Monday Spelling recap: Have a go at practising these words using the following strategies: Rainbow writing: write the word once in one colour, choose another colour and go over it again. Repeat this with as many different colours as you want/can. Rainbow writing 2: Write each letter of a chosen word in a different colour. Scrabble letters: If you have a scrabble game you could use the letters from there. If not, write each letter of the word on separate bits of paper. Mix up the letters from a chosen word and now try and put the word back together to spell it correctly. Now try and beat the clock. Set yourself a timer: maybe 30 seconds or 1 minute. How many of these words can you remember and write in that time? Check you have spelt them correctly and for every correctly spelt word, give yourself a point. Repeat this and see if you can improve on your first go. Tuesday This week you will be researching Sir Francis Drake. In preparation for next week when you will be writing a biography about him. A biography is an account of someone’s life written by someone else (you). I would like you to have a go at practising these time adverbial spellings, which you will need in your biography writing. First do the word search and then have a go at looking at the word, saying the word, covering the word, then writing the word, finally check to see if you’ve spelt it correctly. Do this for each word.

Wednesday and Thursday

I would like you to be researching a man called Sir Francis Drake. You will need this research ready for next week when you will be writing a biography about him. Look at the biography features below.

You need to be prepared to tell your reader about his life (Birth – Death). In this you must find out about a battle, which happened at sea, which he was involved in. Find out why this battle happened and what happened in the battle. The rest is over to you. I have included a list of question ideas should you need them to help you but you don’t have to stick to these! If you find an area of his life more interesting than another then follow up on that interest!

Make notes of your findings and try and keep these in chronological (time) order. This will help you when you come to write his biography up next week.

This is the list which you will be self-assessing against so make sure you cover these aspects in your research:

What is an ellipsis?

It’s important to use a range of punctuation in a piece of writing. Please remember all the work you have been doing on punctuation.

In this text I would like you to have a go at using 1 or 2 sentences which include an ellipsis. Please don’t use more than that: otherwise it really will use its effect on the reader.

Prepare 1 or 2 sentences which you could use in your writing next week about Sir Francis Drake, using an ellipsis in each.
