Courtney Kennedy EDU 309 – Revised LessonNovember 18, 2016
Revised Lesson with Technology
Kindergarten.11.Economic.Scarcity – People have many wants and make decisions to satisfy these wants. These decisions impact others.
Students will be able to make a decision between two wants.
Prior Knowledge: Students will need to have some knowledge of needs and wants, and also have to have an idea of choices; however, to assess the prior knowledge, I will hold up flash cards to see if the students know what a need or want is. Then, I will hold up picture cards and have the students identify if the picture is a need or a want. I will also explain what a choice is.
Anticipatory Set: Describe on the board what a needs and wants are. Give examples, with pictures, after describing what needs and wants are. After lesson, allow children to give their own examples of needs or wants. Teaching Strategies: Discussion and cooperative learning as a group
Procedures:1. Describe needs and wants to the class (remembering, understanding)2. Make a table on the board (visual/spatial, understanding)
- One side needs, one side wants 3. Call one student at a time and have them state either a need or a want, when
they say it, record it on the correct side. When they state what they want to be listed in the table, be sure to ask if it is a need or a want (interpersonal, visual/spatial, auditory, understanding, applying)
Closure: Have an exit ticket with pictures of needs and wants. Have the students circle the needs and underline the wants. Students must have this completed and turned in the basket before they go to their next class.
Accommodations:
Some Most FewHave students work on an iPad to identify needs and
wants, especially if they have trouble
communicating.
Have students complete the worksheet with no
assistance and no prompting
Have the students complete the worksheet,
no assistance.
Name: ____________ Date: _________Exit Ticket Needs vs. Wants
Directions: Circle the needs and underline the wants.
In this lesson, I would be teaching students about the
difference between needs and wants and how they impact each other. In the lesson
above, I have not used any technology. Below I have changed some things to
incorporate in my lesson that will better the lesson by adding technology. In the
anticipatory set I could add the use of a YouTube video, which will allow me to
provide information about needs and wants in a different way to students. So the
exact way that I could change the anticipatory set would be:
Anticipatory Set: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RJJgUAhXxqw&feature=youtu.be - watch this video. While watching the video, pause when they show the needs and wants at the end and see if students can identify the needs and wants.
In the procedures portion of this lesson instead of just describing needs and wants
to my students, I could show the video to the students. This would give the students
another opportunity to hear about needs and wants. Also, instead of making a table
on the board, I could project one on the screen and allow the students to interact
with a Smart Board. So the exact way that I could change the procedures would be:
Procedures: 1. Watch the video on needs and wants (visual/spatial, remembering,
understanding)2. Project a table on the Smart Board, have examples of needs and wants
outside of the table (visual/spatial, understanding)3. Call on one student at a time and have them determine which side of the
table one of the examples belongs on. Make sure the student states what the object is and if it is a need or a want. (interpersonal, visual/spatial, auditory, understanding, applying)
With the addition of technology to the lesson, there were standards added to the
lesson. The Standard #4 of the K-2 Technology Standards can be added to this
lesson. This standard states that, “students use an array of technologies and apply
design concepts to communicate with multiple audiences, acquire and disseminate
information and enhance learning”.
