These processes require linkage between the word identification system and the comprehension system, with the lexicon in the linking role. Vocabulary instruction is one reading instruction which there is minimal controversy. Educators agree that it is possible to extend students knowledge of word meaning and it is important to do so because of the relationship between this knowledge and reading comprehension. As a teacher I could use the opportunity to provide and extend children's vocabulary knowledge and to develop their interest and motivation to want to learn words and to monitor their own vocabulary learning.
