From the Diocese

Talents Given, Talents Returned. One more Kingdom of Heaven parable today. God gives in

the great hope that these treasures, these talents, these baptismal charisms will bear fruit. God’s

gifts are not for burying or hiding in safety. They are to be risked, to be used for the benefit of both

self and others. When that happens, God says: “Well done. Come share my joy.”

What gifts of God must I unbury and put to use?

How will I serve God this week by serving another?

What action will I do that prompts God to say: “Well done”?

The Annual Collection for the Diocesan Campaign for Justice and Hope (DCJH) will be the

weekend of November 21-22. It will be held in all parish churches in the Diocese of Springfield

in Illinois. This is our opportunity to help our neighbors in our own communities. 100% of the

money collected stays LOCALLY! Approximately 159,000 people live below the poverty line in

our diocese. The collection is one way we can be a good Samaritan to those among us that are

hungry, lack proper shelter, require clothing and/or need assistance finding employment. There is a

DCJH envelope in your November box. If you miss the opportunity to help through your parish

collection, you can still contribute in several ways:

By mail: Catholic Pastoral Center, Pro-Life Activities & Special Ministries, attn. DCJH,

1615 W. Washington St., Springfield, IL, 62702.

Online: with a credit card by going to www.dio.org/dcjh

Respect Life

“How can there be too many children? That is like saying there are too many flowers.” Mother Teresa

Abortion and Putting Our Faith into Action

In a culture and world that is hungry for the Truth, we are often challenged to put our faith into

action. For example, many of our politicians profess their Catholic faith, but try to divorce the

faith which they proclaim from their policies, particularly as this relates to LIFE issues.

However, as Christ's followers and as Catholics, we are called to integrate our faith into all

aspects of our lives. In fact, we are called to make our faith evident in all our actions and

decisions. In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus tells us not to hide our light under a bushel basket,

but let our light shine before others (Mt 5:15-16).

Defense of the unborn---the most vulnerable and defenseless human beings in our society, is

undoubtedly the most important aspect of integrating our faith and actions. After all, LIFE is the

most important gift that God gives us!

The Sacraments with Bishop Robert Barron – Anointing of the Sick

The sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is inherently bound to the mystery of suffering. Though not exclusively meant for the hour of death, it cannot help but remind us of life’s fragility. People sometimes avoid this sacrament, preferring not to be reminded of the hard facts of human mortality. But it is precisely when we experience the limits of the human condition and feel the vulnerability of our flesh that the omnipotent, immortal God draws closest to us. In this sacrament, Christ, the good physician bestows spiritual healing on those who receive it in faith. God in Christ did not distance himself from the harsh reality of suffering and death. But entered into these facts of human existence directly, seeking out those who suffer and offering healing, consolation, and hope. The next session Anointing of the Sick, part of The Sacraments DVD series with Bishop Robert Barron, will be held on Sunday, Nov. 15, 6:30 pm at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall, Virden. In conjunction with the DVD series, we will explore the doctrines of each sacrament as beautifully defined in the Catechism of the Catholic Church. All are welcome to attend!
