It is such a HUGE global industry, so you are going to focus on the specific areas of the industry that are linked to what you want to do. Within each area you will explore a wide variety of topics in order to help you understand how it all works! You will also explore the extremely important aspects of professional practice and what it means to be “a professional”, as well as demonstrating a commitment to your career by taking health and safety considerations into account – ensuring you are able to do your job every day! Pathways Into Industry (Year 1)

As a music practitioner, it is important to understand the music industry and how it works, in order to gain employment in that field. It is such a HUGE global industry, so you are going to focus on the specific areas of the industry that are linked to what you want to do. Within each area you will explore a wide variety of topics in order to help you understand how it all works! You will also explore the extremely important aspects of professional practice and what it means to be “a professional”, as well as demonstrating a commitment to your career by taking health and safety considerations into account – ensuring you are able to do your job every day!

During the completion of this project, there will be the following opportunities to develop your literacy and numeracy:

Industry-specific vocabulary (literacy) Professional use of correct spelling and grammar (literacy) Understanding salaries (numeracy) Carrying out and interpreting research (literacy) Understanding numerical representations of sound decibels (numeracy)

Your Tasks

1. Guide to the IndustryYou will learn about the different areas of the music industry, and then focus on three key progression pathways into the industry. You will research the skills that are needed for different jobs and the different ways that you could do this. For this section, you should focus on the areas and job pathways that YOU are currently interested in doing.

2. The Healthy Music PractitionerWhen you work in the music industry, your ability to work to your best ability is crucial to you gaining and keeping yourself in employment. An unhealthy lifestyle or unsafe working practices could impact upon you being able to work, your long-term health, and could also have legal implications. You are going to advise on the best ways to keep safe and to remain healthy and give examples from your own good practice.

3. Professional PracticeThis task will help you to appreciate what “professional” means for a musician. You are going to research and describe some examples of professionalism within different music settings, and then give examples from your own good practice. You will be able to demonstrate some of your own professionalism through the preparation and presentation of your upcoming gig.

4. Equality and Diversity in the Music IndustryYou will create a display resource that represents the diversity of people around you in the music industry, and you will need to demonstrate a positive commitment to ensuring sensitivity to the needs of others (being open minded for example). You will also carry out research into the impact of equality in different professional environments and evidence this through your preparation for the upcoming gig.
