MOBILE, THE METATREND OF THE DECADE

A staggering four billion people are buying new smartphones every two years. Moreover, it is forecasted that by 2017 the number of devices will exceed the global population of 8 billion and by 2020 the number of devices that are powered by USB will outnumber people 2 to 1. This rise in the mobile device usage is “the Metatrend of the Decade” according to Peter Diamandis, founder of XPRIZE and Singularity University.

Going a step further, two very important cultural trends have emerged over the past decade: the pursuit of the Quantified Self and the rise of the POV cameras.

The Quantified Self is a movement to incorporate technology into data acquisition on aspects of a person's daily life in terms of inputs (e.g. food consumed, quality of surrounding air), states (e.g. mood, arousal, blood oxygen levels), and performance (mental and physical). The result has been a surge in new wearable technologies with sensors to collect all data including smartwatches and head mounted displays.

Then with the convergence of fast and available broadband, increasingly cheaper data storage coupled with the rise in social networks like Youtube, Facebook and Instagram, the foundation was laid for point-of-view cameras to flourish, and that’s just what GoPro took advantage of. GoPro, with a current market cap of $6B, ushered in the desire and acceptance of video-capturing nearly everything in one’s personal life and then sharing it.

Mobile tech has infiltrated us, our bodies, our cars, houses, businesses, and nearly every aspect of our lives. (How many of us don't let our mobile phones get out of our sight? How often are they more than a meter or two from our grasp?)

As amazing as all of these personable and wearable mobile devices are, they are also obsolete without power to run them. These pivotal trends in mobile device usage have sparked one of the next biggest waves and opportunities of our time: wearable power.

For this reason, the brand to become top-of-mind for wearable power—the category king—stands to a�ect billions of people and devices.

INSPIRED BY RACING TO THE TOP

In 1999, Blake Fuller was trying to set a new record at the annual “race to the clouds”. At 18 years old, he had his sights on winning the oldest race in the United States, the Pike Peak Hill Climb in Colorado Springs. Not only did Blake walk away with the “Rookie of the Year” award, but his interest was piqued to make his car lighter–specifically the heavy 45 lbs. battery in his car. Seeing how the car battery industry had not been innovated in some 40 years, Blake and a small team decided they were going to change that. After many iterations of the prototype, Blake and his team finally had their breakthrough. They produced an 11 lbs. battery that could replace its 45 lbs predecessor –nearly 5 times lighter! Blake and his team soon capitalized on their inventions by founding Braille Battery.

With a rich history dominating motorsports from NASCAR to Formula1, Braille Battery would go on to be recognized as inventing the Automotive Lithium starting battery and developing the IndyCar Spec Battery as well as other specialty batteries for the defense, medical and aerospace markets. With international patents pending on over 20 core technologies, Blake has not only brought superior performing products to market, but also has simplified the manufacturing process through exclusive designs. In 2014, Braille Battery was acquired by a group specializing in the material science: Graphene.

THE ORIGIN OF GO PUCK

Back in 2009, when traveling for Business, Blake was seeking a solution for charging his new iPhone while on the go, but was unable to find any portable charger solutions that were adequate to last all day, much less anything com-fortable enough to take with you. In 2010 when developing the spec Lithium battery for the to-be-debuted 2012 IndyCar, Blake realized that technology could be adapted to make a lightweight portable charger for mobile devices which could be wearable and provide su�cient capacity to charge your devices multiple times in a day. Later in 2011 initial design concepts were developed and testing began to change the way portable charging was accomplished.

Teamed up with Anil Paryana, the patent holder for the 2012 Car of the Year “Tesla - Model S”, Blake launched two versions of the GO PUCK product, the “3x” and the “5x”, each deriving their names from the amount of times the portable device could rapid charge the standard sized smartphone of the time.

GO PUCK made its public debut at the 2013 SXSW show attracting press from all over the world. The response and market-acceptance of the GO PUCK story and product line further fortified the true marketplace potential for a category leading product.

IN SEARCH OF POWER

As Moore's Law illustrates, processors double in power every 18 months. While this is great for computing compatibilities and performance, the downside has been that the battery technology, due to chemical constraints, has not been able to keep up with these exponential advances. Coined as the “muscle car era of mobile devices” by Blake Fuller, mobile devices are demanding more power than their battery storage compartments can deliver. Likened to the automotive fuel-crisis the world felt in the 1970’s, we are in a “battery-fuel crisis”.

When we understand that mobile devices in circulation will outnumber the human population and also understand that the mobile devices in themselves demand more power than is self-contained, we can appreciate the utilization of external sources of power. And a step further, we gladly accept external sources of power that are easily integratable into our lifestyles.

As power has become the figurative life-blood of devices that constantly needs replenishing, the demand is always present for convenient charging, especially in places where wall outlets are scarce. When you imagine airports, sporting arenas, music venues, amusement parks, mountain resorts, convention centers, pop-up festivals, public transportation, etc., these are all locations where the power and cables are not readily available yet interestingly, these are locations that lend themselves to you wanting to use your personal devices even more so (to talk, text, take phones/video, share, entertain, work, etc).

While it's great that some building management groups have caught on to the mobile power needs in these venues by providing charging and locker stations, their methodology is still flawed. Why? Because we want freedom. We want mobility. And if we’re at a special event, we want our phones to capture the experience and to connect and coordinate with our friends and family.

So at GO PUCK, we ask for a better way, a better charging station—and that is when the Freedom Station was born.

The Freedom Station is the ultimate solution allowing for rental use of GO PUCKs to give you mobile freedom. In addition, Freedom Stations are still designed to give you free stationary charging and also charging lockers for those who still have not accepted mobile freedom as a choice.

From a retail standpoint, the Freedom Station becomes GO PUCK’s P.O.P. display, allowing for product shelves. Equipped with touch screen monitors, the Freedom Stations play video footage catered to the viewer, sharing the GO PUCK brand and lifestyle at an automated but experiential and visceral level.

Location, location, location, becomes the next battlefield for GO PUCK. Owning the locations is vital to increasing brand awareness, generating sales from rentals and products sold, growing market share, obtaining customer and product data, and ultimately providing a platform for future mobile freedom advancements.
