2. Read the text about the period of Mongol invasion in the Russian lands. Find and underline in the text words from ex. 1.

The Mongol Invasion, which started in XIII century, was not just an ordinary raid of nomad tribes. It lasted about 240 years and a whole new empire appeared, the Mongol Empire. Almost all Russian lands were included into it and Russian princes had to pay money regularly.

The Golden Horde was a whole new Empire stretching from the Danube lands till the Western Siberia on the other end, and it still was only a part of the mighty Mongol Empire. Mongols were nomads, that is, they did not settle down to live in one place, but moved around, although the culture of the peoples they have conquered surely influenced them too.

The Mongol Conquest for many decades stopped crafts and arts development in Russia: it was hard for people to simply survive.

The time of wars came to the Russian lands. To fight the Mongols back, Russian princes had to unite together to be able to confront the enemies.

In 1380 Moscow Prince Dmitry Donskoy led the Russian army in Kulikov battle, which ended with the defeat of the enemy’s army. The legend says that the battle started very symbolically, when the Russian warrior-monk Peresvet, and the Tatar soldier Chelubey fought, both died. It was a great battle, and such a famous person as Sergy Radonezhsky took part in it.

But this victory did not mean the end of the power of the Golden Horde over the Russian lands. Only in 1480 the prince of Moscow Ivan III refused to pay tribute to the Mongols. A new, unified Russian state is gradually beginning to emerge around Moscow.3. Answer the questions:a) When did the conquest start?b) What was the new large empire called?
