Pin the Tail on the What by Audge Podge

Joel was having a great time playing games at Sharlisa's party. He bobbed for apples faster than anyone else did. He successfully whacked the piñata, and a shower of candy rained over the children. He loved winning.

After eating cake, Sharlisa said, "Let us play pin the tail on the donkey. Really, though, we will be sticking the tail on with tape. Mom will not let us use pins because she worries too much. Anyway, who wants to go first?"

"I do," answered Josie, and Sharlisa blindfolded her and spun her around many times. After the dizziness wore off, Josie wandered around the living room and stuck the tail on a fish tank.

When Josie took her blindfold off, she rolled on the floor and laughed until her stomach hurt. Almost all the other children thought it was just as funny. Joel, however, was too busy thinking of ways to win.

"I will go next," Joel volunteered. Sharlisa blindfolded Joel and spun him around. As Joel became less dizzy, he started to walk. After a few minutes, he thought, I must be close! I can feel it!

With confidence, Joel finally stuck the tail to what he thought was the donkey. Then, the other children burst with laughter.

When Joel removed the blindfold, he saw that the tail was stuck to a mirror in Sharlisa's bedroom. "Aw, man!" Joel shouted disappointedly."What is wrong, Joel?" asked Sharlisa. "I missed the donkey," answered Joel."Winning is not everything, Joel," said Sharlisa. "Besides, how much fun would the game be if

everyone put the tail on the donkey?""Yeah," agreed Josie. "The worse a player is at this game, the better!""Well, I guess this game is pretty funny," admitted Joel with a smile. "I guess I win at pinning the

tail in the funniest place! Who would have thought I would stick the tail on a reflection of myself!"

Amazing AntarcticaAntarctica is the coldest continent on Earth. Located on the South Pole and covered in ice, it is actually a

desert because it gets very little precipitation. Many unusual discoveries have been made at this icy wasteland over the years. In 1912, a British explorer discovered a fossil of a prehistoric tree. This proved that a forest once covered Antarctica. In 1986, a new species of dinosaur fossil was discovered. Explorers since then have explored the base camps of the first explorers. A fruitcake, which had been perfectly preserved in the freezing temperatures, was found in one camp. It was "deemed edible," but few people want to eat fresh fruitcake. So, no one was willing to try it.

To Griff’s surprise, Jessica left some of her dresser drawers open. As the cat crawled into a drawer, he said to himself, “Oh, look at these new hiding places. adapted from Not Such Fun as it Seemed

"Isn't it fun, Dolly?" asked Eric. He and his little sister ran along the sea front as fast as their sturdy legs could carry them.

Eric was the jolliest little boy imaginable. But, unfortunately, he was a little bit too fond of mischief. Dolly was generally only too eager to join in her brother's pranks.

Just now, they were running away from the nurse, who was down on the sands with the baby. They waited until her head was turned away, then off they ran.

"We'll go out to the rocks and play at being shipwrecked sailors," Eric went on. "I've got some biscuits in my pocket. I'll dole them out, piece by piece, and pretend we shan't have any more food unless a boat takes us off."

Poor Eric! His play very soon turned real, for he and Dolly waded out to a big rock in a very lonely part of the coast. So interested were they in their game that they never noticed the tide coming in until it had surrounded them. Now, there was no getting back.

They waited on and on, hoping someone would come for them. Every moment, they feared that the sea would cover the rock and that they would be drowned.

It was long past dinner-time. They were wet through and hungry and wretched. At last, a fisherman, who had been sent out to search for them, spied the two lost, little figures, and rescued them.

They went home hand in hand. They were very sad and silent, expecting to get a good scolding. But, instead of that, their mother burst into tears of relief. adapted from The Story of My Lifeby Helen Keller

We walked down the path to the well-house, attracted by the scent of the honeysuckle with which it was covered. Someone was drawing water, and my teacher placed my hand under the spout. As the cool stream gushed over one hand, she spelled into the other the word water, first slowly, then rapidly. I stood still; my whole attention fixed upon the motions of her fingers. Suddenly, I felt a misty awareness as of something forgotten—a thrill of returning thought; and somehow the mystery of language was revealed to me. I knew then that "w-a-t-e-r" meant the wonderful cool something that was flowing over my hand. That living word awakened my soul, gave it light, hope, joy, set it free! There were walls still, it is true, but walls that could in time be broken.

I left the well-house eager to learn. Everything had a name, and each name gave birth to a new thought. As we returned to the house every object which I touched seemed to quiver with life. That was because I saw everything with the strange, new sight that had come to me.

4. How does the event in the well-house help develop the plot of the passage?

A. It describes the anxiety Helen experiences outdoors.B. It highlights Helen's hopeful views about her future.C. It reveals Helen's fear of failing to learn new words.D. It highlights the effort Helen makes to avoid her lessons.

Missing Kitty

The darkly paneled door of the abandoned house creaked in protest as Serena opened it, then peered into the deep darkness before switching on her flashlight. The light's beam cut a thin path of light into the dark room and illuminated old chairs lining the wall before she moved the light to another corner, where she saw a dusty couch. The darkness felt heavy and silent and Serena's footsteps seemed to crunch loudly on the floor.

"Here Kitty!" Serena said in no more than a loud whisper. She listened for the sound of paws on floorboards or an answering "meow," but there was no sound except for her own footsteps.

Serena's meager beam found the opening of an old fireplace, to the left of which stood a high-backed chair. She tiptoed closer so that she could turn her flashlight to the seat of the chair. As two yellow eyes reflected back at her in the light, Serena's heart seemed to stop for a long moment.

"Meow" said the yellow eyes, followed by the sound of loud purring. Serena found herself giggling with relief as she scooped up her lost cat.

"No more running away!" she scolded the purring cat as she made her way back to the warmth of her own home.

5. How does the author's use of the phrase "two yellow eyes reflected back at her" affect the development of the plot?

A. It explains a worry that Serena might have been in the wrong house all along.B. It creates a feeling that something not yet explained is about to happen to Serena.C. It creates a feeling that Serena is not the only one searching for the lost cat.D. It explains that Serena may be looking for the lost cat in the wrong room.

The race was to extend from Bear Mountain to the summit of the third rocky peak to the east. The day was then determined, and the animals separated, returning home to prepare for the race.
