Pastoral Letter
Dear friends,
This week we have been celebrating “vocation awareness,” and I thought I might share with you my own vocation story. I have been ordained for 44 years, and was ordained on June 1, 1974, in the Diocese of Cleveland, Ohio. I was a Marist priest for nine years, and have been serving in the Diocese of Orange in California for 35 years.
There have been quite a few changes in those 44 years! Things are radically different in our church and in our country from my own growing-up days in the 1950’s. Probably the biggest difference is in the cultural support that there was for religion and religious vocations back then. Our society promoted the practice of religion, and most people respected those who chose a life of service in the Church and in society.
In the 1961, President Kennedy famously asked us to “ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” And Pope John XXIII, as he called the Second Vatican Council into session in 1962, challenged us to “aggiornamento,” bringing our faith up to date and engaging the modern world. These were exciting days!
Many in my generation answered those calls and became priests, sisters, and brothers. The seminaries and convents were full, and the Church was optimistic about the future. I was encouraged by my family and friends as I chose a life of service in the Church, and am so grateful to God for calling me to this life.
Today, after wars and scandals and the rise of secularism in our culture, that optimism has been shaken. Those who choose a life of religious service can no longer count on the support of families or society at large. It’s more difficult than ever to persevere in a religious vocation.
But God is still calling! And God’s grace is still inspiring men and women to accept that call, and to follow in Christ’s footsteps, however difficult it may be. “The harvest is rich, but the laborers are few.” Pray that many more will accept this challenge today. Maybe God is calling you, or a member of your family, to this life. You won’t regret it! Sincerely, Father Don Romito
