PROCEDURETIME INTRODUCTION

TOTAL:5-10mins

Introduction on poetry; “Today we will be starting a unit on poetry. What do you know about poems? Can you give me some examples?”

At this point I will have a slide that is a KWL chart focusing on the ‘What do we know’ aspect, I will write all of the students’ ideas on what they believe a poem is and what they know about it.

Move onto the ‘What do we want to know’ part of KWL chart; “Okay boys and girls is there anything you would like to know about poems?” I will write all of the students’ ideas on what they believe a poem is and what they want to know about it.

I will briefly introduce syllables to the students to be sure they are clear of what they are. (A syllable is the pronunciation of a word so how many sounds make up the word (demonstrate with clapping hands to show the syllables in each word).

I will now read the children three poems; the first one is a lyric poem called ‘Who has seen the Wind?”, the second one is a limerick poem called ‘Old Man with a Bread’ and the third one I will read is the haiku poem as an introduction to the activity.

After reading each poem I will pause and ask students; “What do you notice? Is there any patterns? What do you notice about the rhythm of the poem; is there a beat to it, is there a pattern with the syllables? Etc…” 1.Who has seen the wind? Neither I nor you: But when the leaves hang trembling, The wind is passing through. Who has seen the wind? Neither you nor I: But when the trees bow down their heads, The wind is passing by. 2. There was an Old Man with a beard, Who said, "It is just as I feared!— Two Owls and a Hen, Four Larks and a Wren, Have all built their nests in my beard.

TIME DEVELOPMENTTOTAL:5-10mins

“Now the last poem we will be looking at, and focusing on for our activity is called a Haiku. They are originally from Japan. A Japanese poet named Basho was one of the first Japanese poets to write Haikus. They started way back in the 15th century, so they have been around for a long time. A modern Haiku typically are very beautiful, descriptive poems with lots of adjectives and nouns that are trying to create an image in your head. These poems typically should be related to nature.”

“Now we are going to move onto an activity where you are going to work in groups of 2 or 3. First I am going to show you a haiku poem up on the Smart Board (3.Sun low in the west…Moon floating up in the east, Flowers in shadows) On your paper you will find a Haiku. Some of your Haikus were written by past students like yourselves. I would like you to read and discuss with your partner about what makes haikus special; because haikus are special kinds of poems that actually have a syllable pattern to them and I want you to figure it out.

Once you have solved the Haiku mystery pattern come up and show it to me. on the second half of the handout I would like you to write your own Haiku with your

group that follows the same syllable pattern. Come up and pick an image and write your Haiku about it. If you finish both activities draw a picture to go with the Haiku poem that I gave you. What image came into your mind when you read that poem?”

CLOSURE/TRANSITIONTOTAL: Students will be provided with a Haiku Rubric where they will grade themselves on

Page 3: stephaniesorella.files.wordpress.com€¦  · Web viewEnglish Language Arts: Competency 2: To write self-expressive, narrative and information-based texts (Student will contribute

5-10mins whether or not they properly followed the standards of a Haiku poem. “Boys and girls attached to your handout there is a rubric I would like you to grade yourself on your Haiku poem.”

Students’ will be asked to present the poems they came up with together. Also they will present the Haiku poem that was given to them and let the class know what image came to mind when they read it.

Go back to KWL chart to fill out the last section ‘What did we learn’; “Alright boys and girls can we make a list of what we learned from today’s lesson?”

DIFFERENTIATION Allow student to write about their own theme (does not need to be from the provided pictures) Give student a theme Give student a Haiku poem that is already started (has one sentence done and already has a theme) Give students a construction paper where there is two images for them to choose from

ASSESSMENT/EVALUATION OF STUDENT’S LEARNING See how students evaluated themselves on Haiku Rubric See if students Haiku Poem follows the Haikus standards KWL chart; what did students say they learned from the lesson

WHAT’S NEXT Can move onto to Rap poetry. Haikus were a good introduction to poetry, they taught what syllables,

rhythm and meter was. Now students can take what they learned from Haikus and apply it to making a Rap poem.

FOLLOW UP From the Haikus the students have written we could have grade 4 read them and draw pictures on what

came to mind when they read the poems.

REFLECTION Prior to the lesson I expected the children to respond well to learning about poetry. They are all very

eager to learn new things. I feel like connecting syllables to their names will help them understand it more, and retain the

information better. Some challenges may be getting students to see the patterns in the poems presented to them. I want

them to notice in the Limerick poem that there is a pattern with the syllables. My classroom management and my Corresponding Teacher’s classroom management are a bit

different. I am hoping to implicate a classroom management where children feel free to respond and participate. However, remember to raise their hands and to be respectful.

Post-Lesson: I found it went really well, the children seemed to enjoy it very much. They were all really engaged into the different kinds of poems, and were excited to write their own Haiku.

Some challenges as I expected were getting the children to recognize the patterns with the syllables in the Limerick poem. Once they did recognize the pattern and then the pattern in the Haiku poem they would often confuse the two patterns and incorrectly write their poems.

What I would change is how specific I am going to be. Make sure the children comprehend that each poem syllable pattern is completely unique to that poem.

What I learned after this lesson is to always go over your material thoroughly, on the PowerPoint I have written bread rather than beard and my students were quick to correct me. I learned to never
