2. What could be your thinking style, analytic or holistic? Let’s read the text to find out

more about it.

2-) Reading

B. Read the following text carefully.

Different Culture Different Thinking

Information processing is another way of

saying “thinking style”. Human beings as individuals

are either oriented toward “independent-self” or

“interdependent-self” based on cultural experiences.

This means that the thinking style is dependent heavily

on culture. There are two major culture headings as

Eastern and Western, under which countries are listed.

Eastern cultures are tended to be holistic thinkers while

Western cultures are considered to be analytic thinkers.

Research suggests that Eastern cultures are more sensitive to

knowledge held by others compared to the Western cultures. This basically means that Eastern

cultures’ priority is on obtaining information. This leads them to pay attention to aspects which

might give the necessary knowledge. Therefore, holistic thinkers focus more on the context or

the field while analytic thinkers focus more on the focal object rather than the context.

Considering these, are you an analytic thinker or a holistic one? In

fact, the answer is quite simple. When you see the picture above (the one in the pre-reading

part) if you pay attention to signs on the left-hand side, Chinese writings on the right hand-side,

the red signboard at the top of the picture, or/ and far houses in the middle of the photo, then

congratulations! You are a holistic thinker. There are context related messages hidden in the

middle of the picture, at the top of the picture an on both left- and right-hand sides of the picture

catching your attention. What happens when you see the picture above if you are an analytic

thinker? Take a closer look at the picture above. In the bottom right-hand corner, there are traffic

cones and a big motorbike. In the bottom left-hand corner, there are two trash cans and a red

door. There is also a sewage cover in the middle of the picture on the ground. In the top right-

hand corner, there is also another rectangular signboard, but it is not working. If you can catch

these before reading this part of the text, then congratulations! You have the tendency to be an

analytic thinker. Yet, do not get excited right away. For, firstly, the information processing,

namely the thinking style can be educated and secondly, the superiority of one thinking style

over the other is still a subject to discuss.

How to describe a photo?

Look at this lovely scene. It is obvious that it is from Paris because. In the middle

of the photo, we have the Eiffel Tower. In the top left-hand corner, we see the bright blue

skies. In the top-right hand corner, we see windows. Probably, there are people living in these

houses. On the left-hand side, we see a carriage, so this is a carriage. It may be carrying people.

It is like the bus of old times. And in the bottom right-hand corner, we see people. They may

be in a rush. Or they may be just enjoying the view of Eiffel Tower.
