Wednesday 1 January The Naming of Jesus

Prior to 1990, the northern two thirds of Nigeria was largely blocked, until eight new bishops were consecrated. It is the second largest province in the Anglican Communion. Since 2002, the Church of Nigeria is organised in 10 ecclesiastical provinces.

For Windermere Deanery, Rural Dean Revd John Dixon, Lay Chair Helen Hoyle, Treasurer and Secretary Sandra Britton. For Shaping Mission Communities which will be effective in growing disciples. The Deanery includes part of the South Lakes Methodist Circuit, and part of the URC’s South Lakes Group of Churches as well as other ecumenical partners.

Thursday 2 January Basil the Great

Basil the Great, (329-368) was the eldest son of Christian parents from Asia Minor. He visited monasteries in Syria, Egypt, Palestine and Mesopotamia and spent a period time as a hermit and founded a monastery on the River Pontus. He assisted Bishop Eusebius for some years and then succeeded him. He defended orthodoxy against Arianism and established the Basilica, a hospital for the sick and poor; his influence affected both Eastern and Western churches.

The Province of Pakistan comprises 9 Dioceses; Arabian Gulf, Faisalabad, Hyderabad, Karachi, Lahore, Multan, Peshawar, Raiwind and Sialkot.

Expatriate Anglican chaplaincies were established in Brazil in 1810, with missionary work beginning in 1889, after the separation of Church and State. The Province, which is one of the few Portuguese speaking churches in the Communion became autonomous in 1965. There are 7 Dioceses.

Anglicanism was brought to the New World by explorers and colonists with the first celebration of the Holy Eucharist in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607. In 1784, the Scottish Episcopal Church consecrated the first American Bishop. The Church has 9 Provinces, 98 Dioceses and over 20 overseas jurisdictions.

The Episcopal Church of Sudan renamed itself as Province of the Episcopal Church of South Sudan in November 2013 and divided into eight internal provinces. The Diocese is part of the Province of In the Episcopal Church of The Sudan.

The Mexican Episcopal Church symbolically began with Mexico’s war for independence in 1810. In 1860, the newly formed Church of Jesus contacted the Episcopal Church in the United States, seeking leadership, guidance, and support. The fourth missionary

Bishop of Mexico was the first of the Church’s Bishops to be consecrated on Mexican soil. In 1995, the Church became an autonomous Province of the Anglican Communion.

The Diocese of Lake Malawi, Central Africa. The Right Revd Francis Kaulanda.Diocese of Southern Brazil, province of Brazil, The Right Revd Humberto Maiztegue.Goncalves Gippsland, province of Australia, The Right Revd Dr Richard Treloar. The clergy and people.

The Province includes Botswana, Malawi, Zambia, and Zimbabwe. The first Anglican missionary to Malawi was Bishop Charles Mackenzie, in 1861. The Province was inaugurated in 1955 and has a movable bishopric. The countries forming the Province are very different.

For notes on the Anglican Church in Brazil, see 2 January.The church first came to Australia in 1788 with the First Fleet, made up primarily of convicts and military personnel then free settlers soon followed. A General Synod held in 1872 formed the Australian Board of Missions; missionary work among the aborigines and the Torres Strait Islanders and was key to the growth of the Church. The Anglican Church of Australia is part of the Christian Conference of Asia and of the Council of the Church of East Asia.

The Universities Mission to Central Africa and the Church Missionary Society began work in 1864 and 1878 at Mpwapwa. The Province was inaugurated in 1970 following the division of the Province of East Africa into the Province of Kenya and the Province of Tanzania. The 19 dioceses represent both evangelical and Anglo-Catholic Churches.

The Province is the oldest in Africa. British Anglicans met for worship in Cape Town after 1806, with the first Bishop appointed in 1847. The 23 dioceses of the Province extend beyond the Republic of South Africa and include the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (St Helena and Tristan da Cunha), Mozambique (Lebombo and Niassa), the Republic of Namibia, the Kingdom of Lesotho, the Kingdom of Swaziland and Angola.

Historically a Spanish colony, the Philippines were predominantly Roman Catholic. When Americans colonized the country in 1898, Anglican missionary work began in the north and the south. The Church consecrated its first Bishop in 1963, four dioceses were established by 1971 and became an autonomous Province in 1990.

Friday 10 January William Laud (1573 – 1645)

William Laud was an English bishop and academic. He was the Archbishop of Canterbury from 1633, during the rule of Charles I, who admired Laud's learning and valued his advice. As well as his church preferments, Laud became increasingly

powerful in affairs of state and was appointed to several important offices close to the King. In matters of church politics Laud was autocratic and he enforced a collection of rules in order to maintain uniform worship in England and Wales, in line with the king's preferences. Arrested in 1640, he was executed in 1645.

SUNDAY 12 January The Baptism of ChristBenedict Biscop

An Anglo Saxon nobleman, monk and abbot and was an important figure in the early history of the Christian church in north England. Thanks to his importation of Roman ideas, Abbot Benedict was the founder and benefactor of the Monkwearmoth Jarrow Abbeys and is known for the library he created at Jarrow and for being the mentor of the Venerable Bede.

God for All: As we engage more and more people beyond the usual reach of the church, please pray for those on the margins, who often feel judged and not accepted by the church. Pray for the victims of hate crime suffered by some groups in the community.

Vocations: Give thanks to God for the joy of working with Methodist colleagues in encouraging people to think about God’s calling to individuals and communities in the county. Please pray for ongoing ecumenical planning for vocations roadshows in Summer 2020.

Thursday 16 January Antony of Egypt

Saint Antony (c251 – 356) was a Christian monk from Egypt, revered since his death as a saint and is also known as the Father of All Monks. The biography of Anthony's life by Athanasius of Alexandria helped to spread the concept of Christian monasticism, particularly in Western Europe.

The Diocese of Liverpool was founded 1880 and scopes a region that is both rural and urban.

Wales has been an independent province since its disestablishment and separation from the Church of England in 1920. It is practically coterminous with Wales and is the largest denomination in the country. The Province of the Church in Wales is divided into six dioceses, including St Asaph.

The conversion of Paul the Apostle, was, according to the New Testament, an event in the life of Paul the Apostle that led him to cease persecuting early Christians and to become a follower of Jesus. It is normally dated to AD 33–36. The phrases Pauline conversion, Damascene conversion and the road to Damascus all link to this event.

The Expatriate Anglican chaplaincies were established in Brazil in 1810, with missionary work beginning in 1889. The Province is one of the few Portuguese speaking churches in the Communion and became autonomous in 1965.
