FROM THE RECTORYTHE BIBLE – ‘HIS STORY’ – A BEAUTIFUL ROMANCEDear All,

What is the Bible? It is a History book but like none other as it begins before the creation of our universe and finishes after its end. And it is ‘His story’- God's story which tells the story of our creation and salvation by our Lord Jesus Christ. It is also a beautiful love story of a King who is seeking a bride for his son and when she is found they marry with a great banquet and, in the truest possible sense, live happily ever after. And if you don’t know what I am talking about, Jesus is the Son and we, His church, are His bride united at the end of time with Him in a joy that lasts throughout eternity.

The Bible is history and romance – both these. And course it is not just one book: it is a library of 66 different types of books – history, biography, law, poetry, letters etc, written over 1000 years with about 40 different authors. It is the world‘s best seller every week of the year and most important of all it is God's Word to us His creation. Through His word he speaks to us and supremely he speaks through his Son Jesus whose story is found in this book which in the coronation service of our Queen is described as ‘the most precious thing this world affords’.

So how should we read it? It is not a book to read from the beginning from cover to cover – you will probably get bogged down quickly. We need to understand the context of what we read. The Gospels are probably the best place to start, which is the reason we are running a short 7 week course on Mark's Gospel beginning in February and going throughout Lent to the end of March. Do come along of you possibly can – details below.

You might also want to start working through some Bible reading notes like Explore which give you a short passage to read each day with some notes to help you put it in context and apply it to your daily life. Please email or write a note if you would like us to order you some.

As you read and hear God speak each day your spiritual life will grow and deepen. You will discover for yourself the truth of Psalm 119:

“Your Word is a light to my feet and a lamp to my path"One of the themes of the new Frozen film is ‘Do the right thing’. Only God’s Word the Bible can tell us what that is. Rev Ann

St Michael’s Sunday School meets each Sunday morning (except on days when Family Church meets in the afternoon) at 10:30. We start at church, and then go over to St Michael’s school for 20 minutes of Bible stories, games, crafts and fun. We then re-join the adults in church for the end of the service and refreshments.

All children, age 3-11 are welcome to join us. There are toys in the back of church for younger children, or they are welcome to come to Sunday School with an adult.

For more details about Sunday School, contact Liz Boland, Children and Young People’s Worker on 07903 200204 or [email protected].

We all get one life to live and deep down we’re all asking the same question – what’s it all about?

CHRISTIANITY EXPLOREDThe Best News you've ever heard!

Christianity Explored is an informal and relaxed seven-week course based on St Mark’s Gospel. It's for anyone who wants to

think about Christianity. You don't need to know anything about the Bible beforehand but it is a great opportunity to get to grips with one of the biographies of Jesus. You can ask any question you like or you can just sit and listen. It’s equally suitable for

those who have been Christians for a long time or for those who want to know more.

There are seven sessions, each stands alone; you are welcome to attend all or dip in and out. They start at 7.30pm at the Rectory,

69 Liverpool Old Rd and will finish by 8.45pm.

Frozen Church – 19th JanuaryWe had a busy

afternoon with almost 100 people meeting in the school hall. We watched some clips of Frozen and talked about how the themes of God’s love are shown through the film. We talked about how God’s love leads us to love other people and that this is the perfect way to be. We learnt a new song called “Nothing’s too big, big, big for his power,” as well as singing the old favourite, “Sing Hosanna,” especially for the verse, “Give

me love in my heart, keep me serving…” We played a blindfold relay game, pin the nose on Olaf and made paper plate snowmen, and marshmallow and chocolate snowman

From the Parish RegistersThe Departed“As in Adam all die, so in Christ may all be made alive” The ashes of Lily Hall, of Cambridgeshire, who died aged 91, were interred in the churchyard on 12th January 2020. Lily used to live in the parish and was a regular worshipper at St Michael’s when her husband, Les, was our Group Scout Leader.

We give thanks for the life of Bryan Cafferkey, aged 85, of Walmer Bridge, whose funeral took place on 13th January 2020. Interment followed in the churchyard.

I’m very excited to have been appointed as the new Children and Young People’s Worker at St Michael’s and All Angels. I grew up in a Christian household in Runcorn, and knew from being about 16 that God has called me to work for Him. Over the next few years, it became clear that this calling is to work with children teaching them about

God and the importance and relevance of the Bible. My passion is not just to teach what the Bible says, but also how that is relevant to us now. I believe that the Bible is not just a book of stories to teach us about God, but also a book that guides how we live and follow God now.

We moved to Preston in May 2018, when my husband, Chris, became vicar of Christ Church, Fulwood. We have two children, Daniel who is 16 and Alex who is 14 who both attend Archbishop Temple School. I also work part time as a teaching assistant at Broughton Primary School. Before we moved, I set up and worked for Grantham Christian Ministries Trust, which works with all the primary schools in Grantham, Lincolnshire, taking the Bible into schools (church and community schools) in assemblies, RE lessons and lunchtime clubs. I also lead a Scripture Union Beach Mission each summer in

Sutton on Sea, Lincolnshire. This is a big job in itself as I am in overall charge of the whole two-week event!

My vision for the work here is for more children to come along to church events, both Sunday School and Family Church and to be excited by the Bible and by what God can do in their lives. I will be in church two Sunday mornings each month and for Family Church. This means that I can also keep my connections at Christ Church, where I also lead the Junior Church and Messy Church. I look forward to getting to know you all well over the next few weeks and months and my prayer is that we can work as a whole church to see God working in the village.Liz Boland

Hoole St Michael CE Primary School – January Prayer Spaces Day – Please see photos on our

school website: www.hoole.lancs.sch.uk (Christian Distinctiveness)

Report by Jude (Y6)On Tuesday 7th of January 2020 we held a whole

school Prayer Space day. The children visited gazebos and tables laid with an array of Epiphany-based activities; with each station, they had 8 minutes to complete the adult-led task and then said a prayer to finish.

There were nine different stations/activities, which included smelling Frankincense, Myrrh, feeling different textures of gold, and numerous other interesting stations.

The most popular activity was the station where we got to taste chocolate coins! Not only was this activity exciting and tasty, we learnt that gold could take many forms and that it is considered THE MOST valuable but we learnt that God values US even more!

To help us all understand and enjoy our Prayer Space day, many kind helpers from our school and wider Christian community led the children’s fun-packed activities. They came from churches far and wide (like the Three Wise Men) these included: New Longton Methodist, Tanterton Christian Fellowship and Hoole St Michael’s. Individually, each class experienced the exciting events, with many of the younger children doing so for the first time and loving all the new facts they learnt.

To sum up our inspiring and educational day, we learnt about the Epiphany and what it means to Christians through fun-filled chat, gluing, drawing, cutting and eating!!!

We hope that everyone at HSM appreciated all the help and hard work that was put into setting up and running the Prayer Spaces project…Bring it on, 2021!

GlossaryEpiphany-Epiphany, or Three Kings’ Day, is a Christian holiday that is observed on January 6th. It is one of the three most important days, along with Christmas and Easter, in the Christian church. Epiphany means “showing”. This important Festival commemorates the visit of the Wise Men to Jesus and celebrates the fact that Jesus comes as the Saviour of all mankind.Prayer Spaces -They provide creative ways for pupils to reflect on, and - if they want to - pray about their identity, their relationships with others, and issues of injustice around the world. Our Prayer Space day focused on Epiphany and the journey of the three Magi.

St James the Least of AllParish Pump Editor: The Rev Dr Gary Bowness continues his tongue-in-cheek letters from ‘Uncle Eustace’…

On why pews are better than chairs

The RectorySt James the LeastMy dear Nephew Darren

While it was good to see you when you visited us last Sunday, your suggestion to our churchwardens that chairs would be far more comfortable than our pews was not well received. You must remember that significant numbers in any congregation firmly believe that the more uncomfortable they are, the holier they must be. Pews, generally designed several centuries ago when legs were shorter and bottoms smaller, are conducive neither to comfort nor sleep - although Colonel Marchington achieves the latter unerringly every Sunday within minutes of arrival.

At least with pews, parishioners can make some pretence at kneeling, adopting that peculiar crouch only ever seen in church life. Attempt that with chairs and you are assured of sending the one in front sliding across the floor with a shriek. Chairs may be all very well in your own church, so you can create space for the delights of liturgical dance and baby clinics, but we prefer something more immovable. Little Miss Thripp has, over the years, created something of a nest where she sits, quietly bringing in cushions, travelling rugs and her own supply of books and peppermints. As for Major Hoare, I suspect he is installing a drinks cabinet in his pew.

Pews, unlike rows of chairs, also create territorial behaviour. If a visitor should sit in a pew where regulars have sat for the last 50 years, it is regarded as if it were the invasion of Poland. One innocent family once chose the pew where generations of the Psmith family have sat since

22

Page 24: d3hgrlq6yacptf.cloudfront.net€¦  · Web viewCHURCH OFFICERS. Rector: The Reverend Ann Templeman. The Rectory, 69 Liverpool Road, Much Hoole, PR4 4RB. Tel: 01772 448515 and mob:

dinosaurs roamed the land. The Psmiths had no intention of ceding territory peacefully and so for the whole of Mattins, one pew which should have held 6 people sat 9. When they stood to sing, the line exploded into the aisles on both sides, returning to their compressed state, necessitating staggered shallow breathing, when re-seated.

I will concede, however, that we made one mistake some years ago when the pews were re-varnished without having been fully cleaned first. The result is that every time the congregation stands, the organ is drowned out by the sound of tearing, while coats and jackets reluctantly part company with wood.

No, your congregation may relax in the luxury of padded chairs, but we will stoutly maintain our holy discomfort.Your loving uncle,Eustace

Valentine’s Day – 14th February There are two confusing things about

this day of romance and anonymous love-cards strewn with lace, cupids and ribbon: firstly, there seems to have been two different Valentines in the 4th century - one a priest martyred on the Flaminian Way, under the emperor Claudius, the other a bishop of Terni martyred at Rome. And neither seems to have had any clear connection with lovers or courting couples.

So why has Valentine become the patron saint of romantic love? By Chaucer’s time the link was assumed to be because on these saints’ day -14 February - the birds are supposed to pair. Or perhaps the custom of seeking a partner on St Valentine’s Day is a surviving scrap of the old Roman Lupercalia festival, which took place in the middle of February.

One of the Roman gods honoured during this Festival was Pan, the god of nature. Another was Juno, the goddess of women and marriage. During the Lupercalia it was a popular custom for young men to draw the name of a young unmarried woman from a name-box. The two would then be partners or ‘sweethearts’ during the time of the

celebrations. Even modern Valentine decorations bear an ancient symbol of love - Roman cupids with their bows and love-arrows.

There are no churches in England dedicated to Valentine, but since 1835 his relics have been claimed by the Carmelite church in Dublin.

SHROVE TUESDAY by Ellen Castelow (extract)Pancake Day, or Shrove Tuesday, is the traditional feast day before

the start of Lent on Ash Wednesday. Lent – the 40 days leading up to Easter – was traditionally a time of fasting and on Shrove Tuesday, Anglo-Saxon Christians went to confession and were “shriven” (absolved from their sins). A bell would be rung to call people to confession. This came to be called the “Pancake Bell” and is still rung today.

Shrove Tuesday always falls 47 days before Easter Sunday, so the date varies from year to year and falls between February 3 and March 9. In 2020 Shrove Tuesday will fall on 25th February.

Shrove Tuesday was the last opportunity to use up eggs and fats before embarking on the Lenten fast and pancakes are the perfect way of using up these ingredients.

The pancake has a very long history and featured in cookery books as far back as 1439. The tradition of tossing or flipping them is almost as old: “And every man and maide doe take their turne, And tosse their Pancakes up for feare they burne.” (Pasquil’s Palin, 1619).

The ingredients for pancakes can be seen to symbolise four points of significance at this time of year:Eggs ~ CreationFlour ~ The staff of lifeSalt ~ WholesomenessMilk ~ Purity

In the UK, pancake races form an important part of the Shrove Tuesday celebrations – an opportunity for large numbers of people, often in fancy dress, to race down streets tossing pancakes. The object of the race is to get to the finishing line first, carrying a frying pan with a cooked pancake in it and flipping the pancake as you run.
