Mrs. Harman and Ms. Jane's 3rd Grade Class

Parade of Fiction:Start thinking what book character you want to dress up as!  Don't forget you will need to bring in the book with you the day of the parade.  The Parade of Fiction is October 27th!  I cannot wait to see everyone's costume :-)

Reading:In reading this week we have been learning how to use context clues to define a word we don't know. We have learned different strategies like to read the sentence before and after to see if that helps us figure out tricky words. Here is one of the charts we have in our daybooks to help us.

WritingIn Writing this we have learned a new strategy for revising called the "cut and grow" strategy. This strategy we have really enjoyed. We learned how to substitute sentences in our writing. We select a sentence in our story that we would like to improve. Then we get scissors and cut the selected sentence out of the paper. They then tape the top half of their paper onto a piece of construction paper and create an improved sentence to write on the construction paper. Once the sentence is written,we attach the rest of our paper. We will continue praticing this strategy.

Math:In math this week, we began learning division strategies. We learned repeated subtraction, grouping, "one for me and one for you", and arrays. We read The Doorbell Rang. The story introduced us to division, teaching us that if we had 12 cookies to begin with and we were to share it with one friend, how many would we each get?

Theme StudiesThis week we learned about all the different land forms. We are working on a project with clay and Chinet plate to create Volcanoes, canyons, waterfalls, plateaus, isthmus, plains, mountains, rivers, caves, ocean, valley, island, delta, peninsula, hills and lakes.

Class ShirtsWe will be ordering class shirts this year! Our class will get to collaboratively design the back of the shirt. Please let me know by this Monday if you would like to purchase a shirt for you or your child. They should be around $10.00 a shirt.
