Second Class Work – Week beginning 15 / 06 / 2020 Hello everyone, Some great news first. Ms. Quinlan recently welcomed her beautiful baby boy Daniel into the world. I’m sure you’ll join me in wishing them all the best. Every year in Ballygarrett N.S. we hold and Actives Schools Week so we thought that this year should be no different so we are holding an ‘Active Homes Week’ instead. The academic work will be minimal and hopefully the weather will be good to help all students to get out and be active every day this week. Below are some ideas to help with you active week. I understand that equipment will vary in each house so please just use whatever you have available. Feel free to use these ideas, your own ideas or those of other teachers in other classes so that siblings can work together. Have fun and I would love to see some of your activities. Second Class Work – Week beginning 15 / 06 / 2020

Hello everyone,

Some great news first.

Writing

Report Writing or Procedural writing.

I will give you two choices in writing this week.

You can pretend that you are a journalist and have to write a report about a match/activity for a newspaper. (This could be anything active not just sport e.g. a dance competition or a sponsored walk)OrYou can write down the steps needed to perform a specific skill. E.g. how to perform a type of roll in gymnastics or how to dribble a basketball.

Oral I have attached some ‘name 3 sports cards’. These cards will name an aspect of a sport e.g. ‘uses a ball’ and you have to then think of 3 sports that use balls.

Chicks

Thankfully three beautiful chicks have hatched. The first 2 came out of their shells easily but the final chick needed a little help. They are now eating well and being kept warm under a light. Now it’s time to get thinking on their names, any suggestions are appreciated.

Physical exercise

We have decided to use the Sligo Education centre Website to help with our Active Homes Week this week. We will have 6 themes with 1 activity in each theme. On the Website they include 3 activities for each theme and you acre more than welcome to try all of the activities. The activities I have chosen are level 2 and are aimed at 2nd – 4th class. The website has everything from and equipment list, a goody bad list and even a music play list to make it as much like sports week as possible.

Running

Rock, Paper, Scissors tag

Description of ActivityArrange pupils in pairs, standing one metre apart and facing each other. All pairs line up along a centre line with a safety line positioned twenty metres behind both sets of pupils. Each pair begins by performing a rock-paper-scissors routine. A rock is a closed fist, paper is a flat hand, and scissors are the index and middle fingers ina cutting position. Paper always covers rock, rock breaks scissors, and scissors cutpaper. To determine a winner, pupils count to three and form a rock, paper, or scissors. The winning pupil then chases their partner toward their safety line, attempting to tag them before they are safe. Line up again and repeat the activity.

Kick to Score

Description of ActivityDraw or stick target areas at various heights on a wall. Points should be placed in the centre of each target from one to five. Arrange pupils in groups of three or four. Pupils are given a score to achieve, e.g. ten. Groups must hit the targets on the wall to achieve that score. Pupils could try to score a penalty on Mom, Dad or a big brother or sister.

Tennis ball Challenge

Pupils work in pairs, one throwing and the other counting. The aim is to throw the ball against the wall and catch it again as many times as possible in thirty seconds. For safety reasons ensure that groups are spaced at least three metres apart.

Arrange children in pairs (horse and jockey) and invite them to find their own space in an open playing area. On a signal the children carry out the following movements: • Under the bridge - the jockey crawls under the horse's body. • Long way to town - the jockey jumps clockwise in a circle around the horse. • Short way to town - the jockey jumps an-clockwise around the horse. • Trade your horse - all jockeys find a new partner. Ensure partners regularly switch roles.
