We Put The Win In Winter
LADIES FIRST
Hammerin’ Hartford! Hartford Marathon October 10, 2015
The Hartford Marathon has become the showcase race for ‘New England’s Finest’ runners, and that’s not marketing hyperbole; the organizers have a program to draw our best from the region to go head-to-head at Hartford. A few of WCRC’s Finest were on the line on October 10, and a raging battle ensued on the fields of Hartford CT. Our Amanda Deblauw, superb cyclist, runner, and Ironman podium dweller crossed the 26.2 mile mark in 86th overall, stopping the clock in a crushing 3:04:49 (7:03) - and 2nd out of 148 women in the F35-39 age bracket. Unbeknownst to Amanda—or beknownst (wait, beknownst??) - right behind her was our Elizabeth Dollas—an omnipresent podium perch-er and marathon champion—who crossed 89th overall, in a blazing 3:05:29 (7:05) - 3rd out of 148 women in the F35-39 age bracket.
Most interestingly, Beth finished a scant 40 seconds behind Amanda, both women taking spots on the podium. Naturally this editor would be jazzed by such a matchup: imagining they spied each other on course, eyes narrowed, and an epic battle ensued! Reality is likely they both had incredible finishes at the same race on the same day. Either way, their finish times are the envy of all ages, and needs to be trumpeted. Congrats to Amanda and Beth on their clash of the titans! -RR

Great Guns at Great Island!
Great Island 5K—New Castle Island, NH
October 11, 2015
WCRC loves the finer
things in life: views of lighthouses, runs with friends, and building quad
muscles by climbing onto award podiums. Combining all three, you’d
find WCRC at the Great Island 5K this past October. We’ll start with
Kim ‘Possible’ Parker, who took best in the women's master s (F40-
49) area code at a blistering 6:49 pace! Super septuagenarian Lawson
Noyes was on hand to totally dismantle any who dared challenge
him (15 made the attempt) taking 1st in M70-79 at 7:18 pace.
Rounding out our award squad: our Carol Weeks was 2nd in F60-69 at
a speedy 7:44 pace, Lizbeth MacDonald was 3rd in F50-59 at a zippy
7:37 average, and Janet Parkinson was 3rd in F60-69 at a cruisin’ 8:02
pace. All athletes received a sweet fleece hat adorned with their local
Portsmouth Harbor lighthouse logo –this hat has become the go-to head
cover of those runners this winter! -RR

Great Gams at Great Bay!
Great Bay 5K—Stratham NH
October 24, 2015
WCRC appears attracted to events with the word ‘Great’ in it, and for the
2nd time in a month [relative geographically to the seacoast of NH], the
Great Bay 5K provided both a burner of a race and an event with the
word ‘Great’ in it. The GB5K supports the Great Bay Stewards- a group
that protects a tidal estuary of the same name. We had two firsties: Super-
Sarah Knowlton was our top woman and best in age F21-29 at a zippy
6:32 pace. Before his odometer could flip to a new decade- Bobby Strout
was #1 in M50-59. Catherine Raynes went sub-7 pace (6:57) to nab 2nd in
age F40-49. Ella Richardson took 3rd in F50-59 at a cruiser 7:29 average,
and Jacci Hussey was our final podium-folk with a 3rd in age F60-69 at a
fine 9:01 pace. -RR

Harboring Negative Splits!
Harborside Half Marathon—Newburyport, MA
November 15, 2015
Our friends at Loco brought another premier half marathon distance to The
NBPT, this time showcasing the most scenic backroads and byways of
Newburyport and Newbury MA - even stomping through the grounds of
retired Governor’s Academy coach/teacher (and WCRCer) Dave ’Abu’
Abusamara! Of course we were in the hunt for awards, and Bob Strout
celebrated his first win in age M60-69 at 6:58 pace! Jess Ward was 2nd in
age F40-49, and Mackenzie Gray was 3rd in M20-29. 50-Stater (and
USATF course certifier) Bob Kennedy took third in M60-69.

Pipestave Dream!
26th WCRC Wild Turkey Trot Pipestave Hill, West Newbury MA Thursday November 26th 2015
by Dennis Donoghue
You don’t run the Pipestave Turkey Trot so you can brag about your 5K time at the dinner
table. But there’s plenty else to brag about: conquering hills that make you as dizzy a
carnival ride, streaking around--or over --equestrian jumps, accelerating pass your
competition on the few patches of flat terrain, one of those along an idyllic pond, and
stepping over prone bodies after you collect your finisher’s medal and head for the hot
chocolate table.
With 300 strong and a two minute course record by Emily Raymond, who became the
first woman to break twenty minutes, the 26th annual (okay, so the medal said 25th), WCRC
Thanksgiving romp featured a stunning landscape and beautiful weather (50 degrees, no
wind, clear skies). A trail run with attitude, the race attracts those who believe runners ought
to surround themselves with unspoiled beauty even if they have to sacrifice their lungs and
quads to do it.
“I’m always so busy looking around I forget that hill at the end,” said Gail Clark, who would
end up third in her age group (60-69). “Then I get to the bottom and wonder what kind of sadist
designed this course.”
With its grueling uphills, steep downhills, single footpaths, gravel trails and grassy
pathways, the varying terrain provides the feeling of being stuck on some bizarre natural roller
coaster. You don’t know whether to laugh or cry but you’re sure glad you answered the starter’s
pistol.
“I just love this race,” gushed Kristen Beyer-Schulz, four th in her age group (40-49). “I
could go out and run one of those flat sissy races that are everywhere on Thanksgiving but then
I’d have to look myself in the mirror.”
Race director Scott Walsh doubled his weekly mileage covering ground prerace ensuring bib
numbers and long sleeve tee shirts were distributed and his ample number of course marshals
correctly positioned.
“I thought about racing,” he said. “And actually I did race, zigzagging back and forth over the
course to check on everything. People kept screaming at me that I was going the wrong way.
They must have thought I was some kind of nut.”
Walsh went on to laud his volunteers, who came early and stayed late, putting race duties first
despite the pressure of having to prepare Thanksgiving dinner for their families.
“Volunteering comes first, feeding the family second,” Walsh noted. “Everyone in the club
knows that. And so far no one’s starved, at least that I’m aware of.”
Later Walsh would send out a letter personally thanking those volunteers, as well as apologizing
for having suggested that they spend the entire day cutting new, more rigorous trails for next
year’s race.
“Okay, so I went overboard,” he admitted. “As race director I’m always looking for an edge. I
thought it would be fun for all of us to spend Thanksgiving together with a bunch of chainsaws
and brush-cutters.”
“He wasn’t joking,” said volunteer Rick Bayko. “His truck was loaded with equipment right
down to the safety glasses. This is the type of business that could push anybody over the edge.
Just look at Dave McGillivray.”
For Keith LeBlanc, whose enthusiasm over capturing first in his age group (30-39) was such that
he ran the course twice as a cooldown, the idea of hanging around the venue all day wasn’t as far
fetched as it sounded.
“Why would I want to leave after the race I ran?” he asked. “But since it’s already uploaded on
YouTube, I can gather my whole family around my laptop and watch it all day in the comfort of
my living room.”
For everyone involved - be it runner or volunteer - the WCRC’s 26th Annual Turkey Trot
provided plenty of satisfaction. Competitors were able to push themselves beyond their limits
through the efforts of volunteers providing direction, vocal support, and any other assistance
required.
“For me that’s what it’s all about,” acknowledged Anne Walsh, whose finishing kick moved her
up to fifth in her age group (40-49). “It’s a club effort all around. It’s funny how when you see
a lot of these people on the street, you cross to the other side—but for some reason when they all
get together amazing things happen.” -DD

Strides Fulla Pride
Pentucket Pride 5K
November 22, 2015
Pat ‘Fulla’ Fullerton knows about the battle to win races, and Pentucket Pr ide was on the line on
November 22nd. After battling some injuries this year, Fulla still showed up for work: 2nd overall at 5:20
pace! Pat wasn’t the only WCRCer perched on the podium: in a
string of firsts, our Rick Walsh was best in M50-59, Robin
Nightingale was queen of F40-49, The Man of 1000 Nicknames
Rick Bayko was king of M60-69, Kathy Clark was #1 in F60-69,
Katie Freeman was par excellence at F15-19, and Maryann
Macneil was champ at F50-59!
If we can’t take 1st, we’ll gladly take the next few steps: Daryl
Kincaid was 3rd at M50-59, and The Freeman family could rent
out podium time-shares with their total ownership of the F15-19
dept. as Sarah Freeman took third!

Dashing Through the Seaside!
Seaside Santa Dash 5K/10K
Kennebunks, ME
December 12, 2015
WCRC was in the holiday winning spirit at the
Seaside Santa Dash 5K and 10K races, with 4 out of 5 WCRCers taking gold!
Our Amanda DeBlauw has been on an absolute tear in recent months, and
continued her thrash through the New England racing system with outright
women’s victory at the 10K distance! Amanda crossed 2nd overall and was top
woman at a killer 6:15 average pace!
Also in on the action was our Jasmin Lepir who crossed #1 overall and champion at the 5K event - in a manly 5:33 pace! Was he
alone? Nope: Super-Sarah Knowlton was the women’s champion at the 5K distance in a quick 6:26 pace. Janice Faessler
was not to be denied with all the firsts going around, and seized her own title as the champ of F40-49 age group! -RR

Banyas Produces Toys for Joy
Santa’s Toy Trot
Amesbury MA
December 13, 2015
WCRC’s 2014 Volunteer of the Year didn’t stop in
2015—generous with his time and back-muscles,
our Jimmy Banyas returned as director of our annual event that generates
smiles through the Toys for Tots program. Great weather and the holiday
spirit prompted 74 WCRCers to rally in support of Jimmy and assistant RD
Tricia Lavoie in this 3-distance race format, many doing double-duty as
volunteers. A total of 37 WCRCers took home prizes in their age groups—
including 2 overall race champs (Dave Dunham in the 2-miler and Keith
LeBlanc in the 4-miler)! Hot chocolate, a bottomless-prize raffle, and
maple syrup age-group prizes capped a spirited day of racing and the
mission of raising toys for those less fortunate. A huge thank you goes out
to Jimmy and Tricia for their months of preparation for the 21st version—
and we’ll see y’all for the 22nd! -RR Stalker finds WCRC at Santa’s 2 Miler!

Hangover `16: Born to be Mild!
35th Hangover Classic
Salisbury Beach, MA
January 1, 2016
Mild temps greeted throngs of registered athletes to the WCRC’s 35th annual
greeting of the New Year, and it could only mean one thing: a great day for
plunging! With a snowstorm dumping wet heavy Sierra Cement on New England
with days before the race, it was a scramble to clean up before the throngs
arrived. For the 2nd year in a row, the Hangover breached it’s sell-out point, and
new directors Leanne Corning and Josh Thibault added more racers, the high
water mark hitting 1,311. A total of 122 WCRC runners (56 in the 10K, and 66
in the 5K) arrived to ring in the new year—others came as generous volunteers,
assisting with everything on their holiday from traffic control, to laying out
course cones to pizza delivery—all of it in outdoors-in-January conditions! Aid
Station and Supplies Czar Jimmy Banyas put together a perfect pour (of H2O)
and organized his water stop with their dual role of handling the 5K turnaround.
All volunteer efforts landed another superb event; both races smooth as glass and the
post-race party suds from Woodstock Inn Brewery came from bottomless kegs.
But how did we do? 17 WCRCers in the 5K, and 9 in the 10K took home award
pint-glasses for age group victories. Let’s begin with the top 3 in each race! In the 10K
Amanda Deblauw was 2nd overall woman, and Susannah Landreth was 3rd overall
woman in the 5K!
Onto the 5K and our #1’s in age: Kevin St. Laurent (M20-29), Super-Sarah Knowlton
(F20-29), Larry Fowle (M30-39), Madelyn Steeves (F40-49), Tony Ames (M50-59),
Bruce Butterworth (M60-69), Janet Parkinson (F60-69) and Charlie Farrington
(M70-79). Our 2nd Place 5K Peeps: Stephen Viegas (M60-69), Margaritt McNulty
(F60-69), and Robert Randall (M70-79). Our 3rd place 5K gang: Joe Gurczak (M40-49),
Lisa Rohr (F50-59), Megan Duffy (F30-39), Kendra Chevalier (F20-29) and The
Fabulous Sharon Yu (F60-69).
In the 10K, our #1s in age: Beth Dollas (F30-39), Cindy ‘One Woman’ Army (F50-59),
John Elkaliouby (M70-79), Karen Fogg (F40-49), and Ellie Tucker (F60-69).
Our 2nd place 10Kers: John Ryan Brown (M30-39) and Tom Wylie (M70-79).
Our 3rd place 10K podium list consists of one: Kim ‘Possible’ Parker, 3rd in F40-49.
A huge thank you goes out to all volunteers and new RDs for their time spent to make
this event happen!! -RR

Crosby Queen at Baystate Full!
Bay State Marathon
Lowell, MA—October 18, 2015
With eight WCRCers qualifying for Boston
at the Baystate marathon, this formidable
event also showcased some serious talent
that follows our ‘Ladies First’ theme. To
wit: our Alicia Crosby was best WCRCer
crossing in 3:15:30 (7:28 pace) while
BQing at the same time!
Winning one’s age group at Baystate is
tough, as the competition is stiffer than a
woodpecker’s beak - but Alicia came
closest with 6th in F30-39.

Feed The Need Predict Your Time 5K
Stratham, NH—November 14, 2015
Our 2011 Volunteer of the Y ear Lisa Rohr has been a race director for a
number of charitable races, and her latest has creation is of the predict-your-
time sort. At Feed The Need, runners guess how fast they’ll run, remove
their watches/GPS’s, and see no time clock until crossing the finish (Lisa
covers the time facing on approach). After 3 years and truckloads of food
pantry donations, Lisa’s creation continues to do good work, and pass out
turkeys, pies and gallons of cider (in that order) to those who predicted
correctly. Greatness abounds, and not just the director: our Drew Keifaber
was best WCRC predictor: off by 4 seconds! Thank you Lisa! -RR

USATF-NE Cross Country Championships—November 8, 2015 Count on Franklin Park as ground zero for legendary cross country action every fall in the Boston area. WCRC
has been putting together teams for the assault on the club championship for the last few years, and our 2015
squad was the largest so far. There are 2 things you have to remember about racing USATF-NE
cross country races: #1: “prepare to get roughed up by the competition”, and #2: “Bear Cage Hill

The 32nd Annual Mill Cities Relay Invitational
December 6, 2015
by Dennis Donoghue
Every December like a tribal gathering, the nineteen running clubs within shouting distance of the
Merrimack River gather early on a Sunday morning to gauge one another’s fitness afoot and later their
aptitude for alcohol consumption. And every year at the Mill Cities Relay Invitational (27 miles~5
legs~2 states~1 river) the WCRC outruns and out consumes nearly all its competition.
It was no different in 2015 as the club finished second, just nine points behind Gate City Striders and
one point ahead of Somerville Road Runners. For team coordinator Chris
Grange, who devoted countless nights recruiting enough bodies to fill out
his roster, the results were better than expected.
“I scoured every bar and drunk tank in the area,” he said. “I admit I wasn’t above posting bail for a few of these types.
But they paid me back in spades during their legs. Makes you wonder how they got caught in the first place.’’
Competing against a total of 229 teams, the club came away with five division winners (female sub masters, female
masters, women’s veterans, men’s veterans, co-ed ancients). For Spice Girls (female sub masters), the miles from start
(where club legend Rick Bayko dropped the ceremonial brick, narrowly missing his rehabbed ankle) to finish were
strung together into a diamond necklace, providing this quintet a nearly ninety second margin over their nearest chal-
lenger.
“There was never a doubt in our minds,” said anchor Jenn Currier. “We’d been practicing our hand-offs for months. In a
race like this you can pick up a second or two with each exchange if you do it right. Ours were flawless.”
“Heidi (Hatch, team captain) had us practice blindfolded,” added leadoff Abby Cirinna. “I can’t tell you how
many times I slammed into Maria (second leg Vincens) until I got it right. But it paid off big.”
The relay’s longest leg (9.5 miles) is often the most difficult to fill, despite much of it along a footpath just feet from the
majestic Merrimack.
“I absolutely love that leg,” said Queen of Hearts (female masters) Tricia Lavoie. “One time I
found a case for my cell phone, another time a Market Basket circular from the Eagle Tribune.
It’s a gold mine out there.”
Karen Fogg of League of Their Own (female masters) concurred with Lavoie, but for a
different reason.
“Listening to the river is like the white noise machine I have on my nightstand. It’s not quite as
realistic as the ones they sell at Target but it certainly helps the miles go by.”
With conditions ideal for racing (clear, cool, calm), they unfortunately were also ideal for a
morning of Christmas shopping at the various malls and outlets along the course.
Intersections, though monitored for safety, were far from hazard free.
“You always get some nut on the phone who doesn’t see you,” said Vicki Miller, leadoff for
The Untouchables (women’s veterans). “But then there are those who do see you and still aim
for you, like it’s our fault they’ll miss out on that parking spot ten feet from the front of the
store.”
The race’s final leg (4.75 miles) concludes at the Claddagh Pub in Lawrence. For anchor Kevin
Callahan of The Bionic M en (men’s seniors) the sight of the iconic water ing hole, where
most of his teammates had already secured stools, stirred up a range of emotions.
“You take your chances running anchor,” he acknowledged. “Sure I love seeing the finish line
but I always have serious doubts there’ll be a drop left after I cool down and force my way
through the front door. Half of my teammates won’t even remember my name by the time I get
in there.”
As the award ceremony commenced and the various Circle captains accepted bricks on behalf
of their respective teams, WCRC president Dave Carroll bounded onstage to receive the one
designated for the second place club.
“First off I’d like to apologize for any offensive remarks or behavior on the part of the
WCRC,” he said. “Whenever we all gather under one roof I usually hire a police detail to
protect me from my own membership. That said, they deserve a lot of credit for what happened
out there today. Given the backgrounds of many of them, it’s a near miracle they weren’t
hauled away right off the course.”

The Adventures of Kona Steve
When Hamstrings Attack!
Ironman World Championships, Kailua-Kona Hawaii
October 10, 2015
When it comes to Ironman Kona: ‘you can’t always get what you
want, but if you try real hard you just might get on the podium’.
(apologies to the Stones) Our Steve Smith qualified for worlds at
Ironman Lake Placid 2015, giving him an ’opportunity’ to do 2
Ironmans in the same year. Steve took the challenge and journeyed
to the great state of Hawaii to tackle this hot hilly and humid
course. Mr. Smith had a great race (1:16 swim, 6:35 bike and 4:27
run) for 12:30 finish time. After exiting the hotbox Energy Lab
portion of the marathon, he was in 3rd in age (M65-69) - alas, his
hamstrings revolted and Steve suffered until finish, placing 5th in
the world in age, and on-podium! Congrats Mr. Smith! -RR
Robin C: Triple Iron Threat!
USA Ultra Triathlon Triple Anvil
Spotsylvania, VA—October 10, 2015
Our Robin Cucinotta has done lots of Ironman races of late, even a Double Iron-Distance race last
October. After gobbling up the Ironman Lake Placid event in July of 2015, Robin recovered like a
champ, and journeyed down to Lake Anna Park in Spotsylvania Virginia for the USA Ultra ‘Triple
Anvil’ - a triple Ironman-Distance triathlon.
After a swim of 7.2 miles in 4:43:00, a bike of 336 miles in 23:00:50, and finally a run of 78.6 miles
in 25:03:36—for a total time of 53:10:38— (yes, that’s fifty-three hours folks) ...Robin crossed the
finish as the was the 1st woman overall out of 13 deranged individuals and one 2-person team of
kooks.
A huge 53-hour congrats to Mrs. C! ...which also begs the question: how do you top that?!

Circle Original in NBPT Wall of Fame!
Newburyport Wall of Fame
November 10, 2014
Did you know... there’s a spor ts Hall of Fame in Newburypor t maintained by the
NBPT Elks Lodge? This Hall of Fame—actually called the Wall of Fame—honors the
sports talents of Newburyport high and beyond.
The Wall of Fame welcomed one of the Circle’s own in November of 2014, from the
family with a finishing kick: the Kealey’s!
Mike Kealey is one of the or iginal members of the Winners Circle Running Club—
but he wasn’t always a runner.
Kealey graduated from Newburyport High in 1974, and was a three-year varsity player
on both the basketball and the baseball team. He earned Northeastern Conference and
Cape Ann League All-Star honors in basketball, along with a Boston Globe Honorable
Mention in 1972. Mike helped lead the NBPT baseball team to a CAL Championship
his senior year in 1974.
The organizers at the lodge dug to unearth these impressive stats, which earned Mike a
deserved spot on the Wall of Fame.
Congrats Mike! -RR
Mike Kealey (above left) is one of our
original members and a grad of the first
running boom! Mike is the brother of this
speedy guy (above right) Chris Kealey, a
High Street Mile race director for 9 years,
and a former WCRC President!

2016: Out With The Old...
A Rag Editor Swan Song
It's been an honor and privilege to be club scribe, and laud your incredible athletic feats. This
issue caps my own 6-year drive to be inclusive, uniting, and reuniting for our collective of 800+
active or dormant, lifetime-member harriers.
Why is a club newsletter important? It's the dual mark-of-time and trumpet-of-achievement for
members of all stripes. Whether posted online, or printed/mailed on my dime to senior members
with less tech - our newsletter far surpasses the current 'social media only' method many clubs
have retreated to. Newsletters also enable external entities to observe all our good works,
charitable or swift.
This keyboard churned out 16 issues - some a packed girth of 26 pages. Who will pick up the flag and carry on? I lay this
challenge before you.
May your trial of miles never end, and laurel wreaths adorn your victorious heads-
