Thank you so much for signing up to Candlelighters Christmas Cracker campaign! Christmas

is a time for family and friends to come together and make special memories. For some

families in Yorkshire, childhood cancer will be a part of this time together. At Candlelighters,

we want to help these families, providing the support that they need most so that they can

focus on spending quality time together this Christmas.

To provide this support, we need your help. It costs approximately £125,000 to deliver the

services and funding we provide throughout December and we are totally reliant on voluntary

donations. So we are calling on you, to join our extended Candlelighters family, to pull together

with your family and friends and have a cracking Christmas to help raise funds for families

affected by childhood cancer.

We want you to have a great time supporting us and we know there’s plenty of fun to be had

when planning a festive fundraiser. Whether you are planning on celebrating Christmas with

your friends, or getting together with work colleagues, the ideas, information and handy tips in

this pack will help you make the most of your time together fundraising this Christmas.

Our fundraising team would love to hear how you will support us, and we are here to help you

every step of the way. If you have any questions about fundraising for Candlelighters, then

please get in touch with our fundraising team by calling 0113 322 9283 or emailing

[email protected]

Candlelighters simply wouldn’t be here without your support. However much you

raise, your contribution can make a huge difference to the lives of Yorkshire families.

Many of our supporters raise funds through an imaginative range of festive-themed events

and initiatives. When it comes to raising money and the ways to do so, the possibilities are

endless. If you are looking for inspiration, here are some of our favourite festive fundraising

ideas:

Santa’s helpers – auction off your free time to volunteer for others. Whether it’s the

promise of doing a colleague’s filing for a week, or wrapping a friend’s Christmas

presents, get your friends and colleagues to bid for your help!

End your year with kindness – donate your final hour’s salary before you clock off

for the holiday.

A reverse advent calendar – this year, why not replace the chocolate with a

donation? Make your own ‘reverse calendar’ and pop in your loose change each day

in the lead up to Christmas. A little can add up to a lot!

Icing on the cake – whether it’s Christmas cake or a chocolate Yule log, everyone

has their own favourite, so why not organise a festive bake sale?

Deck the halls – to get your school or workplace in the festive spirit, why not hold a

decorations competition? Everyone pays a small entry fee to take part; prize to the

best dressed classroom/office!

Christmas bag pack – December sees the country descend on their local

supermarket to do their ‘big shop’. Why not get a group of friends or colleagues

together to help with a bag pack and supermarket collection? Get in touch with your

local supermarket to check availability.

Christmas knits – swap your uniform for your favourite Christmas outfit. Whether

it’s a jumper, onesie, or your Christmas pyjamas, organise a festive dress down day

for Candlelighters.

#GivingTuesday – 29th November will see people around the globe donate to their

favourite charitable causes as part of Giving Tuesday. We would love for you to think

of Candlelighters on this international day of giving.

Candlelighters Christmas Raffle – with some fantastic prizes up for grabs, make

sure you purchase your Candlelighters Christmas Raffle tickets. Even better, why not

sell them in your local community?

In lieu of cards – donate to Candlelighters instead of sending Christmas cards to

colleagues. Just get in touch for a Christmas poster for your office. Ask your company

to get involved and donate instead of sending cards to clients. We can supply our logo

for your business to use.

We’re here to help you put the fun in fundraising and have lots of top tips to make sure

your fundraising efforts are successful. Whether you’ve fundraised for Candlelighters before,

or it’s your first time fundraising, make sure you get in touch with our fundraising team for

support.

We welcome the dedication of all supporters, but it’s important to ensure your fundraising

efforts are safe and legal – make sure you read through our easy to follow Fundraising

Guidelines.

Spread the word

While organising your fundraising, it’s important to shout about what you’re doing for maximum

awareness and impact. The more people that know about your fundraising, the more that will

get involved! Whether it’s creating a Facebook event, getting in touch with your local press or

emailing everyone in the office, make sure you spread the word. Remember, a picture says a

thousand words! If you would like Candlelighters to help promote your event, please send

photographs and all relevant information through to our fundraising team at

[email protected].

Many hands make light work

It’s amazing the different skills the people around you will have. Whether it’s your friends,

family or a local group, why not ask others to get involved with your fundraising? The more

people you have helping, the less work you’ll each have to do.

Ask for donations-in-kind. Whilst your friends and family may not all have money to give, they

may be able to lend support in other ways – whether it’s providing equipment they already

have, baking cakes or lending a hand on the day, a little help can go a long way in keeping

your fundraising costs down. You can also get local businesses involved too, whether it’s by

getting them on board to donate a raffle prize or sponsor your fundraising. It will keep your

costs down and help boost their profile in the area. Ask our fundraisers for an authorisation

letter.

Online giving pages

To help promote your fundraising and collect donations, why not set up a JustGiving page? It

is free and easy to use, secure for online transactions and money donated is sent directly to

Candlelighters, meaning less hassle for you! JustGiving also allows you to tell your story,

letting others know why you have decided to raise funds for Candlelighters this Christmas.

Again, remember to personalise your page by adding photographs and updates!

Permissions and licenses

When planning your fundraising it’s important to make sure you have obtained the necessary

permissions and licenses where required. For further information please see our Fundraising

Guidelines sheet. If in doubt, please just contact our fundraising team for help.
