We are incredibly excited about having all of your different energies, practices, enthusiasms and personal stories buzzing around our building, working with us to create new amazing projects to benefit people across Powys.
Art and Health is a growing field, with evidence building all the time about the benefits to health and well-being. As evidence grows, so will work opportunities. A major aim of this course is that you will be better placed to not only respond to commissioned and other work opportunities, but also to work with arts and health and social care organisations to generate work and contribute to funding applications in order that your project ideas get funded.
This is a professional level course that will build over the 8 months, giving you many opportunities to develop your skill base, your knowledge and your own practice.
Please do get in touch if you would like to talk about any aspect of the course – I work Mon-Wed-9-4
Please note: Closing date for applications is Midday Monday 26th August
Interviews 6th September in Llandrindod – Skype interviews can be arranged
A note about Welsh language: The course will be delivered in English, however if you wish to use Welsh we will want to work with you to find the best way we can support that. As an organisation we are working toward a better understanding of Welsh language and culture, an improved language skill base and an increase in our bi-lingual material.
A note about accessibility: Our building is fully accessible. If you are asked to an interview, we will ask you about any access needs you have and if you get a place on the course we will do our best to meet your access needs. We regret that we do not have the funding to pay for personal assistance costs or accommodation. We will of course welcome personal assistants, or assistance dogs. We do have some funding to pay for sign language interpreters and/or lip readers.
I very much look forward to hearing from you

Art is Power: An Arts and Health Training Course
1 Introduction:
Celf o Gwmpas has been in existence for 22 years. Our focus is threefold:
To provide arts and health opportunities for disabled and other socially excluded people in our communities.
To offer mentoring and training for artists and especially artists with disabilities To provide a creative and community hub in Llandrindod Wells.
We have a fully accessible building with workshop, gallery and rehearsal/meeting space.
Celf o Gwmpas has been successful in securing funding from the Arts Council of Wales to run this exciting new project which will bring professional level arts and health training to Powys.
2. Training programme: Facilitated by Maria Hayes,
Maria has a wealth of experience in designing and delivering training in arts and health as well as working with many different groups.
Key features of the training programme:
Two days a month – October 2019 – June 2020. The days will be a Tuesday and Wednesday, dates attached.
Disability Arts Cymru and Impelo will be involved in the recruitment of trainees and will be supporting the project. We hope to attract people from across disciplines.
There will be a combination of taught input, action-learning and development of new work Action learning elements will lead to three new projects proposals. Celf o Gwmpas staff
will support work on funding bids, with the intention that trainees will be funded to deliver the projects they have designed in 2021/22.
Links developing with University of Wales Aberystwyth with potential to look at continuing this as a pathway to courses at Aberystwyth.
Supported by Powys County Council, Powys Teaching Health Board, University of Wales Aberystwyth, PAVO

3. New Projects
The training cohort will, via the action learning aspect of the programme, be asked to form three groups, each one of which will then design an arts and health project. There will be three project briefs from which to work. Celf o Gwmpas staff will work with the three groups as their ideas develop and will look at funding opportunities to maximise the chances of these projects being delivered. Assuming success, these will be delivered in 2020/21. The three projects will respond to:
The project briefs focus on:
Intergenerational movement Experiences of oppression Paving the way for international work with Syrian families settled in Powys
The evaluations that will be planned into these projects will aim to assess well-being outcomes for participants.
Our intention, when looking at funding opportunities, will be to run each of these projects in at least three locations each across Powys. Part of the learning in the project development for the trainees will be to ensure collaborative working with other arts organisations across Powys. We will also be looking at how we define ownership of the content and processes in order to maximise ongoing impact.
4 New Work
The training cohort will be encouraged to develop their own new work in response to their experiences.
5. The Back Story
Our creative thinking began by looking back at our inspiring mentoring work of the previous decade.
We realised that our focus had been on the development of mentees arts practice, but that the need for practitioners who could run arts and health programmes meant acquiring additional

skills. We also recognised that whilst we had been very successful in developing an outward looking focus, we had not built sufficient contact within the Welsh arts world.
Our creative idea therefore was to develop a project that would address these needs; maintaining a focus on artistic practice and development as well as creating a pool of trained arts and health practitioners whose expertise will be in increasing demand.
We have long held both excellence and a presumption of ability as core values and both are drivers for the project. We are deeply committed to delivering arts and health programmes that are of the highest standards and we therefore need practitioners who work from the same value base. As part of the regional thinking and developments in arts and health we want the training and support we deliver to ensure that practitioners are inspired by these values and confident in implementing them in their work.
