St. Patrick

Read the story of St. Patrick below and discuss it with your child. Remind them that St. Patrick is the Patron Saint of Ireland. Why is he so important to us in Ireland? What traditions do we now have around St. Patrick’s Day?
