Issue 6 “Ministry and Fellowship Together, Christ Forever” September 2012

The Ministers of Zion: Every member of the congregationThe Rev. Janice Marie E. Lowden, Pastor

From the Pastor’s Keyboard: We are what we eat?

Some time ago, a friend’s son told us that his father and he were researching the effects of violence-themed media and video games on the attitudes and actions of those who are exposed to them on a regular basis. This research was in response to the teen’s desire to buy a particularly violent video game to play with his friends.

Like my friend and his son, I wonder how the violence we see, hear, read about, or participate in daily through news media, radio and TV talk shows, movies, popular music, books and gaming affects our thoughts and actions in other areas of our lives. We’re inundated with it. We consume it. We support it by buying the video games, by purchasing the action figures for our children, and by making movies like Dark Knight Rises mega hits.

During the summer months, word and worship focused on Jesus as the “Bread of Life.” In John 6:56, Jesus says, “Those who eat my flesh and drink my blood abide in me and I in them….so whoever eats me will live because of me.” Jesus calls those who believe to concentrate their whole lives on him, on his word of love and forgiveness, on his call to service on behalf of others and on his gifts of life and salvation given through the sharing of the sacraments with the community of faith.

What is the source of your daily nourishment? If your diet this summer has become slanted toward the worldly emphasis on violence, you may be in danger of the effects of spiritual malnourishment. Join your sisters and brothers at Zion each week as we gather to receive the heavenly food that only Jesus can provide. Jesus invites you to come and be with him, to consume his love and grace through hearing and studying his word, and to be nourished by his life of peace and blessing through worship. As the old saying goes, “You are what you eat.” Come to the feast!(See entire article on Zion’s blog: www.zionsaltandlightjournal.blogspot.com )

SOCIAL OUTREACHTeam Leader: Randy Miller

898-8526 [email protected], what’s happening with your Outreach Committee? Habitat for Humanity: We have tentatively set the date for Saturday, October 6th. Details

need to be worked out, but we do know that we will not be involved in new construction. Habitat is presently working on several renovation projects. More information to follow – check the bulletin boards in the narthex and the Weekly Updates!

Mission Trip to Zion: It is still alive and well!! We are not scheduling a mission trip per se. Rather, when we hear of a need, we will build a team to offer assistance. So be on the lookout for members of our congregation or community who might need assistance with something around their home. Hear of something – call Randy!

Special thanks to Dolly Overly, Joanne Grim, Pastor Jme, Bob Louden, Randy Miller and Jesse Landis who helped with Adopt a Highway on June 13th.

I read in the Lancaster Newspaper that our food banks are in need of donations. Please keep Zion’s food bank in mind. During August, we are focusing on lb boxes of spaghetti, 1 lb boxes of macaroni noodles, and 1 lb bags of rice

MEMBERS OF THE CARE TEAM TO ATTEND STEPHEN MINISTRY EVENT ON 9/29

In a recent meeting of our Care Team, it was acknowledged that Zion truly lives up to its Mission Statement in regards to it ministries of outreach into the community at large. We, also, do a lot to care for one another in the congregation. That’s a blessing! However, we recognize that there are often needs of our members that the pastor alone cannot meet. There

needs to be a trained team of laity who can partner with the pastor to provide care and support for persons in times of crises, illness or when they are faced with long-term care of loved ones. For some time now, the team has considered seeking out training from Stephen Ministries. Several members of the team will be attending a Stephen Ministries introductory event on Sept. 9 in order to discern whether this will be a benefit to Zion. Learn more about Stephen Ministries at: www.stephenministries.org .

FOOD PANTRYby Diane Gerlach

During the month of May, the food pantry served 176 families which included 81 seniors, 236 children, and 292 adults, for a total of 609 people served during the month. During the month of June, the food pantry served 192 families which included 74 seniors, 283 children, and 340 adults, for a total of 697 people served during the month. In July, 180

families were served which included 71 seniors, 258 children, and 323 adults for a total of 652 people served.

Zion members contributed over 289 pounds during the months of May, June, and July. Thank you for your contributions of food and money to allow the pantry to continue to help the families in the Hempfield community who are in need of assistance.

Total food donations from all sources were: 9,652 pounds in May; 6,855 pounds in June; and 8,453 pounds in July.

In May our volunteers were honored at a luncheon held in the social hall. President, Jim Bear thanked the volunteers for the many hours they give each month to serving our pantry clients. The pantry is blessed to have over 90 volunteers who serve in many various ways……picking up bread and pastry from several stores; receiving food from CAP in Lancaster; delivering groceries to clients; stocking shelves; receiving, weighing and sorting food donations; receiving fresh produce from Penn State farms; greeting and registering clients; helping clients select their food items; packing and delivering food to client vehicles; those who manage the weekly and monthly paper work required; and the people who manage the daily operation of the pantry. Thanks also to the Board of Directors who meet quarterly to ensure the smooth “business end” of the pantry.

Beginning July 1 of each year, the pantry is required to re-register all pantry clients. Special thanks to Jennifer Pipkin and Diane Ramer who assisted as interpreters during this process. Currently, some of our pantry volunteers are assisting the Manheim Central Food Pantry to reorganize and “set up” their pantry to follow the organization and distribution practices of HAFP!

“God is good all the time…all the time, God is good!”

Farewell, Thank You, and Godspeed to Bob Hollinger

Bob was recognized on Sunday July 29 for his 11 years of faithful service and ministry at Zion with the youth and families of the church. After the service, he was presented with this “t-shirt quilt”, made up of logos on the t-shirts from various church events and trips Bob led and of which he was a part.

WHAT ARE VISITORS SAYING?!?!Sometimes the Staff of Zion hears only complaints about the worship services or bulletin formats or other ministries of the church from members. It’s good to know that those who visit us often have very positive things to say. Here are just a few from “First Impression” cards that are sent out to all those who visit Zion and leave

Ministry and Fellowship Together – Christ Forever! 9

their contact information either in the Guest Book or on the “Welcome” cards found in the pew racks.

8 a.m. visitor comments:This is what I noticed first:

“Lots of friendly faces.”This is what I liked the best:

“Being able to follow along in the bulletin and reading music.”

10:30 a.m. visitor comments:This is what I noticed first:

“Phil the usher” “The people we met were friendly &

welcoming”

This is what I liked best: “Music and media presentation.” “The friendliness of the members.”

One visitor added:This is what I liked least:

“The service had a lot of traditional components even though it was ‘contemporary’.”

The ages of these respondents ranged from 16-29 to 60+

Perhaps we should all attempt to, as the old song goes, “accentuate the positive, eliminate the negative” in our responses and comments. Constructive criticism, when brought to the attention of the

appropriate staff member or ministry team, is always welcome. We all want to

experience further growth and vitality in our congregation. Constant complaints,

anonymous criticism, threats, and demands are unhealthy for our community and will

not “build up the body of Christ” that is the Zion congregation who we are. Being

willing to be part of, or to take ownership of, positive changes only enhances the

health of our congregation and our ministries.
