Confession of SinsLSB 184

PO almighty God, merciful Father,

CI, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being.

AbsolutionLSB 185

PUpon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.

CAmen.

Old Testament ReadingIsaiah 55:10–13

10“For as the rain and the snow come down from heavenand do not return there but water the earth, making it bring forth and sprout, giving seed to the sower and bread to the eater,11so shall my word be that goes out from my mouth;it shall not return to me empty, but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and shall succeed in the thing for which I sent it.12“For you shall go out in joyand be led forth in peace;the mountains and the hills before youshall break forth into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.13Instead of the thorn shall come up the cypress;instead of the brier shall come up the myrtle;and it shall make a name for the Lord,an everlasting sign that shall not be cut off.”

AThis is the Word of the Lord.

CThanks be to God.

GradualPsalm 83:18, 13

[Let your enemies] know that you alone, whose name is the Lord,*are the Most High over all the earth.O my God, make them like whirling dust,*like chaff before the wind.

Epistle2 Corinthians 11:19—12:9

19For you gladly bear with fools, being wise yourselves! 20For you bear it if someone makes slaves of you, or devours you, or takes advantage of you, or puts on airs, or strikes you in the face. 21To my shame, I must say, we were too weak for that!

But whatever anyone else dares to boast of—I am speaking as a fool—I also dare to boast of that. 22Are they Hebrews? So am I. Are they Israelites? So am I. Are they offspring of Abraham? So am I. 23Are they servants of Christ? I am a better one—I am talking like a madman—with far greater labors, far more imprisonments, with countless beatings, and often near death. 24Five times I received at the hands of the Jews the forty lashes less one. 25Three times I was beaten with rods. Once I was stoned. Three times I was shipwrecked; a night and a day I was adrift at sea; 26on frequent journeys, in danger from rivers, danger from robbers, danger from my own people, danger from Gentiles, danger in the city, danger in the wilderness, danger at sea, danger from false brothers; 27in toil and hardship, through many a sleepless night, in hunger and thirst, often without food, in cold and exposure. 28And, apart from other things, there is the daily pressure on me of my anxiety for all the churches. 29Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is made to fall, and I am not indignant?

30If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness. 31The God and Father of the Lord Jesus, he who is blessed forever, knows that I am not lying. 32At Damascus, the governor under King Aretas was guarding the city of Damascus in order to seize me, 33but I was let down in a basket through a window in the wall and escaped his hands.

1I must go on boasting. Though there is nothing to be gained by it, I will go on to visions and revelations of the Lord. 2I know a man in Christ who fourteen years ago was caught up to the third heaven—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows. 3And I know that this man was caught up into paradise—whether in the body or out of the body I do not know, God knows— 4and he heard things that cannot be told, which man may not utter. 5On behalf of this man I will boast, but on my own behalf I will not boast, except of my weaknesses. 6Though if I should wish to boast, I would not be a fool, for I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain from it, so that no one may think more of me than he sees in me or hears from me. 7So to keep me from being too elated by the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from being too elated. 8Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. 9But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

AThis is the Word of the Lord.

CThanks be to God.

TractPsalm 60:1–2, 5

O God, you have rejected us, broken our defenses;*you have been angry; oh, restore us.You have made the land to quake; you have torn it open;*repair its breaches, for it totters. That your beloved ones may be delivered,*give salvation by your right hand and answer us!

Holy GospelLuke 8:4–15

PThe Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the eighth chapter.

4When a great crowd was gathering and people from town after town came to [Jesus], he said in a parable: 5“A sower went out to sow his seed. And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot, and the birds of the air devoured it. 6And some fell on the rock, and as it grew up, it withered away, because it had no moisture. 7And some fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up with it and choked it. 8And some fell into good soil and grew and yielded a hundredfold.” As he said these things, he called out, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

9And when his disciples asked him what this parable meant, 10he said, “To you it has been given to know the secrets of the kingdom of God, but for others they are in parables, so that ‘seeing they may not see, and hearing they may not understand.’ 11Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12The ones along the path are those who have heard. Then the devil comes and takes away the word from their hearts, so that they may not believe and be saved. 13And the ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a while, and in time of testing fall away. 14And as for what fell among the thorns, they are those who hear, but as they go on their way they are choked by the cares and riches and pleasures of life, and their fruit does not mature. 15As for that in the good soil, they are those who, hearing the word, hold it fast in an honest and good heart, and bear fruit with patience.”

PThis is the Gospel of the Lord.

Nicene Creed

CI believe in one God,

the Father Almighty,

maker of heaven and earth

and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ,

the only-begotten Son of God,

begotten of His Father before all worlds,

God of God, Light of Light,

very God of very God,

begotten, not made,

being of one substance with the Father,

by whom all things were made;

who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven

and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary

and was made man;

and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.

He suffered and was buried.

And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures

and ascended into heaven

and sits at the right hand of the Father.

And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead,

whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the Lord and giver of life,

who proceeds from the Father and the Son,

who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified,

who spoke by the prophets.

And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church,

I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins,

and I look for the resurrection of the dead

and the life T of the world to come. Amen.

(8:00 a.m. service, 10:30 a.m. service continues page 17)

PBeloved in the Lord, our Lord Jesus Christ said to His apostles: “Whoever confesses Me before men, I will also confess before My Father who is in heaven. But whoever denies Me before men, I will also deny before My Father who is in heaven.” Lift up your hearts, therefore, to the God of all grace and joyfully give answer to what I now ask you in the name of the Lord.

PDo you renounce the devil and all his works and all his ways?

PDo you believe in God, the Father Almighty, in Jesus Christ, His only Son our Lord, and in the Holy Spirit?

RYes, I believe in God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

PDo you hold all the prophetic and apostolic Scriptures to be the inspired Word of God and the doctrine of the Evangelical Lutheran Church, drawn from them and confessed in the Small Catechism, to be faithful and true?

RI do.

PDo you intend to hear the Word of God and receive the Lord’s Supper faithfully?

RI do, by the grace of God.

PDo you intend to live according to the Word of God, and in faith, word, and deed to remain true to God, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, even to death?

RI do, by the grace of God.

PDo you intend to continue steadfast in this confession and Church and to suffer all, even death, rather than fall away from it?

RI do, by the grace of God.

PDo you desire to become a member of this congregation?

RI do.

PLet us pray.

Lord God, heavenly Father, we thank and praise You for Your great goodness in bringing these Your son and daughter to the knowledge of Your Son, our Savior, Jesus Christ, and enabling them both with the heart to believe and with the mouth to confess His saving name. Grant that by Your Word and Spirit they may continue steadfast in the one true faith in the fellowship of this congregation as together we await the day when all who have fought the good fight of faith shall receive the crown of righteousness; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

The pastor may extend the right hand of fellowship, greeting each by name. The rite concludes with the following blessing:

+BLESSING OF PARAMENTS+

PBeloved in the Lord: “The Lord reigns; He is robed in majesty; the Lord is robed; He has put on strength as His belt.” “Splendor and majesty are before Him; strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.”

It is therefore fitting that we implore the Lord’s blessing as we clothe the altar of His sanctuary from which He strengthens and preserves us in the true faith.

POur help is in the name of the Lord,

Cwho made heaven and earth.

PThe Lord be with you.

CAnd also with you.

PLet us pray.

O Lord God Almighty, You instructed Moses Your servant to make hangings and fine linens for use in Your tabernacle. We implore You to sanctify these frontals, this fall and this stole for the adornment of Your Church; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

CAmen.

PThe Lord Almighty, the Father, the T Son, and the Holy Spirit, bless these frontals, this fall and this stole.

The Words of Our LordLSB 197

POur Lord Jesus Christ, on the night when He was betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks, He broke it and gave it to the disciples and said: “Take, eat; this is My T body, which is given for you. This do in remembrance of Me.”

In the same way also He took the cup after supper, and when He had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying: “Drink of it, all of you; this cup is the new testament in My T blood, which is shed for you for the forgiveness of sins. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.”

Gifts from God: Luke 8:5 – “And as he sowed, some fell along the path and was trampled underfoot. . .” Know any farmers like this? Who just throw their crop seed wherever? That’s crazy! But God’s ways are not our ways – He is generous beyond compare! He delights in giving. As we are more and more conformed to His image, may we also learn the joy of generosity and giving!

Friendship Sunday: Everyone is encouraged to reach-out to neighbors, family and friends with an invitation to attend Friendship Sunday on February 14th.  Bring them to Worship, Fellowship Time, Education Hour and a Potluck in their honor at 11:30. A great time for us to share and show Jesus' love. There are invitations for you to use if you wish. They are on the "HEART" bordered bulletin board in the Narthex.

Built on the Rock Bible Study:  Join us for our Sunday Morning Bible Study based on the book “Built on the Rock” by Ted Kober. Recent studies in the LCMS show that Bible Study attendance is a strong indicator of a congregation’s health and ability to react to hardship. Please join us to discuss how Jesus is the center of our congregational identity, life together, and conflict resolution. The study will be discussion-based and you do not need to read the book to attend or participate. If you have questions, or would like additional information, please reach out to me in person, by phone, or email. -Pastor Wurdeman

Thank You, from the Family of Emma Samson: We have received a thank you letter from the family of Emma Samson. It is posted on the easel board in the narthex for you to view. Please, if you want to contribute to the remembrance book for the family, submit your written memories to Deb Lafferty in the church office.

Altar Guild: There is a sign up sheet on the easel in the Narthex. Please sign up for the service(s) that work with your schedule. Thank you for your gracious service to the church.

Services: We will be moving our hymnals back into the sanctuary. We will still have the full order of worship available in bulletins for now. Thank you for your patience as we continue with our transitional worship practices. Pastor and the Board of Elders are currently evaluating moving back to a single Sunday service in the coming months. Please reach out to Pastor or your Elder with any thoughts, comments, or questions about worship life.

Soup Suppers in Lent: We are resuming soup suppers during Lent. This will begin with Ash Wednesday on February 17, 2021. The soup suppers will take place at 5:30 pm with a church service at 7:00pm. We are looking for groups, and/or families to help with the meals. There is a sign up for each week on the easel in the narthex. Please join us for soup supper, fellowship and worship.

Cleaning Volunteers: The chairs, doors, bathrooms etc. need to be sanitized after each Sunday service. Please see an Elder or contact the church office if you are willing to stay and assist with this sanitization.

Livestream: Our Sunday Service is livestreamed weekly on our YouTube channel “Good Shepherd Lutheran Church Tomah.”

Hymnals: If you would like to use a Hymnal at home, you can sign one out from church. We also have free devotion pamphlets and Portals of Prayer.
