RangioraEarthquakeExpressManythankstoPaulineWalker,RangioraArtesanBakeryandRangioraNewWorldforthegenerousdonationsofbreadgoodiesandtinnedfoodyourfamiliesreceivedthisweek.Ourschoolisverygratefulfortheirongoingcommunitysupport.ToysatSchoolChildrenarenotpermittedtobringtoystoschoolasunfortuatelytheycauseissuesintheclassroomsandplayground.Pleasesupportusbycheckingyourchild’sschoolbageachday.Teacherswillberemovinganytoysbroughttoschool.Currently ‘FidgetSpinners’are interferingwithclassroomprogrammes.Teachershavetriedtoworkwithstudentssothesewereonlyusedatplaytime.Howeverthesecontinuetobeaproblemsowerequestthesestayathomeplease.StaffingNewsSadlytheBoardhavereceiveda letterofresignationfromKelvinWood,ourSchoolCaretakerwhohasdecidedtomoveontonewemploymentventuresafterservingforfouryearsasourSchoolCaretaker.WewillbeadvertisingthisvacancyforafulltimeSchoolCaretakershortly.MsKateHusbandwasunable to continue in her new role as our SpecialaistArts teacher so currently our class teachers areteachingtheMusic,DanceandDramaprogrammes.
BullyfreeNZWeek-StudentBehaviouratSchool AteachBoardMeetingtwiceatermIamrequiredtoreporttotheBoardofTrusteesonthenumberofofficialstanddownsthatIhavehadtoimposeonstudents.TheBoardandIaresaddenedthat,despiteourbesteffortsthroughPositiveBehaviourforLearning programmes, some of our students can be so anxious, dis-regulated or unable to control their emotions and/orbehaviourthattheyarechoosingnottouseTheir ‘WITS‘or ‘Stop,Think,Do’strategiestaught inclassandberespectfuland
responsibleatalltimestoallchildrenandalladultsatschool.IthenhavenochoicebuttousetheofficialMinistryofeducationprocessofstanddownwiththesechildrentogivethemandtheirparentsaclearmessagethattheirbehaviourisunacceptable.TheBoard,staffandIarebecomingextremelyconcernedaboutthenumberofstudentsthroughouttheschoolfromYear0toYear6whoare,onoccasions,choosingtobeverballyabusivetootherstudentsortostaff;orwhoarechoosingtobephysicallyviolenttootherstudentsandtostaffintheclassroomorintheplaygroundatschool.Iamverysadtoreportthatwehavesomestudentswhoarechoosingtoswearatotherstudentsortostaff,somechildrenwhoarerefusingtocompletetheirworkinclassand do as their teacher asks, and some children who are scratching, biting, kicking, and hitting staff and other students. Ireassure you that these are very isolated cases, however we take each of these incidents extremely seriously indeed. Thisbehaviouriscompletelyunacceptableandisdealtwithimmediatelywithseriousconsequences.WehaveZEROTOLERANCE!WhatisVerbalAbuse?
• Unprovokednamecalling,swearing,loudoffensivelanguageWhatisPhysicalAbuse?
• Unprovokedscratching,biting,shoving,kicking,hitting,punchingWhatisCyberAbuse?
• Texting,emailing,Facebooketc.ItisillegalforchildrenunderthirteenyearsofagetohaveaFacebookpageatall.WhatisBullying?
• Bullyingisdeliberate–intentionallycausingphysicaland/orpsychologicalharmtoanotherperson.• Bullying involvesapower imbalance–anactual(orperceived)unequalrelationshipbetweenthosebeingbulliedand
thosewhobully.Forexampleduetophysicalsize,age,gender,socialstatusordigitalcapabilityandaccess.• Bullying is usually not a one-off – it is repeatedover time,with the threat of further incidents leading to fear and
anxiety.Peoplemaybullyonepersonmanytimes,ordifferentpeopleeachtime.• Bullyingisharmful–thereareshortorlongtermeffects,long-termphysicalorpsychologicalharmtothetarget.
As it is ‘Bully Free New Zealand’ week it is timely to reinforce to all that we are a ‘Zero Tolerance’ to Bullying School. Themajority of the current behaviours from children thatwe are having to dealwith at school,we do not consider bullying, asbullyingisintentionalandrepeatedactsofverbalorphysicalabuseovertime.AlladultsandchildrenintheschoolenvironmenthavetherighttobesafeanditismyresponsibilityonbehalfoftheBoardofTrusteestoensureyourchildrenandourstaffaresafeatschool. Itakethisresponsibilityextremelyseriously.Wehaveat leastfivestaffoutondutyatplaytimeandlunchtimebreaks,includingtwoteachersandweprovide‘CheckandConnect’programmestosupportchildrentolearntomakepositivechoicesintheirplay.SomestudentsareindividuallysupportedbyaTeacherAide. Wearenoticinganincreaseinlatenesstoschoolandgrowingabsences.Our gorgeous Kakano teachers are eager to focus on teaching andlearning but are often disrupted by late learners. School starts at9.00amandourclassroomsareopenfrom8.30am.LNSLearnerscanbeat school from 8.30am onwards and each class teacher in the Kakano
Teamhas learning stations for learners tobe involved ineachmorning. Please canyou and you whānau/family support our wonderful teachers by having yourchild/childrenatschoolreadytolearn.ItwaswonderfultoseeourKakanoLearners‘BeingALearner’andrunningtheCrossCountry for the first time yesterday! We saw lots of life long skills such asperserverance, supporting others, trying our best, trying new things and resiliencebeingdisplayed.WhatproudteacherstheKakanoteacherswere!Itwaswonderfultohavewhānaualongsupportingourtamarikiparticipateinthewiderschoollife.

SeniorDebatingatLinwoodCollegeRecently Michael, Jayda, Brandon and Claudia had the opportunity to attend Linwood College as part of an EnrichmentProgramme. This programmewas to give the students a taster of the skills required for debating. Theymet students fromLinwoodCollegeandother local schools. Theprogramme ranover7weeksand they learned things suchashow topresentinformationtoahugeaudiencewithoutbeingafraid,howtowriteandpresentanargumentandhowtorebutanotherperson'sargument.ThestudentsreallyenjoyedthisopportunityandBrandonsaid,"MyfavouritepartwaswhenIgottodebateinfrontofYear7and8studentsfromLinwoodCollege.IfeltabitnervousbutJaydaandMichaelspokereallywellforourteam."
