Seeing just over 24 months in a mix of demi-muids, 300-liter Hog Heads and barrique, it has a sensational bouquet of spring flowers, black raspberries, black cherries, violets, licorice and camphor. Reminding me of a great vintage of Raymond Usseglio's Cuvée Imperiale, this full-bodied, elegant Grenache is impeccably balanced, has a full and layered mid-palate (which is missing from just about every other Grenache made in California), and sweet tannin on the finish. It reminded me of a lighter vintage of Château Rayas, which is a lighter-styled Châteauneuf du Pape even in a powerful vintage. The light ruby-hued cuvée Moriah offers up intense notes of sweet black cherries intertwined with herbal nuances. As the wine sits in the glass, tell-tale notes of raspberries (which I often associate with Rayas) also emerge. If tasted blind, this different, intriguing effort would undoubtedly be thought to be a French southern Rhône rather than a Sonoma County product. "The 1989 Château L'Eglise-Clinet continues to shine at 27 years of age and this was certainly a better example than several that I have tasted in the last two or three years. It has a very complex nose, this bottle one of the most backward that I have encountered: red berry fruit, black truffle, crushed violets and sage aromas, a hint of warm tar emerging with time. The palate is extremely well balanced, still quite youthful and structured a Pomerol that you have to learn to love (although trust me, it is worth the effort). This example suggests that it still has many years ahead, such is its substance and length. This was always a brilliant wine from Denis Durantou, a Pomerol that wears its heart on its sleeve. "The 2017 Clos de la Roche Grand Cru comes from vines planted in 1933 and 1954, though remarkably, Sébastien told me that one parcel was a fruit orchard as late as 1964. The classy bouquet of mineral-rich red berry fruit, graphite and undergrowth aromas reveals just a hint of morels in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, a very elegant, refined style and a linear finish. Understated and classy."(92-94pts VM)

"The 2016 Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru comes from a 0.65-hectare parcel next to those of Anne Gros. Matured in 50% new oak, it has quite a healthy, deep ruby color. The bouquet had just a little reduction, but underneath there is plenty of tightly knit blackberry, cranberry and redcurrant fruit, chalk and light incense aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannin, vibrant red and black fruit with just a faint licorice edge, not enormously long in the mouth but it fans out with style."(93-95pts)
