The Catholic Church currently does not deny Heliocentric Theory…but still finds it self at odds with various Scientific
discoveries!

VocabularyHeliocentric Theory: A sun-centered view of the universe with planets revolving around a set star.
Geocentric Theory: An earth-centered view of the universe with the sun and other planets revolving around our planet.
Galileo Galilei: Famous scientist/humanist of the Renaissance. He publishes Copericus’s earlier theory that the sun is the center of the universe.
Renaissance: Period of great artistic and intellectual rebirth in Europe from 1400-1700.
Inquisition: Catholic church court that was initially set up during Medieval Times- Catholic church strengthens during Catholic Reformation to combat strong Protestant change. People who discredited or questioned the church doctrine could be called before this court.
Excommunicate: Practice of not allowing someone to continue being part of the Catholic Church.
Did You Know?-The church hauled Galileo before the Inquisition:
-He does not recant! Thus many see Galileo as a symbol of “freedom of thought.”
-It is rumored that he murmurs under his breath “it still moves” as he was being sentenced.
-He is arrested, and is placed under house arrest. The church doesn’t apologize until 1993!!!
-Polls conducted by Gallup in the 1990s has found that 16% of Germans, 18% of Americans, 19% of Britons hold that the Sun revolves around the earth.
-A study done in 2005 at Northwestern University found that 1 in 5 Americans thinks the Sun revolves around the Earth.
