In addition to Cynthiana, Paris, Georgetown and Lexington are very popu-lar shopping and dining destinations, with several other nearby communities also seeing a good number of Democrat and Shopper readers . The map at right shows some of the major shopping destinations for our readers, with approxi-mate distance and travel time from Cynthiana - but a look at the map, (with the shaded area representing the Democrat and/or Shop-per coverage area), shows that many of our readers have even shorter drives to these destinations .

Linebacker James Custard tackles a Covington Catholic running back in last Saturdayʼs game. The
Bredʼs ended their season with a 39-13 loss to the Colonels in the Class AAA Playoffs held at Covington
Catholic.
Five from Harrison qualifyfor state cross country meetBY LEE KENDALL, SPORTS WRITERThree Thorobreds and two Fillies survived a treacherous course at Wildwood Park in Ashland and qualified for this weekend’s state cross country meet at the Kentucky Horse Park.
Matt Thompson, Luke Garnett and Ryan Puckett earned their way to the state meet by finishing in the top 15 among individuals in last Saturday’s AAA regional in Ashland. Rachel Thornberry and Anna Rush were the only
two Harrison County entrants in the girls’ regional, but both finished well enough to join their male teammates in the state meet on Saturday. “This was probably the worst surface that I have seen as a coach,” said HCHS coach
Danny Simpson of the 5,000 meter Wildwood Park course that served as the regional site. “On Friday we walked over the course and the kids couldn’t believe the condition it was in. There were a lot of steep hills and winding trails
Pre-season starts for Fillies tomorrowBY LEE KENDALL, SPORTS WRITERThe Harrison County Fillies lost just one player off last year’s regional runner-up team, but that loss was a big one.
Megan Gray, a mainstay in the Harrison County start-ing line-up for five years, graduated after last season and leaves a big hole to fill for head coach Mac Whitaker and the Fillies of 2004-05. Gray scored over 2,300 points in her career, hauled down over 1,000 rebounds and was a defensive force in the
middle with her shot-block-ing and shot-altering ability. Four starters return for the Fillies, including All State candidate Brooke Faulkner, and the Harrison County roster has no seniors. Joining Faulkner in the start-ing lineup will be LaDonna Turley, Garyn Price and Katie Kendall. Also missing this year will be last year’s sixth man Mary Todd Seaman who chose not to play this year. Faulkner, Price and Kendall are all juniors this year, and Turley is a sopho-
more. Looking to fill the fifth starting spot will be freshman Laura Kendall or sophomore Jaclyn Highlander. “I’m not sure how good we’ll be this year, but I think I can already tell that I am going to like how this team plays,” said Whitaker. “They really give a good effort and get along well with each other. If they can improve their individual skills and develop some toughness, I think we can be pretty good.” Harrison County gets its pre-season underway tomor-
row night as they face off against Pleasure Ridge Park at 9:15 p.m. at Scott County High School in the first of its two pre-season scrimmages. Paris would appear to be the odds-on favorite to repeat as 10th Region champions this year. The Lady Hounds also return four starters, includ-ing stalwarts Natalie Tubbs, Taylor Christman and Iona Caulder. They have been rated as high as 13th in the state in pre-season publications. Mason County and Montgomery County also
return the bulk of their ros-ters this season and will be considered contenders to unseat Paris. Fleming County, Bishop Brossart and Clark County also return veteran teams and will be in the mix come tournament time. Harrison County has eight home games this year, start-ing with its season opener against East Jessamine on Dec. 2. Harrison County’s other home games this season will be on Dec. 16 against Paris, Jan. 8 against Clark County, Jan. 11 ver-
sus Bourbon County, Jan. 28 against Campbell County, Jan. 31 against Nicholas County, Feb. 11 against Simon Kenton and Feb. 25 against Ryle. The Fillies will play in a couple of tournaments over the Christmas break. They will participate in the Prime Time Classic at Lexington Catholic beginning on Dec. 18 and will also play in the Boyd County Holiday Classic, which starts on Dec. 27.
BY LEE KENDALL, SPORTS WRITERThe recent Harrison County tradition of stumbling on the road in the playoffs against Northern Kentucky teams continued on Saturday as the Thorobreds saw their season come to an end with a tough 39-13 loss to home-standing Covington Catholic. A five minute stretch at the end of the first half and beginning of the second half, spelled doom for the Breds. A three-yard TD run by James Custard with 8:11 to go in the second quarter tied the score at 7-7 as Harrison County more than held its own with the powerful Colonels for much of the first half. CovCath answered with a 15-play, 73-yard drive that ended when Eric McHenry plowed into the end zone with 1:24 left in the first half to give the Colonels a 14-7 lead. Harrison County attempt-ed an ill-fated fake reverse on the kick-off following CovCath’s go-ahead score. Harrison County maintained possession, but started play on its own 13 yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, the Breds attempted another reverse, and Lucas Wells was thrown for a nine yard loss back to the Harrison County four yard line. In the shadow of their own goal line, the Breds ran consecutive plays up the middle and CovCath wisely used their time outs to get the ball back following a J.D. Ashbrook punt.
The Colonels took over on the Harrison County 40 yard line and took five plays to eventually score on a nice catch and run by wide receiv-er Kyle Callahan from 22 yards out with just 22 seconds left in the half.
Instead of trailing 14-7 at the intermission, Harrison County found itself behind 21-7, with CovCath set to receive the second half kickoff. The Colonels took advan-tage and marched 67 yards in just under four minutes to extend their lead to 29-7 on an 18-yard run by Nick Buckley. Harrison County refused to fold. The Breds answered with a 68 yard run by QB Cory Britt on the first play after the ensuing kickoff, cut-ting the deficit to 29-13.
Then cornerback J.D. Ashbrook intercepted his sec-ond pass of the game to give the ball back to the Breds. Three plays later, Harrison County had it on the CovCath five yard line, first and goal, with a chance to make it a one-score game. An illegal procedure pen-alty and three failed attempts in the end zone left the Breds with a fourth and goal. Britt attempted a pass to Custard in the back of the end zone, but the ball was deflected and fell harmlessly away. “That was our last really good opportunity to get back in the game,” said Harrison County head coach Ray Graham of the Breds fourth quarter charge. “I really thought we could have won the game, but CovCath made some plays when they needed to and we didn’t.”
Graham pointed to the CovCath passing attack as the difference in the game. “We didn’t really shut down the run, but we han-dled their running game okay,” said Graham. “We just didn’t have enough depth in the secondary to handle their passing attack well enough, though.” For the game, CovCath rushed 44 times for 212 yards. Buckley led the way for the Colonels, picking up 141 yards on 22 carries. Quarterback Drew Ellison was the sec-ond leading rusher for the Colonels. He gained 32 yards on nine carries.
“The yards we gave up per carry wasn’t great but it wasn’t bad either,” said Graham. “They didn’t break any really long runs against us, but they did have some
