Elk River area food Co-op receives grantSubmitted Article
Food Co-op Initiative announcedthe award of 12 Seed Grants to newretail food co-ops organizing acrossthe United States. The public inter-est in food co-ops is at an all-timehigh, reports FCI Executive DirectorStuart Reid. By owning and control-ling their own cooperative store, communities are able to ensure stableaccess to healthy food, provide mean-ingful jobs, and support local produc-ers. Food co-ops can become both aneconomic anchor and a social hub forthe community. Award winners wereselected based on the strength of theirleadership, quality of business plan-ning, potential for successful opera-tions, and potential impact made by
the grant funds. The awards will be used to help
pay for professional business devel-opment, market studies, and member-ship recruitment. Co-op organizerswill raise matching funds in theircommunity and collaborate withFood Co-op Initiative throughouttheir development process. This is avery select group, said Reid. Weare working with over 140 communi-ties that are actively engaged in start-ing a food co-op. Although we wereonly able to provide funding to a lim-ited number of co-ops, FCI providesfree resources, training and advice toall food co-ops using a web-based ap-proach which allows easy access ondemand and provides personalizedservices through mentoring, live
training events and a lot of e-mail.This marks the 6th round of Food
Co-op Initiative Seed Grants sincethe program began in 2005. In thattime, $560,000 in startup support hasbeen awarded to 68 food co-ops.Newly opened cooperative groceriesare expected to generate over $500million in revenue over the next fiveyears.
Food Co-op Initiative is a non-profit 501(c)3 created to encourageand support new food co-op develop-ment. The Seed Grant program ismade possible through a USDA RuralCooperative Development Grant andmajor funding from the BloomingPrairie Foundation, National Cooper-ative Bank, National Co+op Grocers, and the food co-op community.
Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge thanks dedicated Adopt-A-Road volunteersSubmitted Article
Adopt-a-Road partici-pants volunteer for Sher-burne National WildlifeRefuge (NWR) and work toclean roadsides that borderand bisect refuge land. Thisspring, from April to June, approximately six individ-uals, three families, andseven groups, such as boyand girl scouts and 4-Hgroups, volunteered toclean countless miles ofroads. Sherburne NWRwould like to thank all ofthe Adopt-a-Road volun-teers for their commitment, hard work, and willingnessto help.
The Adopt-a-Roadprogram is not only a clean-up operation; it works to
educate both the passersbyand the Adopt-a-Road vol-unteers about the responsi-bility of land stewardship. As one Adopt-a Road vol-unteer commented thisspring, I noticed whitetaildeer and snakes movingalong the section of roadwhere I was walking. If Iwas just driving by theseareas, I would have missedseeing the animals and Iwould have missed pickingup the trash that is interfer-ing with their habitat. Each time a volunteer isspotted walking down aroadside, someone, some-where is reminded of ourshared responsibility tocare for the land. The factthat Adopt-a-Road volun-teers not only share this
sense of responsibility, butalso put into action is whatmakes them so special, val-ued and appreciated.
Sherburne NationalWildlife Refuge is sothankful for the efforts ofour dedicated Adopt-a-Road volunteers to keepour roadsides and habitatsclean and wildlife friendly.Sherburne NWR wouldalso like to thank RepublicServices for donating adumpster for our Adopt-a-Road program to use dur-ing the clean-up.
Sherburne Refuge ismanaged by the U.S. Fish& Wildlife Service, and islocated near the cities ofPrinceton, Zimmerman, and St. Cloud, in centralMinnesota. Website:
