Personal Effects by Alan Counihan, WHAT

Date: 26 JanuaryTime: 5.15 pmVenue: WHAT Centre To Book: [email protected]

Alan Counihan presents his ground-breaking project Personal Effects in the WHAT Centre, Waterford.

WHAT (the Waterford Healing Arts Trust) starts its 2016 programme of public events with a presentation by artist and writer Alan Counihan of Personal Effects of his ground-breaking, artistic exploration of institutional care for the mentally ill based on the belongings of dead / discharged patients on Tuesday, 26 January 2016 in the WHAT Centre, Waterford.

The Personal Effects Project is an ongoing work by Alan Counihan that began as an exploration of the personal effects of dead or discharged patients of Grangegorman Mental Hospital which were discovered in an attic of that institution in 2010. The fruit of that research and exploration was exhibited as a multi-media installation that in 2014 was first shown at the Long Stores of St Brendan's Hospital, Grangegorman, Dublin.

Page 10: €¦  · Web viewA full-time post, the successful applicant will have experienced reception skills, be a good communicator with strong verbal and written skills, with a pleasant

In the words of Alan Counihan: 'Following two years of research and development, this installation was created in response not only to the possessions discovered within the hospital complex but also to their possessors who were in turn possessed by the institution for the duration of their care. The work also responds to the official archival records of the Richmond Asylum, latterly St Brendan's Hospital, and to the history of institutional care for the mentally ill in Ireland as a whole.'

This project has now expanded to include the legacy of five other asylums in the south-east of Ireland through the support of a 2015 Artlinks Bursary Award. Alan has received several other substantial grants and awards including, twice, the Pollock-Krasner Foundation Award. A radio documentary, Ghosts of Grangegorman, based on the Personal Effects Project was broadcast on RTE Radio in September 2015. A working artist since 1990 much of Alan Counihan's early work was created in the public realm in the USA, U.K. and Ireland. In works that engage with place, communities and the resonance of human habitation, he creates site-specific responses to public spaces or landscapes. He also maintains a studio-based practice creating works for exhibitions and installations in gallery and non-gallery contexts in Ireland and abroad.

This event will begin at 5.15pm on Tuesday 26 January 2016 in the WHAT Centre in the grounds of University Hospital Waterford. The talk will be preceded by a wine reception.

Admission: Free to WHAT members. €10 for non-members. Membership costs €10 per annum. See http://www.waterfordhealingarts.com/get-involved/. Phone 051 842664 or email [email protected] to book your place.

To Book for the Public Talk with Todo Por La Praxis:https://www.eventbrite.ie/e/extending-architecture-public-talk-todo-por-la-praxis-tickets-20758798124  The Arts Council has announced the introduction of training for cultural practitioners with an interest in programming, exploring and sharing the cultural and artistic value of architecture with the public. Leading international practitioners, Todo Por La Praxis (Madrid), Kate Goodwin (London), and Estudio Teddy Cruz + Forman (San Diego - Tijuana) will provide interactive training sessions in Dublin, Galway and Cork in 2016 as part of Extending Architecture training initiative. They will share their expertise and insights with training in how to programme, present, collaborate, mediate and work in new ways in architecture.

Recognising that currently in many architectural practices, arts centres, galleries, festivals, civic venues and public spaces around the world, dynamic practitioners are seeking to broaden out the field of architecture beyond the design and construction of buildings alone. This training will reflect these developments and is in line with Arts Council policy and commitment to architecture. These examples of ways to engage the public with architectural practices and the presentation of architecture open out a sense of architecture as a platform for collective conversations about the kind of world we live in today.

During these sessions participants will have a chance to explore new attitudes, views and opinions on architecture and the built environment internationally and locally.

For details on Training Session 2 with Kate Goodwin (London) and Training Session 3 with Estudio Teddy Cruz + Forman (San Diego - Tijuana), please visit www.artscouncil.ie and www.create-ireland.ie.

Artist in the Community Scheme Bursary Award: Collaborative Arts and Architecture

Tara Kennedy has been awarded the Arts Council Artist in the Community Scheme Bursary Award 2015: Collaborative Arts and Architecture.

Tara Kennedy is an artist and architect with a long term interest in the critical potential of design. Tara has proposed to use the Bursary to further research and assess her practice. Tara is particularly interested in design as constant collaboration, and in how architecture can encourage new ways of probing existing situations. Kennedy is particularly interested in investigating the

Page 14: €¦  · Web viewA full-time post, the successful applicant will have experienced reception skills, be a good communicator with strong verbal and written skills, with a pleasant

question of as she puts it, 'the way that we practice in the context of an engaged and collaborative reading of architecture'. During an initial research phase, she will also explore researching and demonstrating ways of working that address barriers and limitations to collaborative approaches to architecture within communities and within the architecture profession.

In 2008 Tara co-founded Culturstruction, a collaborative architecture and design practice with Jo Anne Butler working in the overlaps of design, architecture, art and spatial practices. She was also a founder and curator of Commonage, a non-profit organisation creating a new kind of space for contemporary art and architecture practice within a community context. Tara works in practice at John McLaughlin Architects and is a studio tutor and part-time lecturer at Cork Centre for Architectural Education as well as pursuing independent research in the area of engaged architecture.

Tara is interested in design as constant collaboration, and in how architecture can encourage new ways of probing existing situations. Current work includes research with The Mothership Project exploring experience of architecture in shared, cultural and co-working spaces for parents with our young children, questioning how the design of these places might better support radical and active citizenship. Previous collaborative projects have been produced with The Irish Architecture Foundation, Dublin City Council, The Education and Community Department at the Irish Museum of Modern Art, Mermaid Arts Centre, Bray, the Abhainn Ri Festival of Participation and Inclusion in Callan, the Fondazione Antonio Ratti, Como, PLACE, Belfast, and the Royal Society of Ulster Architects.

Tara holds a Master of Architecture (2013) and BSc in Architecture (2010) from UCD. Prior to this she received a first class honours BFA (Sculpture) from NCAD (2005).

The Arts Council Artist in the Community Scheme Bursary Award 2015 aims to support individual professional architects / artists working in the area of engaged and/or collaborative architecture. The Arts Council has provided this €10,000 bursary award as part of the Artist in the Community Scheme, which is managed by Create. Create in partnership with Irish Architecture Foundation hosted two information and discussion events in THE LAB, Dublin and the National Sculpture Factory, Cork about the award.

The purpose of the Bursary Award is to support and nurture professional arts practice and it is specifically aimed at an architect / arts practitioner who has a track record of working collaboratively. The Bursary Award of €10,000 provides the selected architect /artist with time and resources to carry out research and to reflect on practice. More particularly, the Bursary allows the architect / artist to consider key questions associated with creating architecture using collaborative methodologies.

It is expected that Tara Kennedy will share the learning arising from the Bursary with the wider architectural community and collaborative arts sector.

2016 Deadlines: (Round 1) Monday 14 March | (Round 2) Monday 27 June

CAPP Workshop

Date: 26-30 January

Hablarenarte, our Spanish partners in CAPP, will host a workshop, 'The Urban as Collective Space', 26-30 January with the artist Dos Jotas to be held in partnership with Centro Huarte. Dos Jotas creates interventions in public space, which interrupt or subvert our preconceived urban notions and perceptions.

See here for more details (in Spanish).
