Hello and I hope everyone is keeping well. As we continue to be away from the school this week, I have set out some more schoolwork for you to continue with at home. Note: As I have said in previous weeks, complete the work as best you can and do not worry if you get stuck in any area. Just skip on to the next thing and do your best in each topic area! That will be enough! FAO Parents - Again I’d like to thank you for your efforts at home with the children during this busy time. FAO Parents - If you wish to submit pictures of your child’s science or art activities for possible display on the school website, you are welcome to submit pictures for these two activities through the school email address ([email protected]). Parental permission is required to email to the school and display such material. Extra Activities are not compulsory, but you may find them helpful for understanding new subject areas and I suggest checking them out as you go along. Virtual School Tour – This week I would recommend completing the science, music and art lessons earlier in the week so that you can complete the Virtual School Tour later in the week, perhaps on Thursday and Friday. The details of the tour are included at the end of this document (History and Geography lessons are substituted with the virtual tours this week). It might be best to split the tour into two days where you can watch maybe two or three videos on the first day of the tour and the remainder on the second day. The tour has videos and questions linked to the International Space Station (ISS) and what the astronauts do while living on the space station. The questions are given so that you will have information to look out for while watching the videos. Don’t worry if you don’t 1 Mr.

Don’t worry if you don’t get all the information for the questions and answers. Its just a fun activity!

The closing date for the “We are Writers” was the 29th May 2020. If possible, try to submit your writing activity as soon as possible if you have not already done so. We have had excellent writing pieces submitted so far from Finn, Ella, Aidan, Zac, Leah, Freya, Eli, Megan, Aaron, Conall, Sophia, Hazel and Ailbhe in 3rd class and from Lorcan, Josh and Jake from 2nd class. Well done, great work and effort!

As mentioned in previous weeks, Aidan sent in a brilliant video showing him completing the ‘Good Egg’ floating science experiment and Megan sent in an excellent picture of herself completing the magnetism experiment. Lorcan from second class also sent in wonderful pictures of himself completing the ‘Water Washer’ (cleaning water experiment) and the ‘Good Egg’ (float or sink) science experiments. Well done, great work and effort!

As mentioned previously, we also received great pictures from Leah and Ruby of their bridge building projects. Well done, great work and effort!

We also received fantastic History/Geography projects/displays about the Vikings in Ireland from Ella in 3rd class and from Lexi in 2nd class. The two of them had lots of information, pictures and maps about the Vikings. Well done, great work and effort!

New PE activities – please note that information for the new ‘Ireland’s Fittest School’ initiative which the school is registered for, and how to access the videos, is available in the Active Sports tab on the school website. The YouTube video exercise sessions are posted online on Tuesday and Thursday, each week.

Monday Maths: This week, we are looking at Capacity Topic 26 which deals with containers and how much liquid each type of container can hold in it. At this stage, at the start of the week, it would be a good idea to ask at home if you could have some containers for the lessons during the week. Remember, if filling containers it would be best to have an older brother or sister, or parent/guardian with you when doing this.

Containers you could use would be; empty 1 litre or 2 litre plastic jug, empty plastic cup, empty plastic bowl, empty plastic bottle, empty plastic milk/juice carton, empty small plastic basin, and also some food colouring for changing the colour of the water which would make it easier to read measurements.

Videos

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EN_z-uUm1Ww This video compares which container holds more or less when comparing the container to another container.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zF3JSnEq7tU This video looks at containers that have the same level of liquids in them, but the containers are made of different shapes so may have different capacities.

Remember that 1,000 millilitre equals 1 litre.

(l) is the unit/symbols used for litres and (ml) is the unit/symbol used for millilitres.

Remember also that 1 millilitre is much smaller than 1 litre.

Also, remember that differently shaped container may hold different amounts of liquid even though they may look like hold the same amount as they are at the same level.

During the week I want you think about the following vocabulary in relation to Capacity and watch out for the words during the week and if you are unsure of what a word means you can ask at home.

Vocabulary for Capacity

Capacity, container, millilitre (ml), litre (l), estimate, measure, liquid

Activity

Look around the home and pick out the places where the use of containers to hold liquids for different reasons/jobs, happens a lot.

English:Spellings: This week there will be 15 spellings. This week the spelling are ‘es’ spellings which are linked to your phonics exercise for Monday. You can learn them over the week and maybe get someone to test you at the end of the week. Use the same method as we normally use in class.

Complete the following exercise based on “es” words.

This week’s story is titled “Fantastic Mr. Fox”. You can spread the reading over a few days and answer the questions on the story afterwards.

Vocabulary: As we did in our ‘team teaching’ classes when we were in school, do a scan of the story first to see if there is any word you may need to check before you start reading the story. You can use a dictionary or, with parents/guardians permission you can check their meaning on the internet.

Maths: Capacity Topic 26

Look back over the video and questions from yesterday’s class.

Hopefully, you have thought of different reasons/jobs around the home that require containers to be filled to different capacities. You could have a watering can for the garden, jug of milk for cereal at breakfast, jug of water for the family to pour from at lunch and dinner, paint tins holding different paint capacities, and drinks bottles that you use during your day at the school or at home.

Today try to think of jobs that people do when they are working that require them to use container of different capacities.

Then try todays question.

WednesdayMaths: Capacity -- Topic 26.

Today, in continuing our learning about capacity we are looking at word problems where you need to read the questions carefully and think about what is being asked before starting to do your answers. You also need to look at the information in the picture to understand how much of each type of liquid is contained in each container and take note of the capacity of each container.

Activity - check in your food press or fridge and see if you can find any containers with litres (l) and millilitres (ml). Make a short list of 4 items in you copy, two of each.

We are going to do some addition with litres (l) and millilitres (ml). The way to complete the addition is the same as when we did additions in Weight where we had to add kilogrammes and grams. Look at the example in the box to refresh your memory.

ThursdayMaths – Capacity (Topic 26)Remember - when giving an addition or subtraction sum which is written across a line such as the ones in todays activities below, it is really important that you stack the sum correctly so that all the units are in a stacked line in a column, all the tens are in a stacked line in a column, all the hundreds are in a stacked line in a column for the millilitres. Then the litres should be in a stacked line in a column. So stack the sums as they were in section B of yesterday’s lesson.
