We Say Yes to God through Prayer, Worship, & Service
Our St. Joseph School mission statement is “We Say Yes to God through Prayer, Worship, & Service.” We value and promote service in living out our faith both locally and in our greater community. God calls and empowers us to use our gifts and talents for the benefit of others, especially those who are most in need. Service learning is an important aspect of your child’s education here at St. Joe’s! Each month during the school year, we will engage in a school-wide service project. For the month of October, we are partnering with our parish missions ministry for the Appalachia Christmas Mission Project. Please see p. 3 for details on how you can participate as a family! Each student in grades K-8, is asked to complete individual service projects throughout the school year. The shoebox project is a great example of a way your child can complete this requirement. We will continue to share service project ideas with you each month. Please see the links below for the service project form for your child’s grade level. Once a service project is complete, your child needs to fill out the form and submit it to his or her homeroom teacher. Thank you for your partnership in raising leaders in our community working for the common good! SHOEBOX INSTRUCTIONS For School
St. Joseph Church is participating in the Shoe Box Mission Project, benefiting Fr. Hoppenjans parish and neighboring Kentucky Catholic Parishes. We hope the school children will also participate in this project and earn service hours. How does the pro-gram work? 1. Use an empty shoebox, sturdy cardboard, or plas-tic, photo boxes from craft store also work. If you wish to cover box wrap top and bottom separately so cover can be removed without tearing the paper. 2. Determine if the box will go to a boy or girl and what age would be appropriate for the gift. Ages 1 to 18 years. Pick up the tag to place on top of the box.
3. All items in the box must be NEW. Please no religious items, cash or gift cards, guns or violent toys. 4. Start with a WOW Item. A wow item is one thing that when the person opens the box they look at
that item and say WOW. Example: a soccer ball deflated with a pump and needle enclosed, large stuffed animal, lego set, action figure, Barbie doll, team sport item( cap, shirt) ,bath and body works items for girls, axe items for boys, craft item , watch or jewelry etc.
5. After WOW item is in the box fill in with smaller items if there is room. Socks (always a great need), fingernail polish, small cars, hair items, art items, clothing items, toothbrush and tooth-paste, small wrapped candy item, school supplies, magic tricks, tiny animals etc.
6. Fill out tag check for boy or girl and approximate age and attach to top of box and tie box securely or rubber band together. When filling out tag, try to be specific on size of clothing, and complete contents in box
7. Return to St. Joseph School (Mrs. Mansour’s classroom) by Oct. 27th. Thank you for participating in this project. Please contact Lou Croke at [email protected] with any questions!
Prayer to Say Over Shoe Box
Dear Lord, we thank you for the opportunity to serve you and bless someone with this Christmas Gift, We pray that you would not only help the box to arrive safely, but that it would bless the person who receives it in a very special
way. More than anything may they come to know you and the great love that you have for them! Amen

Each school day, with few exceptions, we need volunteers to help monitor recess on the playground. In this role, volunteers (family members of students K - 8) assist school staff with supervision and help to maintain a safe environment for the
school children to play. Students love it when family members come in and show interest in their school day! Please see the Sign-Up Genius site to volunteer!

ISD #196 Transportation will not be issuing any bus passes for the 2020-2021 school year.
This will allow them to keep the numbers in check when
transporting the regular riders on the bus. Families will have to
make transportation arrangements if their student will
be going home with another student for after school activities.
Please keep in mind that costumes must not be violent in nature and they should
not include fake or toy weapons. Costumes that depict devils, demons, or
which may be offensive to groups of people of cultures are not welcome. Parents should use discretion when
choosing costumes.

Uniform Orders: We should be receiving the uniform and spirit wear orders from Donald’s Uniform Co very soon. Thank you for your patience. Donald’s serves the private schools in the metro area as well as many
schools in the Dakotas, Wisconsin, and Iowa so the beginning of the school year is always a busy time for them and the monogrammers. During the school year, Donald’s requests minimum orders from the school to keep costs
down. Moving forward, we will only be placing orders at the end of every month or when we can reach the minimum. If you are thinking of ordering a spirit wear item for your child (especially for Christmas giving),
please order soon as it can get quite busy over the holidays. Thank you!

Sunday Readings and Backgrounds
Twenty eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time Reading I : Isaiah 25:6-10a The Lord will provide for his people.
• Chapters 24-27 of the Book of Isaiah turn to the end times of God’s great victory, when all enemies would be defeated and God’s people would rejoice.
• A favorite image for the last day was the image of a banquet which God will provide on Zion, the holy mountain.
• All peoples will be invited, except, of course, God’s enemies who have already been defeated. Sin and death are the final enemies.
Reading II : Philippians 4:12-14, 19-20 In Christ, I am strong.
• Paul had just received a gift from the Philippians and wrote to express his gratitude.
• He praised them for their concern, but he also wanted to make clear to them that it was God who sustained him.
• Ultimately, Paul trusted in God’s great banquet at the end of time. Gospel : Matthew 22:1-14 All are invited to the feast.
• Jesus tells the parable of the wedding banquet to describe the Kingdom of God.
• Those invited to God’s Kingdom must respond to the invitation with repentance and good works.
• Because many of the Jews in Jerusalem refused the invitation, the Gentiles were invited to the banquet.
Activities of the Week Choose one of the following activities as a way to further reflect on the Sunday readings:
• Together with your family, discuss the phrase “Many are invited but few are chosen.” This week do one thing as a family to help others, thereby making this world a better place for someone else.
• Plan a dinner party and give thanks to God as a family. Plan the guest list together and get everyone involved in sending out invitations. Talk about what foods to serve and how to decorate. Use a special meal prayer of thanksgiving for the occasion.
• Participate in the Banquet of the Lord by attending Sunday Eucharist together as a family. Talk to the family about preparing our hearts for the Eucharist. What can we do to be better prepared for the liturgy celebration? Arrive at church a few minutes early to prepare for this special Eucharistic meal.
• Check with the parish office to see if there is an elderly person who needs transportation to Sunday Mass. Invite that person to join your family for the liturgy.
