Vicki Turnage joined the meeting and Darren Morris started the meeting. They gave an update on the conference preparations. We are at 422. Arkansas will be bringing 60 people. Keynotes are in place as well as breakout sessions. Many SABE members are doing workshops. Everything is coming together. The tour of the civil rights museum in Birmingham is in place as an option. Everyone will have to plan his or her own arrangements. All states are encouraged to prepare banners. However, banner flags are going to be available for states

that may not have banners. Vicki Turnage also provided additional updates on the conference. We are releasing the room obligations so that we will not have any unwanted expenses. Book rooms as soon as possible. Audio Visual and food costs are the most expensive. All logistics of the conference are being given special attention. SABE Awards will be given out and a plan is being worked on as to who will be giving out the awards. The state of Colorado will announce that they will host the 2020 conference in Birmingham.

Tia discussed inclusion international. They do a lot of work with people with disabilities in other

countries. They are doing a survey on information on what is important around self advocacy. It will be information that will help everyone. Sue Swenson is now the President of inclusion international. It is best to hear from people themselves. They have set up for people to participate in Empower Us committee. There are 8 questions to answer. At the world congress conference, the survey information will be shared. The call to action will be a worldwide effort. There will be many countries participating. We want to make sure the U.S has a strong voice on making sure that our information is known. This will help self advocacy overall. It will help with tools and resources for everyone. Everybody is at different stages and levels of self advocacy.

Discussed grant funds. Assessed grants being on schedule. Auditor provided information with outcomes presented in May 2018. Reviewed the liability of national conference. Graphs on variances presented.Eric McVay approving the report made a motion. Tia Nelis seconded the motion. All members in favor of the vote. Motion passed.

Grassroots CommitteeDarren Morris

Discussed information regarding the online self advocacy link that SARTAC is updating with the University of Minnesota. An effort to engage members on how they have recruited people and challenged members acknowledged how many people are coming from their state.

It was suggested that when information is needed to be shared then Members need to get advisors to make hard copies to people who do not have internet. Make the copies and send out the information.

You want legislator to listen to you and work for you. They tend not to know as much about us so it is important for them to know us. Get to know the person who does the appointments for the legislator. Build relationships and make sure that all self advocates are on the same page. You may have to decide who the point person is for the group to give the message. Make sure you do some role plays before you go to the meeting. Think about your story and be able to message the story as to what would happen if taken away. Tell why the community is important to you. There are people on both sides of the fence. No services are safe. We will create some fresh policy statements around the issues. A press conference will be done at the national conference. Get some buttons on Medicaid.

The newsletter will be given out at the Policy Seminar. We identified John Britton in the Spotlight. Some other members will be interviewed while at the conference. 422 people have membership. Only 198 completed. Board Members membership has been evaluated. The website is being worked on for accessibility. If you are a keyboard user, you only have to press limited buttons making access more user friendlier. There are options for enhancing size in font. The pictures will be enhanced also. It was suggested by Eric McVay that the log needed to be red, white, and blue since it represents the United States of

We have new fellows for the projects. These fellows represent the following states:

California, Vermont, Indiana, New York, Washington, and Maryland. The current fellows will present their projects at the National Conference in Birmingham. The self advocacy toolkit is in its final stage and has been submitted. ASAN already has toolkit on the website. A comparison of African American, LBGTQ, and Self Advocacy struggles/history. SARTAC is asking for states to visit the “Ask me Anything” table that will be set up at the conference. SARTAC will also go to West Virginia to support them regarding technical assistance.

There is a new logo that has been updated and will be on the t-shirts for the conference. Distance Training for 2018: Arkansas, Indiana, California, and Washington. We have always asked by Massachusetts for Protection and Actions states to gain more insight in the ‘rev up to vote’ project. National Down Syndrome Society has partnered with Go Voter and Essie recently presented at their meeting. Go Voter has been contacted by Michelle Bishop and work with Lee Brice on who, what, why on how guardianship have been barrier on voting. This is an online newsletter that is looking to collect stories. There will be voting schedule that will be presented at the conference. We will also have handouts and looking for volunteers.

There will be raffle prizes from the voter project. North Carolina, Florida and Illinois will have conference registration cost based on being the highest states with the biggest number on the surveys. We will also be hosting a panel at the conference with Tom Hicks and Michelle Bishop during lunch time session. The students will also support voting with University of Florida. We also have nominated for the presidential award that will be given during the awards ceremony. Go Voter will have questions on the ballot for informational purposes. The questions are: Do you have a guardian? Does the guardian keep you from voting? Did you vote in the last election? AAPD does the REV up campaign. REV stands for: Register, Educate, and And Vote. We will participate in the NDRN National Conference in Baltimore.

Employment Project

We will work with NASDDDS on the next white paper. NASDDDS would like to get definition from SABE on what is informed choice and supported choice

The minutes were distributed. Members are asked to send Heidi their confirmation.

Members will be taking the metro red line for the disability policy seminar. We will go Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.
