Torrential rains have lashed Pune division of Maharashtra, comprising Pune, Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur and Solapur districts, flooding most of the regions and cutting of large number of villages. The severe flood situation has resulted into 27 deaths and forced over 2 lakh people to seek shelter in evacuation points (Deepak Mhaisekar, Divisional Commissioner, Pune Division on 8 August). Of these five districts, Kolhapur, Sangli and Satara are the worst-affected with hundreds of villages still inaccessible due to flooding. National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Army and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) have swung into rescue operations. Incessant rains in several parts across the state in the last two weeks have resulted in massive waterlogging and flood-like situation which is expected to remain grim for some more days. Some of important updates on the flood in Western Maharashtra;

Since most of the areas are cut off and the transportation links are snapped, army and the administration are the only agencies reaching to people now. Though flood has hit both urban and rural areas equally, villages have suffered more because of the nature of the housing. Thousands of families, which have been evacuated to safer places, will face difficulties when they return to their homes which were submerged. They will need food supplies and other essential supplies to restart their lives. During the initial assessment, communities reported about urgent and emerging needs for humanitarian assistance such as Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), food grain and blanket. Government agencies are active in the flood-hit areas, but they are now focusing rescue and activities. Thousands of families require food grain, fresh water and sanitation materials for prevent communicable diseases.

Proposed Interventions

1. School kit distribution: Children are the most affected when a natural disaster strikes. They are affected mentally, physically and socially which also affects their psychological health. UWBe would partner with corporates to contribute to their wellbeing by getting them back to schools through providing school kits.

2. School, Anganwadi and primary health centres refurbishment: Refurbishing the schools and Anganawadis (early childhood learning centres), Primary health centres (hospitals) affected by the floods to help children get back to education and to bring the lives of peoples to normalcy.

3. Livelihood support: floods will have immediate impact on the livelihood of the people through crop loss, livestock loss, merchandise loss for the small time vendors. To help them to get back to normalcy, we would like to create livelihood opportunities like Cattle rearing, petty shops, seeds for forming etc.
