MARCH 2017 CONNECTING PEOPLE WHO CARE WITH CAUSES THAT MATTER

We’re Doing It Again! Give Local St. Joseph County ReturnsAfter our $6.77 million success in 2015, we’re doing it again—with more charities and an even bigger matching pool.

On May 5, 2015, the Community Foundation launched St. Joseph County’s first-ever 24-hour “giving day.” Fifty-three local charities participated in Give Local St. Joseph County, working hard to raise money and capture a share of the matching pool.

When the event ended at midnight, the results were mind-boggling: $6.77 million had been raised in some 5,500 gifts.

The success of the Give Local St. Joseph County “exceeded everyone’s expectations,” says Rose Meissner, president of the Community Foundation. “The generosity of our community is truly exceptional.”

Now, two years after that stunning success, we’re doing it again: The Community Foundation will host our second Give Local St. Joseph County on Tuesday, May 9, 2017, in celebration of our 25th Anniversary. This year, the pool of matching funds is even bigger: $2.4 million.

Once again, Give Local St. Joseph County is designed to support local charities now and from now on. How? By passing through 75% of net dollars raised for each charity to support current programming, and by placing the other 25%—plus generous matching funds—into each

Judd Leighton: A Special Relationship

Add Tuesday, May 9, 2017, to your calendar and visit www.GiveLocalSJC.org to see a list of the 67 participating charities. It’s going to be a BIG day with a BIG impact!

Local businessman and philanthropist Judd Leighton had a special relationship with the Community Foundation. A member of our founding Board, Leighton was one of the Foundation’s earliest champions. In honor of this relationship and in recognition of the Foundation’s 25th Anniversary, the Judd Leighton Foundation made a $1 million challenge gift to help jump-start the Give Local St. Joseph County matching pool.

A small group of committed donors

stepped up to meet the Judd Leighton Foundation’s challenge—Cressy Foundation; Frank Family Fund; Jon & Sonja Laidig Foundation; Leighton-Oare Foundation, in memory of Judd and Mary Morris Leighton; Mary Alice, Regina & George A. Resnik Fund; Dot and Dar Wiekamp, Dennis J. Schwartz, and Julie and Jim Schwartz; Marjorie H. Wilson Charitable Trust Fund; and Anonymous. Together, these generous donors have built the matching pool to $2.4 million to benefit our local charities.

Give by check, made payable to Community Foundation of St. Joseph County. You can benefit multiple charities with a single check—just be sure to list the charities and the amounts you want each to receive. The Community Foundation must receive your check no later than May 9, 2017, so plan to mail it early.

Give by credit card, online. Make a gift at our secure website GiveLocalSJC.org on May 9, 2017, using your credit or debit card. You can also make a credit card gift by phone: WNDU-TV will host a televised phone bank on May 9.

This past February, the Community Foundation lost a wonderful friend and founding Board member—Fred Crowe, co-founder of the nationally-recognized accounting firm Crowe Horwath. Through their donor-advised fund with the Community Foundation, Fred and his wife Rosemary provided support to many of their favorite local charities, focusing on education, economic development, social services, and their Catholic faith.

A South Bend native, Fred graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1949 with a degree in accounting. Shortly after that, he and his colleagues Mendel Piser and Clete Chizek founded the accounting firm Crowe Chizek, now known as Crowe Horwath. Today, the firm has thousands of employees throughout the country.
