Chris Humfrey's Wild LifeSunday,1 May 2011

Meet Chris Humfrey, a zoologist who lives with his young family and their really big dog in an idyllic bush haven in country Victoria. But the Humfreys also share their home with a few other pets - more than 2000 and each one of them needs care and attention 24/7. This isn't your average family home. It's a private zoo where human and animal sagas unfold on a daily basis. Follow Chris in this chaotic, animal-crazy series that captures the drama, the danger, the animal antics and the sheer exhilaration of Chris Humfrey's Wild Life. Every day, a new saga unfolds at the zoo.

Chris's zoo looks after the most secretive owl species in Australia - the Masked Owl. And this season, two of them have become first-time parents. But Chris is worried their inexperience means the owls won't be capable of looking after their young. He's going to have to take over the care of the newborn chicks if they are to survive the next few days. Chris and Nicole audition for two new presenter positions. Each of the candidates will face a rigorous test of their scientific knowledge, as well as their performance skills, plus a few surprises. All the current zoo's staff have their favourite animals, and Adam is passionate about anything that flies. He's brought his two tawny frogmouths, Gonzo and Marbles, back to the zoo for a check-up.

Human Planet: Rivers: Friend And FoeSunday,1 May 2011

The majority of the world's population live alongside rivers. For these peoples, the waters bring times of plenty and times of great danger and so these communities have to adapt to the ebb and flow of their environment.

In Yunnan, China, people depend on their river so much that they have become known as the 'mountain sculptors.' When more land is needed for farming, the local shaman will check the condition of the moon and then the whole village will combine to dig into the hillside and alter the course of the local river. In a place without mechanised aid it's an awe-inspiring vision of human power.

For many, the waters have a sacred significance. Every year, in the depths of the dry season, the banks of Lake Antogo are lined with thousands of Dogon men. They stand ready to reap a seasonal bounty in one of the last remaining lakes in the region, a bounty preserved for this one occasion by ancient decree. Equipped only with traditional baskets and bare hands they rush into the sacred lake and empty it of fish, a one-off feast for a people whose diet is millet for the rest of the year.

The Real King's SpeechThursday,5 May 2011

The BAFTA and Oscar-winning film The King's Speech has brought to the fore the inspiring story of King George VI's struggle to overcome his crippling stammer.

Featuring interviews with former patients of therapist Lionel Logue, The Real King's Speech provides insight into the working relationship between Logue and his royal patient as well as looking at the methods and techniques he employed to 'cure' his patients.

King George VI suffered from a debilitating stutter from the age of 8. It made speaking difficult and speaking in public humiliating.

His stutter, and his inherent shyness, affected his relationship with his father...and almost lost him his bride. It made him want to hide from the world. But as a King this was impossible.

George VI was known as 'The reluctant King'. He inherited his throne only because his brother renounced it. Edward VIII abdicated after only 327 days; George was to spend the rest of his life on the throne and in the public eye. George's accession to the throne came at a time when technology and history collided.

George VI was the first King in an age of mass media: through the air waves he could speak to millions of his people live... and in their own homes.

For the first time in history a King not only needed to look the part but sound it too; he represents his country and defines his country - in times of peace and, for George VI, in times of war. But how would this man, so physically ill-equipped it made people question his ability to be a King, succeed?

Atlantis: The EvidenceThursday,5 May 2011

Atlantis: The Evidence uncovers the truth behind the legend and presents compelling new evidence that Plato's story was based on the greatest natural disaster of the ancient world.

In his philosophical dialogues, Timaeus and Critias, Plato writes of an ancient but advanced society of unparalleled wealth that in ‘one grievous day and night’ was ‘swallowed up by the sea and vanished’. Ever since Plato's account, Atlantis has captured people's imagination like no other legendary land. The mystery of its real existence and location has led to dozens of fanciful theories. Now, a growing number of leading scientists agree that Atlantis was more than a figment of Plato's imagination.

Brand new geo-archaeological evidence suggests that Plato's story was inspired by the greatest natural disaster of the ancient world: the eruption of the Thera volcano around 1620 BC. Thera, today also known as Santorini, is an island in the Aegean Sea. At the time of the eruption, it was the trading hub of Europe's first great civilisation - the Minoans. The volcano not only entombed the entire island of Thera but also produced massive tsunamis that flooded nearby Crete.

Featuring interviews with the world's leading experts, this film presents the latest scientific findings on the true scale of the disaster and shows how Thera became the birthplace of the greatest legend of all time.

Collectors: MonopolyFriday,6 May 2011 New Series

Collectors is back! It's their seventh year, and still, passionate collectors step up with collections never seen before. There's no end to them.

Try Monopoly, the board game invented in 1933 by Charles Darrow. Sonia Williams has collected Monopoly for 10 years, and now has 150 sets, all of them different. Her journey began when she spotted an Italian one.

Matthew Reilly is a well known author of thrillers that appeal to teenagers and young adults. He's a best seller and also a die hard collector of sci-fi and action movie memorabilia. His prized bits include a 1.2 metre Han Solo figure (Star Wars) and a rare DeLorean sports sedan from Back to the Future, which he regularly drives.

Ken Wilson, on the other hand, is a relaxed, traditional country collector. He's a dairy farmer, and 10 years ago he gathered up a Coolgardie safe, two cream separators and a milk churn from his father's shed, for old time's sake. He now has 1000-plus objects, all related to milk, all pre-1970 and none of it plastic.

Claudia takes us to the Queensland Museum for a taste of 'Art meets Science'. Frederick Parkhurst Dodd, known as 'the Butterfly Man of Kuranda', collected vast numbers of insects in North Queensland, one of the richest insect precincts on the planet.

Gordon and Adrian are back too, along with all your favourites - the maddening 'Mystery Object', the interactive 'Show and Tell' corner and the weekly auction challenge. If it's collectable, it's bound to be on the show!

A Quiet Word With Rob BrydonSaturday,7 May 2011

In A Quiet Word With Rob Brydon, comedian Tony Martin leads the BAFTA-nominated comic actor and writer on a rambling journey through his remarkable career; from presenting products on the Home Shopping Network, and having his only line cut from his film debut with Sean Connery, to being 'discovered' by Steve Coogan, who produced the early successes Human Remains and Marion and Geoff.

Brydon discusses his collaborations with Coogan and director Michael Winterbottom, from Tristram Shandy to the upcoming The Trip; reveals the origins of Gavin and Stacey's Uncle Bryn; speaks of the difficulty of playing 'himself'; and blows the lid off the 'Small Man Trapped in a Box'. A thoroughly entertaining Quiet Word with the man once voted the '47th Sexiest Man in Wales'.

The New InventorsHosted by James O'Loghlin, The New Inventors presents a clean energy special, discovering the cutting edge technology that will power our future. Deciding the winner of these three inventions are: materials engineer Veena Sahajwalla, science broadcaster Bernie Hobbs, and Australian of the Year Simon McKeon. Inventions featured on the program:

IMPLUX - by inventor Varan Sureshan from NSW

One of the problems facing renewable energy is the transmission of the energy from the source to wherever it's needed. Transmission lines are not terribly efficient and a lot of the energy simply is lost along the way. Renewable energy would be much more efficient if power could be generated at the place where it is going to be used, but we can't exactly put a standard wind turbine on the nearest skyscraper.

IMPLUX is an omni-directional, vertical wind power device. The device uses a rotor in a wind capturing shroud. The device incorporates horizontal fixed blades which capture, streamline and accelerate wind from any direction into a central chamber where a turbine rotor generates electricity. IMPLUX is more efficient, lower maintenance, quieter and contains the rotor more safely than other horizontal wind turbines.

PLASMONIC LIGHT TRAP - by inventor Dr Kylie Catchpole from ACT

Solar cells are becoming thinner and thinner in order to reduce materials costs. But as they get thinner, they also absorb light less effectively. Standard solar cells use a pyramid structure on the surface to trap light within the cell, but this doesn't work for the new thin film solar cells because the pyramid structures are too big.

Plasmonic Light Trap deposits nanoparticles of silver on the surface of a thin-film cell, boosting the cell’s efficiency. The metal particles act like tiny antennas, collecting light and directing it into the solar cell. The light can then bounce back and forth inside the solar cells, which increases the chance that it will be absorbed. The increase in efficiency achieved through this invention could help make solar power competitive with fossil fuels.

BLUEWAVE - by inventor Dr Tom Denniss from NSW

Wave energy is the most concentrated form of renewable energy, with the energy in ocean movements capable of supplying the whole world's electricity needs 5000 times over.

blueWAVE is arguably the first wave energy system in the world to demonstrate true commercial viability. In fact, it has already been connected to the NSW electricity grid. As water moves through a column in the water it compresses air inside, pushing it through a turbine that produces electricity. As the wave recedes air is sucked back through the turbine, which continues spinning in the same direction regardless of airflow, dramatically increasing the amount of energy produced. Once fully operational blueWAVE could provide as much as 30% of Australia’s energy needs.

CatalystBeyond Petrol

Demand for oil is starting to outstrip supplies and unless alternatives can be found, oil supply could soon fail to meet our needs. One way to offset demand is by switching from our beloved gas-guzzling automobiles to electric cars. Governments are encouraging development and car manufacturers are taking different approaches to the challenges of batteries, and how to balance achievable range against available power. Jonica Newby travels to the US motor city, Detroit, and gets behind the wheels of the front running electric cars of today and tomorrow.

Bowel Cancer

Around 80 Australians die each week from bowel cancer. Fortunately, it can be treated successfully if detected in its early stages, but currently less than 40 per cent of bowel cancers are detected early. A test kit distributed as part of a national screening program has helped improve early detection rates, but will the program be continued? Dr Maryanne Demasi reports on the present threat to end the program and the call from doctors and the Cancer Council to not only continue the program but to expand it.

Touring Down Under

Welcome aboard this elementary tour of the alimentary canal. As you peer out the windows of our viewing pod, observe the abundant native flora and how the nutrients and water are absorbed through the walls of the small intestine and colon.

Jellyfish Vortex

The upside down jelly fish Cassiopea, spends most of its time with its 'legs' in the air and the 'top' of its bell resting on the seafloor. Researchers from the University of North Carolina injected dye into the sand below the jellyfish and demonstrated how the bell's pulse creates eddies that bring nutrients to the frilly feeding arms.

Walking Straight

It’s true that people who get lost in the desert without a compass can end up walking around in circles - but why? Graham Phillips and Ruben Meerman get together to demonstrate the phenomenon and try to solve the puzzle.
