The main responsibilities are to manage technical as well as administrative parts of Research and Development (R & D) of different aspect of Mountain Resources ranging from Flora and Fauna, Conservation, Indigenous Knowledge, Indigenous Property Rights (IPRs) and Eco-tourism for Sustainable Mountain Development for livelihood security, food security and ecological security in the mountain areas of the world. Mr. Bhandari played a key role in organizing the International Conference on Himalayan Biodiversity on February 26-28, 2003 in Kathmandu, Nepal as Organizing Secretary of the Conference where more than 200 scientists, academicians and development professionals from 15 countries participated and shared their experiences during the conference.

August 1, 2005 to March 30, 2006: Consultant/Project Coordinator, Rural Reconstruction, Nepal (RRN)Arun Valley Sustainable Resource Use And Management: A Pilot Demonstration Programme (AVASRUM-PDP) in Selected VDCs of Sankhuwasabha district of Eastern Nepal funded by United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) / Global Environment Facility (GEF) implemented by Rural Reconstruction, Nepal (RRN). The overall objective of the project is to improve the socio-economic status of the poorest users by supporting them on natural resources particularly non-timber forest resources (NTFPs) based income generating programme. Farmers were organized both in the farmers groups (FGs) and community forestry user groups (CFUGs). These organizations were formed, supported, strengthened and reformed with the financial and technical support from RRN Office in Sankhuwasabha (district office and from Kathmandu, Central office), Nepal.

vi. January 01 – May 07, 2004: Research Assistant

Good Garbage: Organic Waste Recycling Practices in Kathmandu for Master’s Dissertation works in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Environmental Management of Michelle A. Huang of Yale University, USA. The working paper has been published in “Vision Journal” on Fri, May 7, 2004.

vii. March 1999 – Jan. 2001: Principal Investigator, Integrating Health and Biodiversity Resources Management with Women’s Empowerment: A Pilot Study in Chitawan and Kaski Districts of Nepal Program funded by the International Development Research Centre / Rural Reconstruction, Nepal, The main job responsibilities were to take care of the project beneficiaries targeted by the project in the project sites, regular supervision, monitoring and reporting of the activities and other jobs as decided and assigned by the senior staffs.

I. PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

a. Consultant of Pokhara University with the following main job responsibilities:

i. To prepare and develop a master plan for the establishment of the “School of Mountain Environment and Natural Resources Management” in Pokhara University, Nepal,

ii. To track and design and develop collaborative research projects for the establishment of the School of the Mountain Environment and Natural resource management, and

iii. To develop international academic curriculum for M. Phil, Master’s and Bachelor’s level in the field of Mountain Biodiversity, Environment and Natural Resource Management in cooperation with related international research universities.

b. Member, Steering Committee of Environmental Mainstreaming in Nepal Initiatives formed from leaders among the government, non-government, academia and private sectors o0f Nepal under the Chairmanship of Joint Secretary of the Ministry of Local Development, Mr. Reshmi Raj Pandey. A three – day workshop on “Environmental Mainstreaming in Nepal” on 20-22 October 2011 in Pokhara has been orgnized by the Ministry of Local Development of the Government of Nepal, in association with the Planning Commission, the Ministry of Environment, the UNDP/UNEP Poverty-Environment Initiative, the Pokhara University and the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED). The main objective of the workshop is to bring together leading Nepali expertise and experience into an ‘Environmental Learning and Leadership Group (ELLG)’ (15-20 people) that helped to review Nepal’s experience to date with environmental mainstreaming - to shape a catalogue of approaches to such mainstreaming activities; and explore the drivers, challenges, and opportunities for mainstreaming, and make recommendations to the government for further action.

c. Member, Resource Mobilization Committee of the Open University of Nepal Initiative (OUNI). The Initiative for Open University of Nepal (OUN) is a confluence of efforts by Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) and the Government of Nepal (GoN) in partnership with CFFN (Canada Foundation for Nepal), and Athabasca University of Canada. The Committee was formed on August 08, 2010. The RMC has already begun to raise funds for OUN initiative and a special directive has been developed for fundraising and fund management. All funds in NRN communities will be collected for OUN Initiative and deposited to a special bank account for OUN setup by NRNA Secretariat; the account will be administered by OUN Steering Committee. As of the time of this writing, a sum exceeding $135,000 pledged as the seed money for starting up the OUN activities has already been collected. The Committee is requesting to all NRN friends to take up the fundraising initiative to help raise the target fund of one million dollar.

Participated in a Regional Workshop on Environmental Mainstreaming for A Green Economy held at Hotel Club Himalaya, Nagarkot, Nepal, 3-5 May 2012: This 3-days’ Regional Workshop was held on ‘Environmental Mainstreaming for a Green Economy’. The workshop, organized by AEMS and IIED, with support from National Planning Commission, Ministry of Local Development and Poverty and Environment Initiatives (PEI)-UNDP/UNEP, focused on how integrating of environmental concerns into decision making and development programmes will help Nepal make the endeavours sustainable and achieve a Green Economy. The participants from UK, Nepal, India, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Canada put some remarkable efforts to make the workshop fruitful.
