An autocracy is a system of government in which supreme political power is concentrated in the hands of one person.

That person’s decisions are not subject to external legal restraints (laws). Often Dictatorships are considered

Autocratic governments.

Constitutional monarchy- a monarch inherits the right to rule, but is limited by laws and a lawmaking body elected by the people.

Absolute monarchy- a monarch inherits the right to rule and has unlimited power!

Mao Zedong, commonly referred to as Chairman Mao

(December 26, 1893 – September 9, 1976), was a Chinese communist revolutionary, political theorist and politician. The architect and founding father of the People's Republic

of China (PRC) from its establishment in 1949, he governed the country as Chairman of the Central

Committee of the Communist Party of China until his death in 1976. Politically a Marxist-Leninist, his theoretical

contribution to the ideology along with his military strategies and brand of policies are collectively known as

Maoism.

Kim Jong-il, aka Kim Jong Il (16 February 1941; unofficial

biography claims 1942 – 17 December 2011), was the supreme leader of North Korea from 1994 to 2011. He was

considered by the international community as the communist dictator of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK). He succeeded his father and founder of the DPRK Kim Il-sung following the elder Kim's death in 1994.

Kim Jong-il was the General Secretary of the Workers' Party of Korea, Chairman of the National Defense

Commission of North Korea, and the supreme commander of the Korean People's Army, the fourth-largest standing army in the world. His son Kim Jong-Un is now the leader

of the country.

Fidel Castro, born August 13, 1926 is a Cuban

communist revolutionary and politician, having held the position of Prime Minister of Cuba from 1959 to 1976, and then President from 1976 to 2008. He also served as the First Secretary of the Communist Party

of Cuba from the party's foundation in 1961 until 2011. Politically a Marxist-Leninist, under his

administration the Republic of Cuba was converted into a one-party socialist state, with industry and

business being nationalized under state ownership and socialist reforms implemented in all areas of

society.

4. In a mixed economy, individuals own most resources and determine what to produce. What are some of the examples of the resources people own, and what are two examples of what they could produce?

Legend orange - parliamentary republics (elect leaders and has parliament)

green - presidential republics, executive presidency linked to a parliament

yellow - presidential republics, semi-presidential system

blue - presidential republics full presidential system (also called a democracy in some countries)

red - parliamentary constitutional monarchies in which the monarch does not personally exercise power. The parliament (also called congress in some countries, holds most governmental power)

magenta - constitutional monarchies in which the monarch personally exercises (uses their power), often with a weak parliament which is many times hand-picked by the monarch.

purple - absolute monarchies (there used to be a lot more of them)

brown - republics where the dominant role of a single party is codified in the constitution (there isn’t a two party system, people only really have the choice of 1 group to vote for)

dark green - countries where constitutional provisions for government that has been suspended (or is no longer in power and can’t rule the people)
