We’ve included the following suggested weekly lesson sequence for your convenience. Monday Start your week by watching The Character Tree video. Before watching: If you have time for a quick discussion, you could ask your students what they think they already know about the character trait of bravery and have them share with a partner or call on a couple students to share with the whole class. After watching: If you have time after the video, have students share examples of bravery from the video. To extend their concept of bravery you could ask them to think of a specific way that they could show this trait in the coming day or week. Tuesday Follow up the video with the foldable book. Read as a whole class, or have students read independently. These books would make a nice home-school connection, or add them to student’s book boxes or bags and keep them at school. Depending on how much time you have, the cut and paste comprehension page would be a good fit as a subsequent activity. Wednesday Use our template to create a class book that showcases ways each child has seen and experienced bravery in their own life. After each student has completed their page, assemble the book and read it to the class. Adding the completed book to your classroom library, or other shared space in your classroom, would be a great way to encourage your students to revisit and read the book on their own. We’ve included the following suggested weekly lesson sequence for your convenience.

Monday

Start your week by watching The Character Tree video. • Before watching: If you have time for a quick discussion, you could

Ruby coming to school that they

didn’t send their children. Ruby was in

a class all by herself with just her

teacher, Mrs. Henry. It was very

lonely, but Ruby stayed brave and

never missed a day of school.

Eventually, the other children came

to school and Ruby learned and played

When Ruby Bridges was a little girl all

of the schools where she lived were

segregated. That means black

children and white children weren’t

allowed to go to school together.

These rules were unfair and they

were finally changed. When Ruby was

in first grade she went to a new

school and was the first black child

Some of the white parents at

Ruby’s school didn’t want their

children to go to school with Ruby.

They stood in front of the school

with mean signs and shouted at her.

Ruby had federal marshals come

with her to protect her and keep her

safe. Ruby was never mean back. She

may have been scared, but she

Ruby Bridges showed bravery by becoming the first black child to go to

her school.
