Vihman – The Story of the Bear Man

Annie – ‘bout the bear…

Vihman – Okay

Annie – Bear Man

Three girls, they…

anise, gathered anise, anise clover.

That’s so. shabu: a we call it, too, some kind.t ̪

Gathering anise, and they, she had two younger sisters, and they picked anise, picking, picking, picking…

Their baskets there now filled, and she still, now…

Now getting dark, night is falling, because (of that) now (they) go, while she… when she was still gathering that (anise,)

Bear, Bear person,

Because Bear person took her,

her younger sisters cried for their older sister because (Bear Man) took (her) away.

The Bear (said), “(I) am not going to do anything to her, not going to kill her,”“I want her.”

“So go home.” he said to them.

Page 7:   · Web viewBear Man (AL) Recorded by Vihman. Vihman – The Story of the Bear Man. Annie – ‘bout the bear… Vihman – Okay. Annie – Bear Man. kawiyama:t̪ayaʔ subuyaʔ

So then they carried the clover home.

So then that Bear carried the woman towards his house.

He took her towards what was called “self standing house” (the name of where Bear Man lived.)

And there he carried her home.

And he, the one carrying her there, he

dropped white feathers, leaving a trail of white feathers, he made a trail towards his house, carrying (her) home.

Taking her (to his) home.

And there, Bear Old Woman’s people lived there too.

His mother’s people, his grandmother’s people.

So then, taking (her) home there, making (her) sit there, and those

girls, the younger sisters, they went to (their) house, telling their mother’s people (Bear Man) took her, saying.

Because of that, their father, the next day, their father went

searching (for her.)

And he found that trail of white feathers, so then

Page 8:   · Web viewBear Man (AL) Recorded by Vihman. Vihman – The Story of the Bear Man. Annie – ‘bout the bear… Vihman – Okay. Annie – Bear Man. kawiyama:t̪ayaʔ subuyaʔ

from that he walks, from that he walks towards the “self standing house.”

And there he went to the house.

So then, there, to him those (Bear Old Women)

give him that food,

giving bread, Indian bread, giving meat, giving blankets,

to him there, those Bear Old Women were.

So then, from there, he went home taking (that) with a pack basket.

And taking that inside.

And he told his wife that she (their daughter) must be staying there.

(He) showed his wife the things that were given to him there.

Blankets,

rabbit skin blanket,

deer blanket,

puma blanket,

all kinds of blankets

(he) brought home.

Page 9:   · Web viewBear Man (AL) Recorded by Vihman. Vihman – The Story of the Bear Man. Annie – ‘bout the bear… Vihman – Okay. Annie – Bear Man. kawiyama:t̪ayaʔ subuyaʔ

And after that,

a year after that, she went there to the house,

leading children (to the) house,

her two children going to the house.

And she carried food (to the) house, carried blankets (to the) house, and she…

She put that with pack baskets there (where) her mother’s people were,

(but) she did not go inside.

The children were also outside,

two boys,

two small bears.

So then, that… and she went there where they gathered clover, there she was eating clover,

not going in, not going in to her mother’s people’s (place) there, not sitting next to her mother’s people.

Eating clover, so then her younger sisters (said),

“Hey, a bear, bear, bear, bear, bear!” her younger sisters said, jeering.

Page 10:   · Web viewBear Man (AL) Recorded by Vihman. Vihman – The Story of the Bear Man. Annie – ‘bout the bear… Vihman – Okay. Annie – Bear Man. kawiyama:t̪ayaʔ subuyaʔ

So then, she (said), “Hey, because your nephew said (the) clover here tastes good, I am (here),” she said.

So then, from there, now she got that pack basket,

taking that pack basket going home.

Leading the children home, she did not talk with her mother’s people, she did not talk with her father’s people.

Going to (her) house, and now bear fur grew from her hands,

she grew bear teeth now, becoming a bear, and the children also were bears.

She led (them) to the house, going back towards where she was.

And thus the moon is setting…
