2 Welcome to Kiddie Launch Learning Centre. This Handbook contains important information regarding our programs. It is very important that you read this handbook and keep it handy as long as your child is enrolled in the center. It will answer many of the questions you have about Kiddie Launch. Philosophy and Goals

Kiddie Launch was established to provide quality, loving care for children 6 weeks to 11 years of age. The staff recognizes the importance of balanced growth, so they provide opportunities for mental, physical and emotional growth through a variety of creative experiences. Children are encouraged to learn and explore at their own speed in areas that interest them. We are pleased that you have chosen to include us in the growth and development of your children.

License

Kiddie Launch is licensed to operate legally by Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. The License is posted in the Director’s office. A toll-free telephone number is listed on the facility’s license and may be used to report a suspected violation of the law or administrative rules. The licensing law and rules governing child care are available for review at the facility upon request. The center’s licensing record, compliance and complaint reports are located in the Director’s office. The Food license is posted in the kitchen. Food and fire service reports are available upon request.

Admissions

A child is considered to be enrolled in the center only after paperwork is returned and the registration fee has been received; the administrator confirms the day child will be starting. This includes basic enrollment and health information. Any changes to this information must be communicated to the office immediately so that current information is always on file and must be updated on a yearly basis. This is for the safety of your child. A medical form signed by a physician or certified nurse practitioner is required to be submitted within 30 days of admission. This medical must be updated every 12 months.

Hours and Days of Operation

The center will be in operation Monday through Friday 6:30am to 6:00pm. The center will close to observe the following holidays: Martin Luther King Jr. Day, President’s Day, Memorial Day, Fourth of July, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day and the day after, Christmas Day, and New Year’s Day. Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve (we may choose to close early or be closed depending on the date of the holidays), Full tuition is due for the weeks in which holidays fall, as the staff is given paid holidays. If Christmas and New Year’s fall on the weekend, we will be closed the week day closest to the holiday.* Holidays are celebrated in our classrooms. If you have any issues with this, please speak with the Director as we believe in open communication.

Tuition/Fees and Payment Policy

Tuition/Fees are due weekly or in advance. Tuition fees are due Wednesday mornings of the week child care is provided. If payment is not received by Wednesday morning of the week of care the account is considered delinquent. In the event of illness, full payment is required, except for extended illness. An extended illness is an illness that keeps a child out of the center for at least 5 consecutive calendar weekdays. Half payment will be approved with a note from the child’s doctor stating the child was sick and not able to attend. All Checks are made payable to: Kiddie Launch. Tuition should be placed in the provided mailbox in the schoolage room. You are paying for your spot regardless of usage. School Age children have additional fees when school is out of session.

*Current rate sheets are posted in the school age room and office. Our tax ID is available upon request.

3 Vacations: The center must be notified on the prescribed vacation form two weeks in advance. Each full-time child is granted one calendar week of vacation. The normal rate will be charged for all other vacation weeks. *Note: Full time is any child enrolled as 5-day daycare or 5-day before and after school age care. Vacation weeks do not carry over from year to year. You cannot use a vacation week as part of your two weeks’ notice. Holidays: Full tuition is due for any week including holidays. Staff receive these days as paid holidays.

Application Fee: A non-refundable family application fee of $25.00 is charged. A re-enrollment fee $25.00 is charged for any child withdrawn for more than 2 weeks.

Delinquent Accounts/Returned Checks: A fee of $15.00 will be charged to the account if payment is not received by (Wednesday morning) the designated day for all payments to have been made. A $30.00 fee is charged for all returned unpaid checks. The parent will be required to pay with cash or money order until all account balances are settled.

Late Pick-up Charges: A phone call is requested if a parent realizes that circumstances beyond their control will delay pick-up. This is important as many children fear they have been forgotten when parents do not arrive at their usual time. A late fee of $2.00 per minute per child is charged after 6:00pm. This is payable, in cash, to the teacher with your child when you arrive.

Assessments: We implement Ages to Stages as our screening tool. We use the Creative Curriculum assessments and conduct assessments annually; newly enrolled children will be assessed within 30 days of starting at the center. The assessments will then be given annually after the initial 30-day assessment. We do not share this information with anyone outside of the center.

Withdrawals Parents wishing to withdraw their child are required to give a 2-week written notice, using the prescribed form. You will be responsible to pay for 2 full weeks if proper notice is not given. This will allow your child time to gather their belongings and say goodbye to their teacher and friends. A vacation week may not be used as part of the two weeks’ notice. Inclement Weather On rare occasions, it may be necessary to close our center due to poor weather conditions. We will make every effort to open our doors at normal time. Kiddie Launch will be closed for a level 3 snow emergency. Full tuition is due during those weeks unless it is an extended closure. Staff will be paid.

Custody Agreements: You must provide the center with court papers indicating who has permission to pick up the child, if custody issues are involved with your child. The center may not deny a parent access to their child without proper documentation.

Parent Involvement: Just as we expect the children and staff members to behave in a reasonable manner, we also expect our parents to be good role models and treat their own children, other children, and the staff with respect.

No parent shall speak to a child, not their own, about any issues, they should inform the staff members and allow the staff members to discuss problems with the other child and child’s parent.

Parents will not yell at or curse at any child or staff member.

Parents who cannot control their tempers and attitude will be asked to leave and not return.

4 Staff Safety Policy

Staff have completed fingerprints and background checks before being permitted with the children Staff take ODJFS orientation training Staff get a medical statement stating they are fit for duty Staff take 1st aide, Communicable Disease, Infant/Child CPR and Child Abuse Recognition and

prevention classes that are updated as required Staff are required to take Step Up to Quality classes to remain employed Staff will release children only to persons on the release form provided by the parents. If an emergency

arises, the parent must provide a written note or phone call giving the person permission to anyone to pick up their child. Staff will check ID’s of any one they do not recognize.

The children’s safety is our priority! Staff will not release children to anyone including parents who appear under the influence of drugs or alcohol. Emergency contacts will be called to transport the child home. Police will be notified if necessary.

All staff members are mandated reports of suspected child abuse. If a staff member has suspicions that a child is being abuse or neglected, they legally MUST make a report with the local Children’s Services agency.

Guidance Policy

Kiddie Launch Staff believe that helping the child learn self-control is very important. Our hope is that each child will learn self-discipline through careful guidance. Your child will be treated with respect; they in return learn to respect the teachers and their friends. Our expectations will be kept within the child’s capabilities and the child will be made aware of these expectations. Positive reinforcement (commenting on children doing the “right” thing) and positive redirection (removing the child and giving them an appropriate activity) will be used. A child may be asked to sit for a short period of time to give the child a chance to regain control if they are having a difficult time.

Time outs will be age appropriate in length and done within the classroom. Children who are a danger to themselves or others will be sent home. When a child can’t conform to Kiddie Launch’s code of conduct, they will be disenrolled. Staff will not impose punishment for failure to eat, sleep or toileting accidents. Specifications of Rule 22 apply to all employees of the center.

Supervision Policy

A major responsibility of the staff is to ensure the health and safety of each child entrusted in our care. Staff members are alert to the safety needs of their children. Staff will anticipate potential hazards, and take necessary preventative measure.

Staff will supervise children at all times including the bathroom and naptime. If the child becomes ill, they may be isolated in a section of the room not in use, but within sight and hearing of a staff member. Arrival/Departure

Parents are required to bring their children into the building and make sure they are with their assigned group/room or a staff member.

Any special messages, medications, special pick-up notes, etc. are to be given to the teacher. Children may not be dropped off at the entrance of the building or be sent inside alone. Parents are responsible for the supervision of their child when they are on KLLC premises. Staff will document arrival and departure for each child on the attendance sheet.

Kiddie Launch and Kiddie Launch Staff Members will not transport children in emergency situations. Only Parents or EMS will transport if a child requires transportation, the emergency squad and the parent will be contacted.

All parents of enrolled children MUST grant consent for emergency transportation for treatment. Decline of permission for emergency squad will result denial for enrollment.

The center has devised several procedures to follow in the event that an emergency would occur while a child is in the center’s care:

1. In the event of fire or tornado, staff will follow the written instructions posted in each classroom, describing emergency evacuation routes, and the procedures to be followed to assure that children arrive at the designated spot. In order to prepare children for the unlikely need to evacuate, the center conducts monthly fire drills and periodic tornado drills.

2. Should we need to evacuate due to fire, weather conditions, the loss of power, heat or water to the center, our emergency destination will be Wright View Church of the Nazarene-- 1612 Superior Ave, Fairborn, OH 45324. Parents will be called to come or send someone to pick their child up.

3. A sign will be posted on the doors of the center indicating that we have evacuated and the location where you can pick up your child. Parents will be contacted to come to pick up their child as soon as possible. If parents cannot be reached, we will contact the emergency contacts as listed on your child’s enrollment information.

4. There is always one staff member present that has received training in First Aid, Communicable

Disease and CPR. In case of a minor accident/injury staff will administer basic first aid, TLC and fill out an incident/injury report. If the injury would be more serious, first aid would be administered and the parents would be contacted immediately to assist in deciding an appropriate course of action. If any injury is life threatening, the EMS will be contacted, parents will be notified, and a staff member will accompany the child to the hospital with available health records.

5. An incident/injury report will be completed and given to the person picking up the child on the day of the incident/injury if any of the following occur: the child has an illness, incident or injury which requires first aid; the child receives a bump or blow to the head; the child has to be transported by emergency squad; or an unusual or unexpected event occurs which jeopardizes the safety of children or staff, such as, a child leaving the center unattended. If a child requires emergency transportation, the report shall be available within 24 hours after the incident occurs. The licensing department will be notified, verbally, within 24 hours and a copy of the incident report will be sent, via fax or mail within 3 business days.

6. Plan for supervision of all children in the event of an emergency, serious incident, injury or illness. Children must be supervised at all times.

7. Children in the group must be kept in sight and hearing until additional staff are available to take control of children. One staff member will stay with ill or injured child until the parent arrives. If 911 is called, the staff member will go with the child until parent arrives.

* Staff will follow the Medical, Dental and General Emergency Plan posted in each room.

Parents who choose not to immunize their child may do so – we recommend all children receive their vaccinations in a timely manner. Kiddie Launch provides children with a clean and healthy environment. We realize that children become ill from time to time. If this is your child’s first group experience, it is possible that they may experience more frequent illnesses at the beginning before their immune system becomes more active.

We observe all children as they enter the program to quickly assess their general health. We ask that you not bring a sick child to the center. They will be sent home! Please also plan ahead and have a backup care plan in place if you are not able to take time off from work/school.

Children who are too ill to participate in all the daily activities need to stay home or will be sent home.

A child with any of the following symptoms will be immediately isolated and discharged to the parent or emergency contact:

Temperature of 100 degrees F - in combination with any other signs of illness Diarrhea (more than three abnormally loose stools within a 24-hour period) Severe coughing (causing the child to become red in the face or to make a barking or whooping sound) Difficult or rapid breathing Yellowish skin or eyes Redness of eye or eyelid, thick and purulent (pus) discharge, matted eyelashes, burning, itching or eye

pain Untreated skin patches, unusually dark urine or gray or white stools Stiff neck with an elevated temperature Evidence of untreated lice, scabies, or other parasites Vomiting more than once or when accompanied by any other sign of illness Sore throat or difficulty swallowing

Any child demonstrating signs of illness listed above will be isolated and carefully observed for symptoms. The parents will be notified. Anytime a child is isolated they will be kept within sight and hearing of a staff member. The cot and any linen used will be washed and disinfected before being used again.

Parents will be notified by a sign on the door if children have been exposed to a communicable illness.

Children will be readmitted to the center after at least 24 hours of being free of fever and other symptoms. If they are not symptom free, a doctor’s note will be required stating that the child is not contagious.

Medications The center will administer medications to a child only after the parent completes a Request for Medication Form. All proper sections must be completed and the medication handed to the teacher each day. Medications will be stored in a designated area inaccessible to children.

Medication will NOT be stored in a child’s cubbies or book bag.

Prescription medications must be in their original container and administered in accordance to the instructions on the label. If parents request any different dosage or uses, a physician must provide written instructions on the Request for Medication Form.

Over-the-counter medications Over the counter medications must also be administered by the instructions on the label will not be administered for more than 3 days without instructions from a physician. Diaper cream and topical ointment will not be administered for more than 14 days.

School Age Kindergarten – 5th Grade 1-18 2-36 Ratios for toddlers and preschoolers may be doubled for 2 hours at naptime as long as all children are resting quietly on their cots and enough staff are in the building to meet the regular required staff/child ratio if there is an emergency.

Maximum group size is defined by the number of children in one group that may be cared for at any time. Limitations do not include naptime, lunch time, outdoor play, or special activities.

Transitioning: Before a child can move on to the next older room, they must transition. Transitions are decided on the following areas of development: physical, social, gross motor, cognitive, language, self-help skills as well as age of the child. The parents are consulted and all their questions and concerns are discussed.

Transitions are made gradually and according to the child’s needs. Transitions are completed on a 2-week basis for infants, 1 week for toddlers and 3 days for pre-school, pre-K and school age. Parents will be notified at least one week in advance of the transition beginning. Time is a crucial factor in coping with change. Children will not be rushed.

We will be respectful and considerate of parent’s needs and concerns during this process.

Meals and Snacks: Kiddie Launch provides a morning snack at 9:00am, hot lunch at 11:00/11:30, and afternoon snack at 3:00pm each day. Each snack will contain at least two food groups. Our hot lunches each day will meet the State requirements. Packed lunches (school age only) must meet State Requirements.State requirements rule 5101: 2-12-39

8 blanket. The blanket from home brings them comfort. You will need to take it home weekly for washing. A child who is too restless to sleep after being given opportunity to sleep or rest quietly will be permitted, when possible, to sit in the office and do quiet activities such as coloring, puzzles or reading. Every child will be put down for a nap as required by ODJFS Rules.

Special Needs: All children are welcome at Kiddie Launch; and we encourage parents to bring their children to spend time in the room before they start. All children are given a trial period to see that they can integrate into the program we want to know they are safe and happy in our care. We do evaluate children with special needs on a child-by-child basis to ensure that we can meet the needs of every child assigned to the room.

Parent Participation/Concerns: Parents are encouraged to participate whenever possible in the activities at the center.

Parents have unlimited access to all areas of the building used for the child care during operation.

Parents may wish to attend field trips, class parties and special luncheons or simply stop in to join in the daily fun.

Teachers are available to discuss a child’s progress or needs at any time. However, due to staff responsibilities and schedules, parents are asked to make appointments with staff when it is necessary to engage in lengthy conversations. Teachers want to be able to focus on you and your child at these times.

If parents or employees have any concerns or questions at any time, it is recommended that the following chain of command be used until an answer or solution is found: 1. Child’s teacher2. Office Administrator 3. Owner

Please feel free to bring concerns up when they occur. Often, they can be addressed when they are little problems, before they grow into bigger problems. We realize that you trust us with your little ones and we want our relationship to be a good one.

Outdoor Play: Research has shown that children stay healthier when they have daily outdoor play. Based on this information and state requirements, outdoor play will be included in our program on a daily basis. We will limit the amount of time outside when the temperature is very warm or very cold. We even try to get our infants outside on our back porch for fresh air on nice days.

Children will not be taken outside if the wind chill drops below 20 degrees or heat index rises above 95 degrees. If the situation requires it, we will also adjust outdoor time due to rain, threatening weather, ozone warnings, etc.

Please send your child in with proper clothing so they may be comfortable and safe whenever we are outside. This includes snow pants, hats, mittens, scarves and boots in the winter times.

Gym shoes and socks must be worn for playing on the playground equipment. Due to state ratios all children must go out with their class. Children can’t be left in another classroom or office. If a child cannot participate in their group’s activities, they will not be permitted to be at KL

Infant Only Information

Parents must bring diapers and wipes and changes of clothes. State of Ohio requires that EVERY BOTTLE be labeled with NAME AND DATE PREPARED!! NO hair beads, barrettes, hair ties* or dangly earrings. They can come out of their hair and are

considered a serious choking hazard. The earrings can be accidently caught and be torn out of the ears.

https://www.brightstarlabels.com/daycare-labels has labels that last and are waterproof. Only the dates would need to be changed daily.

Breastfeeding/Pumping Mothers are supported at the center. We currently have two locations that accommodate pumping and breastfeeding mothers. The back porch off Toddler/Infant room has an adult swivel chair outside that is private when the weather is nice out.

The other location is up toward the front of the building in the front School-Age room (This room is only occupied from 3:30-4:30 daily). There is an adult swivel chair in the room that can be used for breastfeeding and/or pumping you may also use the front porch if you’d like.

Self-Care: Preschool children should be able to handle most of their own self care needs, getting dressed, washing hands, putting on their own shoes, coats, hats and gloves. They should need little assistance. We encourage them to ask for help, when needed, rather than an adult automatically attending to their needs.

If possible, in the summer we like to allow the children to “swim” this will include sprinklers and small wading pools (less than 24 inches deep). Parents will be required to sign a written permission slips prior to children engaging in this type of water play. Permission will include child’s birthday; whether they are a swimmer or not, parent’s signature and date. Come prepared for the pool on swim days, although no one is forced to swim, they may wish to participate when all their friends are. Swim shoes are recommended as the parking lot can get hot.

Gym shoes are required for the children to play on the playground equipment. This is a safety issue with climbing and running. We also use mulch that can get between toes of sandals or flip flops

Daily Schedules Preschool/Daycare

The children’s daily schedule is flexible enough to provide adaptability when necessary but structured enough to provide predictability for the children. We want them to view their school as a safe and comforting place, where they know what to expect and when to expect it. A typical Preschooler’s day would include:

13 Our program will operate a full day program for school-agers when school is closed for vacations, weather delays and school cancellations.

Children are required to pack a lunch. A nominal fee will be charged for a packed lunch should school close after the child has arrived at the center for the day.

Morning snack is 9:00 am and Afternoon is when they return from school.

Extra hour fees are charged according to the program used.

School-Age Transportation of Children: Kiddie Launch will provide transportation for school-age children going to/from school. This transportation is done on busses owned by the center and a staff member with first aid, communicable disease and CPR training will be present in the bus. A signed permission form is required.

We follow the procedures set forth by Fairborn Primary, Fairborn Intermediate, Beavercreek City Schools when dropping off and picking up students each day.

Summer Program: We will post information regarding field trips prior to the field trip. All permission slips must be signed by parent or guardian before the child may go on the trip. Parents are given a monthly calendar with planned field trips and one is posted in the school-age room

Field trip transportation is done on the KLLC buses with a seatbelt for each child.

A cell phone will be taken on field trips and routine trips.

Before departing the center, a count will be taken of all the children and they will be marked on a separate attendance sheet, specifically created for the trip. Upon arrival at the destination, another count will be taken to assure that all of the children have safely arrived. This process will be repeated upon leaving the destination and returning to the center. During the course of field trips and routine trips, each staff member will have specific children that they are responsible for supervising. Before any child participates in either a routine trip or field trip, the center will obtain written permission from the parents or guardian.

Employees trained in first aid, communicable disease and CPR will go on all trips. Driving records are checked before staff are allowed to drive any center-owned vehicle. For field trips children will wear name tags/bracelets with center’s name, address and phone number. First Aid kit and children’s emergency transportation authorization & health records go on all trips.

For school-age children to swim in bodies of water 2 or more feet in depth they must have written permission from parents signed dated and indicating whether the child is a swimmer or a non-swimmer.

The approved swimming areas are sub divided by ropes with floats and the depths are marked (we use the 2-4-foot area for the non-swimmers).

At all times when the children are in the water, staff members are with them in the pool or sitting on the edge at no time is a child left alone in the water without a staff member present.

Medication: School-agers only will be permitted to maintain control of their inhalers. Parents must sign a release form stating that they are permitting their child to have access at all times to the inhaler. The child must keep the inhaler on his person at all times, it may not be stored in a cubbies or book bag. Anytime the
