Volcanoes

1) An earthquake is an intense destructive shaking of Earth´s surface.

2) They are caused by weird movements of the Earth's tectonic plates.

3)The different types of earthquakes are:

-Tectonic

-volcanic

-collapse

-explosion

4) We calculate their importance by the intense of the movements that they made. There is a science called ¨seismology¨ in charge of measuring to calculate the importance of the earthquakes using a scale.

5) A volcanic eruption is a type of explosive eruption that ejects new lava fragments. Is a emission of material precedent from the inside of the Earth, like lava, ash and toxic gases, through volcanoes.

6) Volcanoes are formed when magma from inside the Earth’s superior layers works its way to the surface. At the surface, it erupts to form lava flows and ash deposits.

7) There are five types of eruptions depending the magma

Hydrothermal eruption:

An eruption driven by heat in a hydrothermal system. Hydrothermal eruptions spray around rocks and can produce ash, but do not include magma. These are typically very small eruptions.

Phreatic eruption:

Page 4: €¦ · Web view10) A tsunami is caused by earthquakes or volcanoes that move the earth in the depths of the sea. This movement is called earth tremor. When a tremor slide land under

An eruption driven by the heat from magma interacting with water. The water can be from groundwater, hydrothermal systems, water streams, a lake or the sea. Phreatic eruptions pulverise around the rocks and can produce ash, but do not include new magma.

Phreatomagmatic eruptionAn eruption resulting from the interaction of new magma or lava with water and can be very explosive. The water can be from groundwater, hydrothermal systems, water streams, a lake or the sea.

Vulcanian Eruption

A Vulcanian eruption is a short, violent, relatively small explosion of viscous magma

Strombolian and Hawaiian eruptionsThese are the least violent types of explosive eruptions. Hawaiian eruptions have fire fountains and lava flows. Strombolian eruptions have explosions causing a shower of lava fragments.

8)

Surface: the outside part or uppermost layer of something.

Ash: the powdery residue of matter that remains after burning.

9)A tsunami is a large ocean wave usually. Tsunamis are NOT tidal waves. Tidal waves are caused by the forces of the moon, sun, and planets upon the tides, as well as the wind as it moves over the water. With typical waves, water flows in circles, but with a tsunami, water flows straight.

10) A tsunami is caused by earthquakes or volcanoes that move the earth in the depths of the sea. This movement is called earth tremor. When a tremor slide land under the sea, the surface water rises and becomes a hump. This wave begins to move across the surface.

11) In 2011 happened an earthquake In Japan

-Different disasters: earthquake and tsunami

FLOODS

1) What is a flood?

2) How can flood originate?

3) Look for information about flood in 1927 in U.S.A

4) What states were affected by the flood?

5) Which river flooded?

6) Mark the river on a map

7) Mark the affected state

8) How many people died during the flood?

9) What happened with many of the people that lost their houses and their jobs?

10) Find representation of these events in pop culture

11) Look for information about more recent floods affecting the same area

12) What did the government do after the 1927 flood?

13) What did the government do during the Katrina flood?

14) What is a levee?

Floods

1) It is a natural event or occurrence where a piece of land (or area) that is usually dry land, suddenly gets submerged under water

Page 7: €¦ · Web view10) A tsunami is caused by earthquakes or volcanoes that move the earth in the depths of the sea. This movement is called earth tremor. When a tremor slide land under

2)A flood occurs when water inundates land that's normally dry, which can happen in a multitude of ways. Excessive rain, a ruptured dam or levee, rapid melting of snow or ice, or even an unfortunately placed beaver dam can overwhelm a river

3) The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 was the most destructive river flood in the history of the United States, with 27,000 square miles

4)   The states affected were the states of Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana, most in the Mississippi Delta.

5) The river affected was Mississippi Delta river.

6)

people affected by the flood lived in the states of Arkansas, Mississippi, and Louisiana, most in the Mississippi Delta

Page 8: €¦ · Web view10) A tsunami is caused by earthquakes or volcanoes that move the earth in the depths of the sea. This movement is called earth tremor. When a tremor slide land under

8) During the flood  around 250 people died.

9) Thousands of people had to left their homes when entire cities were under water.

10) Increasing tide: the great Mississippi flood of 1927 and how America changed.

11) In other areas throughout the Midwest and the South. The floods have caused roads to be blocked.

12) , the federal government built the world's longest system of levees and flood ways.

13) The US government could face lawsuits for thousands of floods caused by Hurricane Katrina

14) A levee is an artificial or natural wall that prevents water from leaving its course.

Wins and storms

1) What is a hurricane?

2) Where do hurricanes from?

3) How do hurricanes form?

4) What is a typhoon?

5) Where do typhoons form?

6) How do typhoons form?

7) What is a cyclone?

8) Where do cyclones form?

9) How do cyclones form?

10) What differences have you found between the three?

11) What is a tornado?

12) Where do tornados form?

13) How do tornados form?

14) What is the main difference with the others.

Wins and storms

1) hurricanes is an intense tropical storm with powerful winds and heavy rain and can also create tornadoes, high waves and lots of flooding. It can be up to 600 miles across and have strong winds and upward at speeds of 75 to 200 mph.

Page 11: €¦ · Web view10) A tsunami is caused by earthquakes or volcanoes that move the earth in the depths of the sea. This movement is called earth tremor. When a tremor slide land under

2) The hurricanes usually form in tropical parts of the world like the southern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and in the eastern Pacific Ocean.

3) Hurricanes are part of the accumulation of thunderstorms that move over warm ocean waters. When the warm air of the storm and the ocean surface combine, a swirling lift is made. This generates low pressure on the surface of the ocean.

4) typhoon is a large storm system that occur in ocean waters having a circular or spiral system of violent winds and heavy rain, typically hundreds of kilometres or thousands in diameter.

5) As typhoons are formed in the oceans or seas, the waters must be at elevated temperatures

6) A typhoon forms when winds blow into areas of the ocean where the water is warm. These winds collect moisture and rise, while colder air moves in below

7) formed by intense torrential winds and storms. A cyclone is a natural phenomenon.

Page 12: €¦ · Web view10) A tsunami is caused by earthquakes or volcanoes that move the earth in the depths of the sea. This movement is called earth tremor. When a tremor slide land under

8) Cyclones form in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean, which is the ocean that borders Northeast Australia

9) When warm moist air over the water rises, it is replaced by cooler air. The cooler air will then warm and start to rise. This cycle causes huge storm clouds to form

10)The only difference between a hurricane, a cyclone, and a typhoon is the location where the storm occurs. In the Atlantic and Northeast Pacific, the term “hurricane” is used. The same type of disturbance in the Northwest Pacific is called a “typhoon” and “cyclones” occur in the South Pacific and Indian Ocean

11)A tornado is a rapidly rotating column of air that is in contact with both the surface of the Earth and a cloud . The windstorm is often referred to as a twister , whirlwind or cyclone.

12)Most tornadoes are found in the great plains of the central United states . An ideal environment for the formation of severe thunderstorms. In this area ,known as tornado Alley , storms are caused when dry cold air moving south from Canada meets warm moist air traveling north from Gulf of Mexico.

13) Most tornadoes form from thunderstorms you need warm , moist air from the gulf of Mexico and col , dry air from Canada. When these two air masses

meet, they create instability in the atmosphere. Most strong and violent tornadoes form within this area of strong rotation.

14)Hurricanes, cyclones, and typhoons are the same meteorological phenomenon, but with a different name, depending on where they are located. In general, they can be called tropical cyclones
