How do patterns in the atmosphere
affect our weather?
Weather
The state of the atmosphere at a certain time and place (includes temperature,
moisture, wind and pressure)..
Climate
Typical weather patterns for a specific region of earth.
Atmosphere
The gaseous matter that surrounds earth.
Troposphere
The layer of the atmosphere closest to earth’s surface. The layer where weather occurs.
Air pressure
The weight of the air pressing down on earth.
Cold Front
The leading section of a cold air mass moving against and replacing a warm air mass.
Warm front
The leading section of a warm air mass that rises above a cold air mass.
Precipitation
Any form of water falling to earth’s surface
Humidity
A measure of the amount of water vapor in the air.
Windward
On the side exposed to the wind
Leeward
On the side protected from the wind.
Tornado
A rotating column of air. Usually accompanied by a funnel shaped cloud.
Vortex
Spiral movement within a liquid or gas.
Hurricane
A rotating air mass originating over water that creates a large storm and high winds.
Wind
The movement of air from a specific direction.
Stationary Front
The boundary between two different air masses that aren’t moving.
Poleward
Movement towards the pole of a planet.
Stratus
A low altitude, horizontal, grey cloud formation.
Cirrus
A high altitude, narrow, white, fleecy cloud formation.
Cumulus
A dense, white, fluffy, flat-based cloud formation.
